Red Sox claim Brian Giles
Looks to me like the Red Sox put the claim in to block the Rays and Angels who both could potentially use Giles as an extra outfielder in their post season runs. Taking into account the fact that Giles could block a trade with the Red Sox, this looks more like an Epstein metagame move as opposed to loading up the team.
I'd say pretty decent chance Giles stays with the Padres.

Won't happen
They have zero use for Giles.
But if they want to trade Lester and Ellsbury for him, I’ll listen.

With David Ortiz wrist problem
Maybe they would pick up Giles for backup. I don’t think Giles will get traded personally but what if they started talks around someone like Jed Lowrie, I would be very interested.

After they trade for Giles
they’re going to call the Mets and ask about Oliver Perez.

they CAN trade him to Boston
“Giles has a limited no-trade clause, and Boston is among the teams to which he can be traded without his permission.”

Actually, it reads

Update from Tom Krasovic...
More info concerning the possible Padres-Red Sox trade involving Giles.
The close relationship between Padres General Manager Kevin Towers and Red Sox GM Theo Epstein, his former top assistant, can only help the chances of a deal getting done within the 48-hour window.By getting creative, Towers and Epstein might arrange for Giles to return to the Padres this offseason.
Giles’ contract stipulates a $9 million club option for 2009 with a $3 million buyout; if he is traded, the option - in addition to his current $9 million salary - would rise to $11 million.
Giles can decide to ride out the season with the Padres. Or the Red Sox simply might choose to block the right fielder from being traded to another playoff contender.
Nonetheless, there are three potential winners to a trade—the Padres, Red Sox and Giles.
Giles could gain at least $600,000 in extra salary, plus the chance to play for the defending World Series champions with the possibility of returning to San Diego next season.

Just to clarify
I mean get traded, hit an important homerun for WS champ, then return home to us for next year.
by A Whales Vajayjay on Aug 7, 2008 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've been advocating this for a while
The important homerun is a new twist. If a team buys out his option, it probably means he won’t want as much money for 2009, plus he’s getting old and may want to retire a Padre. It would be easy enough for him to come back at a reduced price instead of the Padres keeping him this year, and picking up his $9 million option.

So we're just waiting to see if we
1) actually give Briles away
2) actually fail to get anything in return
Then we can call it a fire sale and look forward to many years of ”. . . and we gave away so-and-so who is now doing amazing for such-and-such team” right?

If we get back even ONE good prospect and get Giles back at a cheaper price next season…it’s brilliant.

That was different.
That was Theo’s own fault. He got backed into a corner and made a huge mistake. He knows that. This isn’t like when Jon Daniels and KT cruised up to Daniels suite at the Hyatt during the GM meetings and woke up 24 hours later in a bathtub of ice without a liver and a cordless telephone duct-taped to his hand.

Hey Paders fans...
How would Giles handle CF? He’s one of he best corner outfielders according to the zone-based defensive ratings. Is there a reason that wouldn’t translate into at least a league-average CF? If so, the Red Sox might have put Giles in center and benched Coco/Ellsbury.
Also, why wouldn’t any NL teams claim Giles? The Mets and Cardinal have big OF holes, and Giles’ contract is a favorable one.

Actually Giles has played CF
a couple times for SD. I have at least one photo of him there, at Petco, to prove it.
Irregardless of where he plays, he goes all out. The Padres season is TOAST, but he still goes after every ball hit, full speed into the wall if needed.
He is still fun to watch and brings shenanigans to the otherwise shambles of a season.
The 8 teams Giles can veto, including 4 NL teams: Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Florida, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Washington.

Waivers
Most teams have a sense of who teams will really let through waivers. The Cards and Mets probably knew that they would have to work out a deal to get Giles. For all we know they have already inquired about Giles earlier and didn’t like the price (in prospects). Giles was never going to be released so a claiming team is just waiting their time trying to claim him and by blocking the player for the sake of blocking him they risk creating bad relations with a future trade partner. Not to mention Giles was going to cost the claiming team at least $7 million ($2 million poison pill + $5 million buyout for 2009) plus his remaining 2008 salary for less than 2 months of work. Plenty of players make it through waivers and plenty of players don’t get claimed even though they would be useful to teams. Teams just know that they have to pick their battles. In this case, the Red Sox thought it was worth all this to keep Giles away from a couple of contenders and to make a play at him for themselves.
As for the CF thing. I’d have to think Drew is a better CF right now than the 38 year old San Diegan.

I imagine he'd be capable,
but i’ve always gotten the impression that he doesn’t really have the stamina and range for CF. He’s all-out in RF, though, and the idea of someone else having to learn the Petco RF quirks terrifies me.
