Another downtwo to go.

I didn't think black was a very reflective color.

Are you people stupid? What part of Monday don't you people understand?

Optimist Island: 100 losses are still within our grasp and this season's almost over.

Pessimist Peninsula: The NL playoff picture, this season's almost over.

Strasburg News: Yeah, I know, we're out of it, but he hasn't left our hearts. The Ross Report has this video.

Mr. No Hit Tease takes the bump for the Friar against Bartholemew Jones or something like that, who drags a 15-something ERA to the mound.

Twice in 2006, Young flirted with a no-hitter against Pittsburgh.

Three starts ago, Young worked the longest perfect game in Padres history, going 7 2/3 innings in Milwaukee before Gabe Kapler homered.

Also, notable Bucs vs. CY, lifetime:

Ryan Doumit: .000 (0-for-8, 2 SO)

Adam LaRoche: .083 (1-for-12, HR, BB, 4 SO)

Freddy Sanchez: .000 (0-for-11, 2 SO)

They put up a graphic on the telecast last night that said the Pirates went from a .492/1 win pct. when they had Nady or Bay, to something like .291 since August 1. Ouch, to say the least.

Last night game of the season, first pitch is 7:05PM PT. No hitter or no winner!

Why is 100 losses a good thing?

I’m probably going to get banned on Monday for stubbornly rooting for my team, but I just don’t get it.

The Champions of Suck!

Something you can recount to your children and grandchildren.

“Now you kids might not remember this, but the Padres were caught in a vortex of suck in 2008. No matter what they tried, they couldn’t escape and inevitably they ended up losing 100 games.”

“You’re full of it grandpa. I’m gonna look it up with my mobile broadband connection right now.”
(2 seconds pass) " Wow, you’re right. They did lose 100 games. I didn’t know it was possible to suck that bad."

“Yep, it’s true. It’s not easy to suck that bad, but the Padres proved it could be done waaayyyy back in 2008. 100 losses, a season we’ll never forget… and hopefully never repeat.”

more like

“the San Jose Padres? why would you ever watch those guys grandpa?”

“well, Khalil, once upon a time the Padres played here in San Diego, but our owner lost the team in a divorce and his wife moved up to the bay. took the team with her. bad bad times to be had by all.”

The one good thing about 100 losses

It pretty much means rock bottom. At 100 losses there’s really no defending the idea that things can stay the same next season. Something has to change. Even teams that are racked with injury avoid 100 losses because of savvy moves during the season and depth.

If you want improvement next season, you’re guaranteed to get it if you hit rock bottom, and that’s basically what 100 losses is.
