Moorad wants to win a World Series, that's something I can get behind
It's hard not to be happy with new ownership coming in the next couple of months for the Padres. I hope this means the beginning of some good years of baseball coming our way. Hopefully Moorad will bring us some exciting baseball, pennant races, playoff wins and then if we're lucky we can get a new ballpark before he skips town.
I'm just happy that Moorad is setting a goal of winning a World Series rather than just playing meaningful games in September.
Moorad said his Padres ownership group would be “similarly committed to winning,” and cited a World Series championship as a goal “the Padres organization and its fans so richly deserve.”
I guess we'll wait and see what this change means for 2009 but anything is better than what has been happening recently.
Nobody flirt with this dude, he's off limits, let's try and keep this guy married for a few years.

What I would like in 2009
- Declare Peavy off limits, keep him as our ACE
- Bring Back Hoffman let him finish his days here in San Diego closing games
- Sign one descent free agent, Prefibly a capable starting pitcher
This may be a bit much to ask, but that would give a lot more hope for this season.
And a World Series should always be a goal, I do hope they let Alderson & Co. continue with thier plan.

I can see the first two ..
the third one won’t happen this season. Moorad won’t get in in time ..

A “descent” free agent? That sounds probable.

if we are to believe
the $40 million cap on this team, resigning Hoffman at or around $4 million, puts the Padres pretty damn close to $40 million. I think the price is worth it personally, but I can understand others who would rather put that $4 million into a league average starter.

Just to clarify I was making (an admittedly lame) joke. Descent =Decline. I’m sure we could get a free agent who is in decline. haha :-)

I heard that after the 2005 and 2006 division championships
…Sandy Alderson actively rooted against the Padres.

Reading Moorads comments.
It sounds like he is content to be a minority owner for the time being, and will take majority control in a few seasons. If true, I don’t see how any of this helps the padres in the near future.
Maybe I am reading his comments incorrectly, but that is how i understood everything.

It may not help in the near future
except that we know who’s going to be the owner in the coming years instead of being in limbo.

As a mid-level revenue team, I don’t expect that we will ever be a significant player in free agency. .. player acquisitions are likely to be via trades or player development. So that we will invest heavily in those areas, and certainly be open to trading for players who have perhaps significant contracts, as was the case with Randy Johnson, for example. But we are unlikely to be significant players in free agency.

It will help because it will bring some kind of a financhial backing to the club (ie if no one comes to the games)
Moores does not foot all of the bill on his own therefore they may increase payroll a bit.

Cash Flow
I think he can help with the cash flow issue through the divorce and allow the Padres some flexibility. I don’t think he is going to underwrite the team. But the can infuse cash in exchange for X percentage of the team.

I know the sale will prob take place a little too late to do this but it would be nice to:
Sign Perez (he is not goping to get a huge contract at this point)
Trade for Nady (NY is rumored to be shopping him)
Trade Kouz or Headley for another SP
I know those moves would prob not get the team over the hump in 09 but it would set them up for a good 2010 season.
