SLPiH - Saturday Edition
TIED FOR FIRST IN THE RACE FOR THE STRASBURG
Jake Peavy going up against Glendon Rusch...of course this team is going to find a way to lose.
The franchise right now is a complete and total clusterf**k...and it there is a very real possibilty it's going to get worse - much worse. The failed attempt to trade Giles has the players concerned about the Moores divorce, questioning the direction of the team and worried about a massive payroll cut.
The Padres are "a little concerned" about Bard's right elbow.
The Savior is hot and Cla Meredith is not.
Via Winfield's Ghost...the owners are finally taking a look at the ridiculous blackout rules fans get routinely screwed by.
Some sad news to report, actor-comedian Bernie Mac died of complications from pneumonia this morning in Chicago.
Mad Dog vs. Aaron Cook. First pitch is at 5:05pm. Cook is 10-3 with an ERA of 2.41 in 18 career starts against us. In other words...go see a movie, spend some time with your significant other, play with the kids or read a good book.

In all seriousness
If the players are now willing to go on the record about concerns they have regarding the divorce and how it might potentially affect the team and the payroll, then this entire organization may be right on the edge of crashing to the ground. This entire season has been a disappointment, but reading that article and hearing Giles voice what probably a lot of the players are thinking – and rightfully so – just absolutely sucked.

Agreed.
The serious implications of that article are frightening. The divorce is huge problem for this franchise. It should not be discounted in any way. If a salary dump is in the cards…it wouldn’t shock me to see KT heading north. I would.

Giles...
Giles really, really wants to be here for the rest of his career…that’s pretty apparent. If he is voicing this after blocking the trade and hoping his option is picked up next season….imagine how honest he would have been if he had accepted the trade to Boston.

I need to do more research
Community Property includes anything acquired during the marriage except for inheritance or items purchased with and titled as separate property. California courts presumptively divide each item of SP 50/50 unless there’s a really good reason not to – like it’s a baseball team and partition will be a freaking disaster – but whenever courts don’t split things 50/50, there has to be an offset elsewhere – and JM would have to agree to pay it. This could be bigger than a simple clusterf*k. And the real issue is how dedicated is Moores to maintaining control of the team and how much does he give a sht after this season?
What are the Padres actually worth? When did JM buy the Padres – before or after marriage? Did he buy them personally or did he buy them through a business or something? Did he buy them with his own personal wealth acquired before the marriage? Did the value of the Padres increase significantly since they were acquired? Is Petco a separate Moores asset, or is it owned by the Padres? I need to know more!!! What other assets are JM and the wifey fighting over? What kind of net reduction in personal worth is Moores looking at?
Ugh! Why did i have to study this crap for the Bar?!
If you know the answers to any of these questions, I would love to know so I can start trying to make sense of this mess.

THEORY!!!
I’m brilliant! This season makes sense now!
Since Moores acquired the Padres in 94, they’ve actually been successful. The problem with that, plus building Petco, is that it’s actually made the Padres worth something. So, Moores and his divorce legal team came up with a brilliant strategy – run the Padres into the ground so that they are worth less than nothing so that when the divorce decree is final, the team is worth $0 of the Moores’s $450m estate, Beck gets $225 and washes her hands of the worthless Padres, and Moores can pretend that the ‘08 season was just a bad bad bad dream while he gets around to making the Padres a valuable commodity again! It’s brilliant!!!
Too bad it won’t work….

Smells Like Tijuana in Here
This past offseason, I asked myself, WTF is KT doing? What is the plan? ... it seemed like there was no plan. They were just going to wing it, and cross their fingers and hope.
I’m getting the exact same feeling right now, except worse. Could somebody please show me that this club has a direction. Could the FO stop the propaganda and start being honest with themselves, the players, and the fans.
I am willing to wait until 2011 to win the World Series, but in the mean time, DON”T OSTRICHSIZE ME! I am better than that and I will not tolerate being treated like a small Ostrich.
If we’re not going to win now, than what the hell are we doing?
I don’t think the fans can stomach another month of dollar dogs… Sandy, you’re going to have to get us all really, really drunk until you figure out what’s going on here. I’m talking dollar beer nights drunk. Drama streaking the field drunk. People barfing off the Western Metal balconies drunk. The crowd cheering loudly for Justin Huber drunk.
Hammered. That’ the only way this organization makes any sense…GO Padres!!!

Lest we forget...
Los Cargadores are playing their first pre-season game tonight. Even w/o LT, Rivers, Gates, etc. it should be better than watching Aaron Cook belittle the bats and Mad Dog not win.

Messy divorce = ?
I am now interested in the implications of the divorce on this team. We were told all is cumbaya and the team was their priority. If John and Becky are now fighting over access to their box, is this the sign of things to come and the team gets dragged down the tubes in a messy divorce? If the Padres are $400 mil of their $850 mil net worth, then one of them will have to cash out and dump everything to retain the team. Does this mean a salary dump and years of mediocrity?

In that case
we should make them sell the team, they can split the money, and everyone can be happy.

People don’t buy teams because of their win-loss record. They buy them because they keep going up in value and it gets you in with the cool crowd.
