Kevin Towers to be released tomorrow
I just received word that Darren Smith is saying the Padres will be announcing tomorrow that Kevin Towers will no longer be the General Manager of the San Diego Padres. This is the end of an era for Padres fans. More as it comes.

Not happening
"Get on board early," Black said, alluding to, what he feels, is a crop of up-and-coming players.

Unless there is a KT sex scandal or something
I’m going to be really mad at the Moorad ownership for this move.
by Dugout Dude on Oct 2, 2009 6:35 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll keep an open mind
I want to hear who this replacement is first. If it ends up being DiPoto, then I’ll be pretty convinced this was the plan from the beginning and will be sort of disapointed.
I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt for now, as they certainly know more about who did what than we would.
Still, KT has a sterling trade track record and his ability to pluck relievers off the scrap heap is remarkable. Hats off to the man, and he will no doubt be able to land on his feet as a GM in the near future. I wish him well.
Also, this is going to lead to a major shakeup in the front office I am sure, as Towers has a lot of people (scouts, etc.) who are his guys. Perhaps Jeff Kingston leaving for SEA suggests this might have been on the back burner for awhile

I feel bad for the replacement....
He’s going to have some pretty high expectations.

Yeah but most of the other FO was still there.
It’s just crazy, and unfair to Towers. If you’re going to cut him loose, give him the chance to land on his feet in a place he’d like to be.

honestly
I think that is really cool that they gave you guys those sweet tickets and everything, and i completely love the blog. I also understand that you guys aren’t expected to tell us the news from the team…but it also means that they expect to have the blogosphere on their side…and cool tickets shouldnt be enough to have that. Their actual decisions will control how we see them…and this is a really bad step.

The Giants just brought Sabean back
and aren’t the Dodgers working on an extension for Colleti as we speak?
I would rather have Towers than either one of those butt plugs. You had better AMAZE us with your pick Moorad…

Win the World Series
Everyone wants to here the words “Our goal is to Win the World Series,” but when Moorad sarts down a road that he believes will lead to winning the World Series, everyone goes nuts. Maybe he should just say the words “Our goal is to win the World Series,” and do nothing.

Change was overdue
There’s plenty of blame to go around for the Padres awful farm system of the past 10+ years—but as the head man in charge for 14 years, Towers must shoulder some of the blame. Time for a GM better at developing talent than assembling a bullpen from other teams’ leftovers and spare parts.

I'd feel a little better about this
if i had SOME idea who’s on their list and who they are looking at
It’s one thing to dump the GM, its another to find someone to replace him
Though as a small note, we went through something similar when Bochy was canned – and that hasn’t turned out too bad

I don't like this
KT is the master of making trades, the waiver wire and apparently the rule 5 draft.
That said, I think his drafts probably could have been better. I know that he was handcuffed several times by ownership regarding money and Boras clients etc. but there hasn’t been a lot coming out of the farm system until lately.
THAT said, the 09 draft was pretty sweet.
Hopefully we get some young genius that uses calculus to predict the best draft pics or something. I get the feeling this is just Moorad being a bit stubborn.
Thanx much KT!

Thank You, Kevin ...
I’m quite surprised and saddened upon hearing the news tonight. XX 1090 Radio had been hinting this to us the last few days. Kevin has been one of the most consistent Managers in Major League Baseball. You can bet the Padres’ recent surge is due to the hard work of Kevin – He will most likely find work pretty quick in the baseball world, Heck, who wouldn’t want someone who is creative and talented in his craft. I wonder what Moorad is going to do, get Randy Smith – Wasn’t he the guy who presided over the 1993 fire sale? Only time will tell. If you’re reading this Kevin, Thank You for your years of service and giving us Padre fans something to celebrate the last dozen years. Peace – Joe G

KT Should Stay
I have mixed emotions about KT. I live in San Diego and feel that I am a good loyal fan, though I cannot afford to go to Petco Park.
I think KT has done an amazing job given what he has been given to work with. I do not think there is a better evaluater of raw talent than KT.
If the Padres are stupid enough to actually pull the trigger and release KT I hope Houston fires Ed Wade and hirs KT. Then I could go back to my roots and be an Astro Fan. I would not desert the Padres but I would sure be disappointed
