Open Thread, 9/25: Padres vs Dodgers

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers, Sep 25, 2008 7:10 PM PDT

I can't wait for Monday. On Monday, it's a whole new chapter. Today, we play and hope that nobody gets hurt.

I've been light on the blogging because it doesn't really bring me joy to write about bad play when there's no hope for improvement. Why dream of a big signing when it's not gonna happen? There's nothing to trade. No indication that the team is going to improve in the off season.

It would also be one thing if we didn't see it coming, but we saw it coming pretty early. You don't just sit on your hands and expect a .363 winning percentage to magically change.

And to top it off, the baseball is so boring. Sure, I can appreciate a 1-0 pitchers duel with every other baseball fan, but I'll sure as hell enjoy a 10-9 slugfest a lot more. Or better yet, let's be winning games 7-1 or 11-2. Wouldn't that be fun? Let's make that the goal.

GO PADRES! BE INTERESTING!

Wasted electrons on ESPN.com
2. Giles and Gonzalez have hit Maddux mistakes
Over the past two years, Greg Maddux is 3-0 over the final week of the regular season — a string he will try to keep alive on Thursday when he faces his former team, San Diego, for the third time this month. Los Angeles acquired Maddux in August, and he has won only one of his six starts in Dodger blue. He has pitched better against the Padres (4.63 ERA) than other teams (6.26 ERA).

Maddux has made Padres hitters swing and miss more often, and finished them off on two-strike counts:

Maddux with the Dodgers, by opponent
Stat Padres Other teams
Miss pct. of swings 20.5 8.6
On-base pct. with two strikes .095 .207

The last time Maddux faced the Padres, on Sept. 8, he took 11 of the 25 batters he faced to two-strike counts and did not allow any to reach base. He has also gotten help from San Diego hitters. The Padres rank near the bottom of the league this month in both categories shown in the table above.

The Padres’ two best hitters have always given Maddux trouble. Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez own career 1.034 and 1.021 OPS, respectively, against the future Hall of Famer. They are a combined 8-for-24 against Maddux since 2006.

Giles and Gonzalez both had extra-base hits off Maddux in the last game. He made one bad pitch to Giles, a fastball right down the middle, which went for a double. Gonzalez drove him in with a home run on a down-and-away changeup that caught too much of the plate. It was the only Maddux changeup a left-handed batter has hit out of the park in the past two seasons.

Homer: Ohhhh, The Denver Broncos.
Marge: Whats wrong with the Denver Broncos?
Homer: Marge you just don't understand football.

My hate of Ichiro is shared by his teammates.

Things got so bad in the Seattle Mariners clubhouse during this discouraging season that one player reportedly threatened to “knock out” outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, the team’s highest profile player.

Suzuki

A “clubhouse insider” quoted in Thursday’s edition of The Seattle Times said, “I just can’t believe the number of guys who really dislike him. It got to a point early on when I thought they were going to get together and go after him.”

The story went on to say that coaches and then-manager John McLaren, who was fired June 19, intervened when one player was overheard talking about wanting to “knock him out.” rumors persist that some players believe he is selfish and more interested in his hit totals than the team’s success.

Well

He talks S about other teams and ballparks. And he keeps his bats in a throne room. “Two humidors, actually. He has a large metal case that holds 10 bats and is kept inside a locked room in the Mariners clubhouse and he has a smaller carrying case for road trips. Seriously. Both contain a chemical rod that keep the bats from losing or gaining moisture. He also has his bats shrink-wrapped for delivery to protect them from the elements. During games, Ichiro keeps his bat leaning upright at a special spot on the dugout bench and personally brings all his bats to his locker after games. He is so meticulous, when he returns to the dugout after an at-bat, he always wipes the dirt and grass stains off the bat.”
