Smells Like Padres in Here - Tuesday Edition
Greg Maddux gets some run support and ties Assface on the all-time wins list. Unfortunately, Maddux is now a Dodger, so the Padres lost.
The Padres are hoping that Antonelli is the new Josh Barfield.
Black may get "creative" with the lineup this evening. (Please put Adrian in CF, please put Adrian in CF...)
Jeff Kent won't be missed.
On a non-baseball related note, I was sad to read this morning that Captain Mike Ambrose passed away over the weekend.
Cha Cha takes on Sammy Clayton Kershaw tonight. Game time is 7:10pm PDT.

Speaking of Assface/Needlebutt/Dickhead
Looks like Assface/Needlebutt/Dickhead JR. is following in dad’s footsteps at being a prick.
Barf. Spent a weekend up in Washington watching the Nationals destroy the Dodgers and Braves, who seem to be determined to enter the Strasburg race themselves, despite the fact that they’d turn down the Holy Grail if it were represented by Scott Boras. Also picked up my tickets for the pivotal Sept. 19th series between the Padres and Nationals. . .
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Unnamed sources report
That a brawl erupted amongst the three minor-leaguers after a heated “My dad has more credibility than your dad” debate. The other two players’ dads are a former Enron executive and a tobacco company lawyer, respectively

I feel bad for Capt. Mike
that was a sad story about him dying alone, sick and depressed.

Wasn't it?
It totally made me sad. That guy was, like, the king of San Diego throughout the 80’s.

New beginnings
…in September. I’m starting to feel like it’s spring training with all of these new faces. My internal clock is totally thrown off. I can’t stop thinking about 2009.
…and then it hits me …100 Losses…something to root for… the ’burg…must finish season…still 2008…ugh…

100 Losses
The math is starting to look bad on that one. They need to go 9-16 the rest of the way to pull that off. That’s a .360 Win% and they currently have a .387 Win% on the season. That means that they have to WORSE than they’ve played all season to get there. At their current rate they will finish 63-99 (rounding up though, so they got that going for them).

Why are we keeping Baek around?
Is it possible that they are still strongly considering this Mariner thrown overboard by Captain Bavasi as a potential starter in 2009? Please…somebody, tell me that’s not the case.

I have to believe
That they just want him to soak innings. They’ll probably keep him through spring training next year as injury insurance. The theory is that you could do worse as a 5th starter (see Darrell May and Tim Redding circa 2005 or even Ismael Valdez circa 2004 or David Wells circa 2007) and he’s consistently not awful (backhanded compliment intended).

When will we have all of our bases covered?
I know that it’s no small task to find 4 above-average infielders, but doesn’t it seem like there is always at least one glaring, gaping hole in our infield? It was 3rd base for a couple of years and now it’s 2nd. Ironically, third is now a clusterf^*k and we can’t find a 2nd baseman who hits and fields.
GO BEAVERS!

2B problem
This is a common problem. Second base can be a difficult spot to fill. Most 2Bs are SS that can’t field (and often will not be able to handle 2B either. See EGon), are defensive guys with good secondary skills (i.e. stolen bases, baserunning, bunting. See MGiles.) that don’t hit (and teams will only tolerate these guys until they find someone better) or because of the athleticism needed at the position age quickly and become a burden at the position (See TIguchi).
So you have to find a young guy that is basically a good hitting SS who isn’t as quite as good defensively as your starting SS (Dustin Pedroia, Orlando Hudson, Brandon Phillips, Brian Roberts, Mark Ellis, etc) or someone whose bat is so good that you can ignore their defense (Ian Kinsler, Dan Uggla, Aki Iwamura, Jeff Kent). The first one is a premium skill set that is hard to find and the second can quickly become liabilities if their bat goes. I think Antonelli could be in the second skill set and last a while due to his athleticism. He just needs to make sure he doesn’t recreate the mechanical problems he started 2008 with.
