Because our minor league system continues to mature, we have less of a need for the veteran AAA player who provides insurance at the Major League level - we are quite comfortable with the idea of many of our young kids filling those roles. Therefore, we have been able to focus on players we believe have a chance to compete for a job on the Major League team.

I saw him pitch against us (our split squad actually) in Tucson two years ago

I was excited because they had a nice writeup on him in either Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America.

We crushed him. Big time. He also had trouble throwing strikes. Couldn’t finish the inning.

But it was Spring Training, I gave him a pass.

I dont think the Padres are going to compete for the division next year

So they might as well play young guys who may be able to make it as an every day player(Venable, Antonalli, Denker) than sign a bunch of AAAA guys who we know are not every day players (Fick, P-Mac (in the OF), ect…).
