Padres Shortstop Shopping
Padres.com: Padres prepared to find shortstop GM Towers says he has interest in veterans Eckstein, Vizquel
"By next week, we would like to get that done," Towers said. "That's probably priority No. 1 now for us, getting shortstop protection. We don't want to end up empty-handed there."
Towers mentioned he is looking at Vizquel and Eckstein.
"There are a couple of other guys, too," Towers said. "We've got three or four options."
Currently, the Padres have Luis Rodriguez -- who filled in admirably for Greene during the final two months of the season after Greene broke his left hand.
So the question is who do you want as starting short stop? I still like Rodriguez but I think I'm the only one.

Still an LRod Fan
But has there been any news about an additional catcher? Seems like it is just Hundley for now. I’d hate to see Colt 45 back on the roster.
Actually KT talks about that at the bottom of the article
Other than shortstop, Towers said he would still like to add a backup catcher — Towers has had talks with veteran Brad Ausmus, who lives in nearby Del Mar — as well as depth in the starting rotation, even after signing Kevin Correia last month.
Yeah
I thought we were signing Ausmus for sure. I heard he was pretty vocal about coming here while he was still with the ’Stros last season.

I like that bit about finding more starting pitching
it’s like the writer is shocked that Kevin Correia doesn’t completely shore up our rotation
Not knowing the others
having Luis vs. Eckstein, Vizquel, or Edgar is what I’m leaning towards.

How many below average middle IF do the padres plan on having on their roster this year?
I dont see them droppind Edgar, L-Rod, Cabrerra or Denker are they really going to take up 3 out of their 5 bench spots with backup middle IF’s?

They can't be serious about Vizquel
can they??
Eckstein
I’d rather see us add Eckstein as SS and let Luis Rodriguez play his natural position 2B. Antonelli looks like he needs another season in Portland.

Do we really need to throw a few million at another veteran who will underperform?
I think San Diego must be getting a reputation for the mid-life crisis center of MLB. Only instead of having a mid-life crisis, veterans have a mid/near-end-of-career period where they’re out of contract and they just join the Padres for one year, maybe two, put in a half assed effort or otherwise have very MEH seasons, collect their millions and then move on.
The Padres can’t put in the effort to really try to win, the Peavy deal has revealed that much at least, so can somebody tell me why we would want to throw several million at a veteran like Vizquel or Eckstein? No more people are going to come to the game because of those two guys, they aren’t game breakers… so what will they do that will be better than letting a few young kids have some MLB time (Rodriguez) ?

Man, this offseason has turned me into a negative nancy
Apologies for the cynical tone. Reading that Hoffman got an offer from the Dodgers really made me madder than I thought, I guess!

I thought your original post was too upbeat.

Actually I'll take Vizquel if he's cheap
I want a solid defender there #1, there’s nothing worse than seeing your SS kick it around.
Other than that, I could dig eckstein, but I am also excited about Everth (?) Cabrera, hopefully he can handle the glove good enough to stick around.
What's Royce Clayton up to?
He’d probably come cheap.
am i the only one that is a little tentative about
a much maligned defensive short stop leaving SD to go to StL?
i feel like we’ve seen this movie before.

You can haz Vizquel
He’s a great, classy guy that still has a good glove, but his hitting is atrocious. As a Giants fan, I will look forward to ABs against him.
