Padres searching for Kevin Towers replacement, DePodesta not on list
If you haven't heard, XX1090's Darren Smith has word that the Padres are actively searching for Kevin Towers replacement. While he did not have any news on who the replacement will be, he has been told that it will not be Gaslamp Ball favorite Paul DePodesta.
I've seen three faults in Kevin Towers in his time as GM:
1. He cares too much.
2. He can't stay within a budget (to the delight of Padres fans).
3. He hands out no-trade contracts like an old man handing out a pocket full of Werther's Original Candies at Legoland.
So this is it. KT may be out. DePodesta not on the list. Who will the new GM be?
Yesterday's Kevin Towers' interview on XX1090
[UPDATE]
Moorad will announce that Kevin Towers will no longer be the GM of the Padres at 2pm PST tomorrow in a Padres Press Conference.

I hear there's this one potentially free agent GM
who has a lot of experience as a major league general manager. He has a history of one-sided trades and turning bad teams into good ones. Oh, and he’s a master and finding bullpen arms. Can’t remember his name, though. We should look into him.

Just trying to play devils advocate
Moorad did interview Towers once in the past and passed him over. I wouldn’t be surprised if he brings “his guy” again over Towers.
IMHO, awful move.

Step 1 to poisoning the well...
Throw the body of one of the best GMs down it.
Step 2. Stay in delusional world of your ego that you have a better track record than the guy you are firing. Hire “visionary” yes man as GM.
Step 3. Play the youngsters, but don’t compete.
Step 4. Watch the youngsters age, get expensive trade them away.
Step 5. Continue the “stay the course” crap as playoffs proceed on our TV, not in our park.
Step 6. Many years later, realize, Hmmm, I guess this is harder than I thought. Sorry SD!

On the other hand
If a small market team is going to spend consistent time at the big dance, they need to excell at drafting and devloping talent. While KT has plenty of skills, drafting and devloping talent are not among them. If the goal is winning the world series, maybe they should get a GM with right skill set.
by field39 on Oct 2, 2009 2:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought Fuson was responsible for the bad drafts
and if we are looking for a GM with draft and development skills, do we go with someone from the old school or do we bring in a moneyballer.
I don’t agreee with letting KT go, but maybe Moorad has to test the waters/can’t leave good enough alone…

The reasons that this team were in bad shape
coming into the year were not KT’s fault. I would be really sad if they don’t bring him back. I think this also kinda alienates a lot of the older fans with the new ownership coming in and completely cleaning house. I know things appear to be in bad shape, but people that actually follow the Padres are getting excited for next year…..if it’s not broken don’t fix it.
