Print- I'm concerned that the 2004-2007 seasons are being touted as the model for Padres success. I hated each and every one of those seasons. I go back and read our thoughts from each September and it's like reading a diary of torture. Each team gave new meaning to the word "frustrating". I think there is something wrong with the Padres goals when all they want is for a team to play important games in September.
- There was nothing satisfying about the division titles in 2005 and 2006. I'll take a 1996 divisional race over the 2005-2006 clubs any day of the week, even though each of those seasons ended with the Padres being booted from the playoffs in the first series.
- Dex is working on an Enjoyment Index, so we can figure out what factors make a season enjoyable.
- Do we really need coaches and managers if players possess Sandy Alderson's all knowing Padres Organizational Philosophy Manual?
- If Moores was present this season instead of dealing with his divorce I'd like to be a fly on the wall during Alderson's review. I don't think Moores would dress him down or anything, I'd just like to see what is said. "So this is the team you guys thought was going to win 90 games?"
- I can't believe we are rebuilding again.

Coaches and managers take part in creating The Manual.
This is the year the duct tape/bailing wire failed, about a year before the organization was ready. The whole plan was to rebuild while keeping a successful team on the field, and that was working.

Gotta be Sandy
Honestly, I think there is a lot more wrong with the organization than Sandy. For starters, I’d pick Buddy as the guy with the most day to day negative impact. I also firmly believe that Sandy is doing a lot of good things for the organization (see Dominican facility). However, I am also a firm believer in the “buck stops here” philosophy. And seeing as this is Sandy’s ship, I believe he is ultimately responsible for the failure of the team. My blame in a nutshell.
The thing is
All Sandy has to do is keep his mouth shut. Nobody wants to be talked down to (Marine style). Find the right people to carry out your philosophy and let them do all the work. If the people you hire are able to adhere to organizational philosophies while at the same time creating a unified, motivated team atmosphere then Sandy will have accomplished his job.
The problem is that Sandy can’t keep his mouth shut and hasn’t been able to bring on the staff that he needs to accomplish the goals of this organization.
I like the fact that Sandy answers questions every week
I think it is absolutely great. Whether he or his message is popular is another question.
Yeah, from the standpoint of the company president
taking the time to speak with his customers, that could be a positive.
Whether he needs a prescription for Zoloft is another question.

Sandy annoys the hell out of me because he makes it seem like whenever something goes wrong its everyone’s fault but his own, but then again he took over a team with no farm system and an incredibly limited budget and turned it from a 100 loss team to an 84-88 win team overnight so maybe it’s not really his fault. Will his system/philosophy work? I think its to early to tell…his system is to build through the draft and they are still a year or two away to see if they have really done that or if its all just BS. The Padres farm system has definitely improved but then the average age of most of their minor league teams is a year or two older than their opponents.
Alderson
He took a 64-98 team and made them into a 87-75 team, but let’s not forget that he took a 89-74 team and turned them into a 61-97 team. So if he’s gonna take the credit he has to take the blame as well.
I agree that the farm system is in much better shape, but then again I’ve never paid any attention to the farm system so I’m just taking his word for it.

I voted for KT, though I’m not entirely certain who makes the decisions to bring in players.
Losing Cameron/Bradley and without bringing in suitable replacements, I feel, was a more acute problem than Khalil and our catchers forgetting how to hit.
i am kind of surprised at the anti Alderson sentiment around here.
I voted Towers too, because of the sludge he routinely puts out there on the field.
If i had to rank em, it would be KT, Buddy Black, and then the players. I just don’t see how it is the team presidents fault for this years travesty . i just can’t connect those dots.

For me
It is because Towers serves at Alderson’s discretion. If Towers is not doing his job, I don’t look to Towers to resign or fire himself. Obviously he thinks he is doing a good job. So then the next step is to look at Alderson’s actions in dealing with the issue. So far, there have been none. I have to ultimately blame Alderson. He is the chief executive of the organization. He has the ultimate responsibility. That being said, as I mentioned earlier, I think there are others who have a more negative impact on the team.

Because he didn’t fire the guy that has been the most responsible for 4 of the 5 Padres playoff appearances?
Alderson’s best course of action for dealing with the inadequacies of KT is to hire smart guys to implement a player development strategy that will build a strong base of talent for the franchise to build on. Oh wait, he did do that. He brought in Grady Fuson and Paul Depodesta to do that and the Padres minor league system has dramatically improved in the time Sandy has been here.

The idea that Sandy has anything to do with this team’s suckitude to me is beyond fathomable. He’s not the GM, so he doesn’t pick the players. He’s not the manager, so he doesn’t choose who starts. He’s not a player, so he doesn’t hit, field or pitch. He decides which people are put in which positions. He is developing a long term philosophy on how to make the organization successful, one which is barely implemented. I think people are just blaming him because they don’t like how he portrays himself on Too Much Show. The man is only voice of reason trying to save the Padres and people think he’s sinking the ship.

Hated each and every season? Shoot, I thought GLB was the “it’s all good, let’s go smoke a bowl” kinda Padres blog. It’s just baseball, right? The only thing that washes away the seasonlong accumulation of big and little frustrations is a World Series championship, and only one team gets one of those (for those who may have forgotten); OK, an appearance works for many teams.
I wonder if the “Sandy talks down to” thing – intentionally or not – is just another kind of anti-intellectual swipe. I mean, dude is smart and has to talk to Philly Billy each and every week. Yeah, he can talk like a lawyer or use too many words (and big clinical ones) to say something, giving the impression he’s trying to obfuscate. But he can also be very candid and precise. His constructive criticism of KG and Kouz has been great material and spot-on, too. I find him and his spots fascinating, which is more than I can say for about 98% of player interviews; I don’t think I missed one Sandy chat during his first season here.
I do find it a little distressing that we are still waiting for a roster bursting with Sandy-type players.
I don’t really relate to the “Sandy the blamer” idea, but he invited Smith and Werndl the chance to hammer him about the hitting coach carousel and they didn’t do it.

but those seasons drove me nuts and I’m no the type that gets worked up about baseball. Watching teams that had talent, but could never quite reach their potential as they crapped their pants when they should have clinched didn’t make for fun baseball.
I agree about his great criticism of KT and Kouz, but Alderson deserves some criticism too. It’s his organization that has communication problems between it’s Major and Minor leagues. It’s his organization that players and coaches blaming the FO for the season. It’s his organization that is having a horrific year.
He also deserves credit for giving the team leadership, a philosophy and a farm system.
I really enjoy hearing what Alderson has to say.

That's a good point
I don’t know for sure, but I’m pretty sure the Padres FO is one of the most transparent FO in all of baseball. Alderson and KT have weekly interviews on the radio to let everybody know what is going on. Depo’s blog is the only thing in baseball like it.

I'm sick of people trying to blame alderson and the Fo
Are they not the ones who opened up the biggiest baseball facility in the DC? Are they not the ones who were able to pick up some of the best young talent in the Dominican? Are they not the ones who have been able recently to draft the best player instead of the best value? Are they not the ones who just finished an incredible draft that has already produced league MVPs??

This season ultimately comes down to the players, coaches, and luck.
The team is very very similar to last year’s 89 win team and arguably better at some positions.
Players: We didn’t expect Bard to get hurt and suck. We didn’t expect Iguchi to suck, if fact that was one position that could be considered an upgrade. We didn’t know what to expect from Edmonds but obviously we didn’t expect what happened. As for the rest of them, save a few, they obviously didn’t have any sense of urgency or a great attitude. Who does that come from??
THE COACHING- Bud Black has been the manager. A manager is the leader of the players and in a sense, the manager’s attitude toward the game rubs off on the players. Let’s face it, Bud Black isn’t a manager and he’s going to get fired on Monday (or wednesday) because of it. If Wally doesn’t want to follow the master plan, eff him. You can’t live in a master plan housing devleopment with a RV. They said the main person who Wally was in contention with was Grady Fuson, which doesn’t make much sense to me but whatever, players weren’t hitting anyway. I guess Wally doesn’t like scouting good hitters.
LUCK- There is no such thing as luck but a lot of players on the team this year didn’t perform up to thier career standards. Iguchi, Greene, Bard, Edmonds, the entire bullpen, etc etc etc… This isn’t a big change from last year’s 89 win team, its just how it played out.

I think the biggest mistake
was thinking that last years team was good and if we just filled in for a few players we’d be just about the same team with the same record.
But if you believe the farm system provides the best future for the team
Then the only thing you can do is fill in some cheap-to-acquire short-term players. Otherwise you risk blocking or losing your future good players.

b/c I couldn’t vote for “sins of the past” that killed our farm system, and the fact that there has been almost ZERO good free agents in the last 3 years in all of MLB. You can sign a few pieces to help round out a contender, but unless you have a deep farm system that you can use as a foundation or use to trade for a foundation you are screwed. For 6 years we have had the worst ranked farm system and now we are seeing the results of it.
What big FA signing would have helped if you go back 3 years?

Maybe when SA said (to the effect), “Yeah, I worry about communication between our minor league and major league systems,” he meant in a general sense – at least to a degree. I mean, who he is talking about? Fuson and the big club’s coaching staff? What kinds of communication breakdowns (cue Zep) are we talking about? I’m sure some people listened and thought, “Dude, get your people together for breakfast or fishing or something, already.”

Why does the majority of baseball all concur on that, and collectively kiss his ass? He’s got the strike zone the size of an index card, and squeezes the hell discriminantly out of rookies. And when the game goes into extras, you better believe that you’ll begin to see a lot of 3-3 counts, and a whole lot of ambiguous safe calls . . .
