Sources: Craig Counsell being pursued by the Padres
Secret Source tells us that the Padres have made offers to Craig Counsell and are interested in having him start at second base.
We probably remember Counsell best from his D-Backs days and most recently, he's been with the Brewers organization.
I for one would welcome Counsell with open arms flailing wildly and sporadically above my head..
[UPDATE] Thinking about it a bit more.... This could very easily be a situation where the Padres are looking to bring somebody in to really compete Matt Antonelli into finally taking the second base spot and leaving the option open for Counsell to actually play shortstop for us. If it works out that the younger guys take the middle infield, Counsell could provide a nice veteran utility bat off the bench.

Cannot Watch
I cannot watch that freak of a contortionist when he is at bat. I hope the Padres do not sign him. I hope they sign someone that flaps his arm like Joe Morgan. Second basemen should flap their top-hand arm when they bat.

What the hell happened to Antonelli?

[Update]
They used to call him “the glue.” Go clubhouse/bench acquisition!
I don’t like “the glue” as a nickname. If you want to secure a wobbly bench, wouldn’t you put a sugar packet under it instead of using glue?

"No sir I don't like it"
Miss that show…anyway at the very least he could be a bat off the bench and we would only be exposed to his medieval torture batting stance a few times a week.

agreed
it never hurts to have a backup plan.
if Antonelli doesn’t improve, i’m fine with Craig keeping 2B warm till Sogard or Figueroa can fill in. It does make sense to put some “pressure” on Antonelli, i think.
mission accomplished.

Ugh, seriously? The man hasn't hit above .260 since 2002.

He means, “the typical Padres starter”.

Another reason he's a compliment to Antonelli
Counsell is left handed hitter.
Antonelli is a right handed hitter.
You could ease in Matty by using a L/R platoon. That’s not something you could do with EGon. You could’ve done it with LRod, but he seems to be our incumbent SS for the time being.
I’d rather have Antonelli, if you’re going to rebuild, go all out. The upside on Counsell is non-existent and a 99 loss team desperately needs upside.
But, overall, my feeling on this is: “Meh.”

Bobby Tolin
had a batting stance like that.

If this happens
it’s not about easing Antonelli into the lineup – more about lack of confidence in Antonelli.
And who are these mysterious “SOURCES”?

My Secret Sources are secret
I will not reveal them that easily, Billy Almon, you sneaky devil.

No Way
Their initial stances in the box may have been somewhat similar (bat held high), but Tolin did not continue to try to reach higher and higher while wiggling his bat like a freak during each bat. Tolin lacked the higher and higher reaching and wriggling. That’s why he was not a freak.

that they were EXACTLY IDENTICAL.

Wasn't Rodriguez going to play 2B?
Or has that idea gone away and is Luis going to be a SS? Or what the heck is going on???

Any plan involving Luis Rodriguez has an asterisk
And the fine print below says:
“*Subject to change”

Why would we pursue Counsell
while Alex Cora is still out there?

the padres don’t have that much laying around.

No amount is to high
when it comes to Coras.
That’s what pisses me off about this front office. I could deal with the Hoffman debacle, the exodus of Khalil, and all of the Peavy talks but the fact that I never saw them mentioned once this offseason in regards to getting involved in the Cora sweepstakes is outright disgusting. Absolutely reprehensible.

at his age, he probably wants a winning team
that’s my guess. it probably would’ve cost even more to get him to come out to SD.

His age?!?!
Need I remind you that Coras do not age as us mere mortals do. Alex has a good 20, 25 years of playing time left in him. He’s like 16 in human years. Also, in lieu of buying air fresheners, teammates pay him to poop in their cars.
