Omar Vizquel could be a Padre by Wednesday
John Weisbarth on his Channel 4 Blog comes through with today's big rumor
I'm hearing today that Omar Vizquel (owner of 11 gold-gloves) could be the Friars shortstop as soon as tomorrow.
Speaking of rumors, guess which shortstop that may be coming to the Padres on Wednesday is very friendly with fans.

Hurt
Doesn’t this guy get hurt a lot. I don’t get how hard it is to play SS.

I bet he doesn't punch a storage locker this year....
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

SS of the future!
The way this is working out, we’re going to have the most well known yet ineffective team ever.

It's like an expansion team
that tries to bring in names instead of talent.
The ’62-64 Mets had Ashburn, Hodges, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, Yogi etc.
The problem was that they were all 42 years old.

This is awesome news!
Between Vizquel and Counsell up the middle, I have a feeling this team’s on the right track for the future. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get off the internet, my mom needs to use the phone! 1999’s going to be an awesome year to be a Padres fan. Welp, later!

Boring.
Omar Vizquel. Hooray.
I’m bored by this. Completely, utterly, totally bored.
I want an infield of Adrian, Antonelli, Some Young Shortstop Prospect With Actual Potential, and Headley at third. Kouz should be spun for a young outfielder/shortstop prospect. Gerut and Giles are fine in the outfield with Hairston there to platoon or as a 4th/pinch hitter.
Trade Peavy for young pitching/filling long term holes at key positions—if the Padres aren’t really going to compete for 2-3 years, then it really just doesn’t make sense to have Peavy 1) making half the total payroll; 2) wasting the prime years of his career. Don’t get me wrong—Jake is probably my favorite Padre, it would kill me to see him leave. But what’s the alternative?
At the VERY LEAST I could be watching a whole bunch of young guys lose with the idea that they MIGHT be headed somewhere better—the way the Twins, A’s or Rays (the best case scenario) do.
I don’t want to watch a bunch of decrepit stop-gaps sucking for very little money so that next year we can replace them with more decrepit worthless stopgaps.
God. I’m in sort of a bad mood today….Thanks, as usual, San Diego sports!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the main prblem with this...
I’d be willing to watch the Padres lose if they have Cabrera at SS and Antonelli at 2B…
But there is no way ill tune in every night to see Chris Burke and Omar Vizquel… is it me or is it starting to feel like the 99-03 padres?

I very much doubt
that these will be “every night” solutions.
KT is just rummaging through the junkyard to fill out his warm body quota for the roster.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

I dont know...
I’m not sure how many options they will have due to lack of bench space…I’m sure they will go with 12 pitchers again so that leaves 5 bench sports:
Backup Catcher
Hairston
Venable
Rodriguez
Cabrera (they have to keep him on the 25 man roster or the lose him)
Back up C
that does not even leave enough room for E-Gon or Denker (who they will also prob lose on waivers if they cut him from the 25 man roster).

If this were 8-10 years ago
this would be an 85 win team.
Giles, Vizquel, Prior, Counsell,

Meaning the solution, obviously, is a Delorean.

This move is so backwards
I don’t even know how to comment on it.

what happened to
“getting younger?”
the friars have enough hand me downs set to battle it out for the three middle infield spots, why not just go with that, and check it again in May?

Getting younger
while adding enough BS FAs to vaguely suggest you’re trying to win

I'm not this is a "suggest you’re trying to win" move
It’s more of a “get somebody who won’t be an embarrassment at SS so that we can look like we belong in major leagues” sort of move.
