I thought economy was hurting everyone

but I guess it depends on how good your team is too.

The Dodgers will meet or beat their season-ticket sales from last year even if they do not sign Ramirez, chief operating officer Dennis Mannion said.

Season tickets

are a whole lot different than tickets in general. Season tickets are pretty much a direct reflection of your team’s success over the past year. But the statement by the COO should be parsed:

“meet or best season-ticket sales from last year”

It’s pretty common knowledge to those of us who are unfortunate enough to live in the periphery of Los Angeles that season ticket-sales were miserable for the Dodgers last year. In fact, over the past few seasons, they have been running a buy two season-tickets, get two season-tickets free promotion in an effort to draw more fans into the stadium.

Since the Dodgers won the West last year, there are bound to attract some band-wagon fans who are willing to pony-up for season tickets. But boldly proclaiming that they will “meet or beat” sales from last year really isn’t much of an accomplishment given how dismal sales have been for them.

The Dodgers

have been top 3 in attendance the past 5 years. Are season ticket sales really that big of a deal?

by SDPads_1 on Jan 7, 2009 9:52 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As I said

Season-tickets are way different than attendance in general. Season-tickets are the lifeblood of any sports franchise as it gives them a baseline off of which you plan your seasonal budget.

For whatever reason, the Dodgers have a tough time attracting season-ticker holders. I imagine that it’s probably more of an infrastructure issue. It’s easy to hit the occassional game at Chavez Ravine, but having to consistently get off work at 2 to make it to a game on time is probably tough for a lot of people.

My wife’s half-sister’s husband has full season tickets and commutes from Hemet. I have no idea how he pulls that off. That would be like me having full season tickets for the Padres and commuting from Beaumont.

It's not that I'm disagreeing with you but

I just don’t see the Dodgers season ticket numbers as being that big of a deal to them really. They’ve been top 3 in all of baseball for 5 years in a row now and have always drawn well. They know the fans are going to be there so I don’t think they base season ticket sales on their projected budget for payroll. Now on the other hand teams like the Padres season ticket numbers are huge. When Petco opened it was the first time since I believe 1984 that we cracked the top 10 in OVERALL attendance (& in ‘84 we just snuck in at #10). So a #9 and a #7 in ’04 & ’05 and in ’06 we dropped out of the top 10 yet again. We didn’t even crack the top 10 during the ‘96 or ’98 seasons. So they definitely depend on season ticket sales to gauge fan interest on the upcoming season. If fans don’t show up in San Diego then the team takes a hit.

The only thing I can add is

If you have a higher season ticket holder base, you have more money up front. I’m not an economist, but getting money sooner rather than later is usually a good thing. It also gives you a little more comfort when you’re dishing out signing bonus or increasing the payroll.

Yub yub

That was my entire point. Season-tickets are huge. It’s just funny for the Dodgers to be spinning their season-ticket base like it’s some huge accomplishment.

Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti declined to comment. Rick Thurman, the agent for Hoffman, did not return two messages from The Times.

Ohhhh now Thurman decides to not talk to the media!!!!

Go ahead Trevor

Prove to us it’s all about the money.

Unfortunately I don’t think this is about the money

I think this is more about Trevor pissing on the franchise that he thinks wronged him.

Wronged him

by not offering him enough money. I know.

who knows why he thinks the Padres wronged him? I dont rember him being pissed about the moeny they offered.

It was more about that Moores would not meet with him because he was worried about what direction the team was headed adn teh fact that they pulled the offer without warning.

uh what...

i just threw up in my mouth. trevor signing with the dodgers would be wrong on all different kinds of levels of wrong. and that is a lot of wrongs.

I don't think its even good for him

If he struggles there, the Dodgers have no loyalty to him and could unceremoniously dump him as their closer.

would you take him back?

He might, but do you think the Padres will take him back?
