I too
Like this better than Ausmus. Plus, the Padres need to get some Latino-cred. Who is the last non-Mexican latino free agent that the Padres signed?
1-10-DEN 18 (9:52) (Shotgun) 6-J.Cutler pass short right intended for 19-E.Royal INTERCEPTED by 93-L.Castillo (95-S.Phillips) at DEN 18. 93-L.Castillo to DEN 14 for 4 yards (62-C.Wiegmann). 6-J.Cutler pouts ob to DEN 25 for 11 yards.
Looking back
It looks like we get about one non-Mexican Latino a year, from Luis Rodriguez to Jose Cruz to Manny Alexander to Miguel Olivo to Pedro Astacio. Anyway, my point is that the team doesn’t have a very distinguished track record.

Ah
I foolishly just looked @ his stats from last year (limited), his lifetime stats are not anything to call home about…
not many catchers
have stats to call home about. I notice this after listening to Alderson talk about Hundley and how he rates to the MLB average for catchers….no believing what he said, went over to Baseball prospectus…and sure enough catchers in the MLB are way below other positions on how much they contribute offensively…

Does Towers have an ex-cub catcher fetish?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Oh Henry!
I like this move. We have two catchers who can throw people out now, that’s something. Last year we started with two who couldn’t – for about $5 million between them I think -but could supposedly hit, and didn’t.
I wish this team would do ONE positive thing that elicited some measure of excitement from us.
Just one.

Good luck with that

I gotta say that in an off season of botched moves, this one actually makes sense. The pads are not paying a ton for a veteran catcher who can mentor a talented Nick Hundley. This signing seems to suggest that they feel confidant in Nick’s talent and the investment in an older back up is as much an investment in Nick’s future as a roster back up. They could have just got Carlin. Good for Hundley. He is young and has good defensive skills, and can swing the bat, I think he may be the most all around talented backstop we have seen since Benito Santiago. This seems out of the blue but this signing and the Heath Bell deal make the most sense out of this messed up offseason.

I don't understand the Heath Bell comment
What other choice did they have? Release him? Sign him to a multi-year deal?
