Open Thread, 9/11: Padres vs Giants

San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres, Sep 11, 2008 7:05 PM PDT

Because of the 9/11 attacks, Jon and I got to see some November baseball live and in person 7 years ago. We drove from San Diego to Phoenix in something like 3 hours flat. Back before they called them MX-5's, I had bought a new "Miata" earlier in the year 2001 and we tried our luck at testing Japanese engineering. Jon eased that little car up to 130 mph before we started to physically lift up off the highway and I could feel my balls crawl up into my spleen.

Back before they called it Chase Field, we watched the World Series in all its glory at "the B.O.B." I remember thinking how we should probably look out for terrorists. I also remember a Yankee fan ribbing me and Jon for wearing our Padres hats and I silently cursed him and sure enough, the Red Sox have won two World Series Championships to the Yankees' zero since I laid that curse down.

Seems like a long time ago.

GO PADRES!!!

Padre Caps

If I remember correctly Gwynn tossed out the first pitch of game 6, so we weren’t that crazy.
I also remember your car topping out at 117 with the top down in the heat. But at 2 am with the top up it went 13 mph faster.

Why did this go up so early?

Scheduling these things early causes some strange behavior.

I thought

that maybe you ran out of time yesterday, so you decided to get an extra early start on it today. Dedication, it’s what makes GLB such a “special” place.

Any Drama sightings in SD?

yeah and the one that i lived in CT

i made the trip to boston that night to watch the game at Jillians (right outside stadium behind the left center field wall) just to see the celebration and be near someone that won for a change.

because, you see, in 2004, Sawks fans weren’t super douchy yet. i actually rooted for that team, being filled with a bunch of overweight blue collar lookin midwestern white dudes and some crazy dominicans.

it wasnt really until after that that they became completely insufferable. winning does that to new england teams (see: celtics, boston and patriots, new england)

When Macias and Ekstrom got called up

There were 10 people already in the clubhouse that they knew from the 2007 San Antonio team. From AA in ‘07 to the bigs in ’08. 12 people, that’s incredible.
