The Padres have 48 hours to make a deal with this team, or possibly take him back if they'd like. Who could this team be?

I still love how Boston is in his no trade clause
Giles has a partial no-trade clause in which he can veto a trade to eight teams: Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Florida, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Washington.

I'll bet it's the Cubs. I hate them.

With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good!

Why would the Cubs need 2 Left-handed hitting RF?

The only reason it could be them - move Fukudome to CF, and release Edmonds. However, Jimmy Ballgame/Reed Johnson have been more than adequate in CF as a lefty-righty platoon. If Giles had any experience at 1B - this would then make sense, because Daryl Ward could be DFA’ed. Giles could then spell Fukudome, and Lee.

Your ‘hatred’ of the Cubs notwithstanding, I doubt if they claimed Giles. They may have had interest in him in the past, but I doubt if they do right now.

Many teams will do place a player on waivers to see if anybody claims him, and what he might bring in return. If the ‘deal’ looks bad—no harm done. Then, they pull him off waivers. I think Giles is not going to be moved.

The way this season has evolved, why NOT see what one of your best players might bring in return?

Correct.

I’m assuming that by ‘hatred’, friarinchicago meant ‘hatred’.

And by 'Cubs' he meant

Just so it's clear

Smooth Jazz Man’s comment didn’t mention the Cubs payroll or anything so this is just us taking semi-random shots at Cubs Fan in general and not Smooth Jazz in particular.

I’m just trying to curb the eventual flamewar.

No, what would I have against Smooth Jazz, I don't even know him.

I guess “hate” was just too tongue-in-cheek from the get-go. I’m just being playful. I was just a little bitter about the Cubs (Yanks, BoSox) being able to get what they want because of their fatty checkbooks.

With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good!

But, living in Cubs country, they do get on your nerves.

I think "get what they want"

refers to 2 of the 3 teams you reference. Until the Cubs make the World Series, no Cubs fan has gotten ‘what we want.” I’m totally amazed at the angst toward a team that hasn’t won. The angst should be with Cubs fans, not fans of other teams. The Cubs get beat like a drum everytime they come to town, no matter what the Padres record is.

Unless MLB comes up with some other revenue-sharing than the luxury tax, big markets have more money. That’s the way it is.

I’d be more angry about the ‘bait and switch’ that’s been pulled in this market, regarding Petco Park and the team’s competitiveness. That’s what Prop C was all about, allegedly.

Unless —John Moores is trying to drive down the team’s value in the divorce proceedings, but that’s very unlikely.

I don't understand the "Bait and Switch" thing

The Padres have spent more and been more competetive since moving into Petco just like they said they would. I never understand the people who hate management for efficiently running a business and trying to keep ticket prices down.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Mets and Diamondbacks seem like very good possibilities.

If Giles go bye-bye

What is the OF configuration?

Who moves to RF? Giles has been there, like, forever.

I'd guess Gerut, with Hairston in center.

I kinda would've thought the opposite

Maybe Hairston just physically looks like a corner outfielder to me.

So long Gilly....

It will look weird to see him playing for the Mets with a dark tan. He can hang out with Fabrrrvrve and even give him a shave.

It is downright depressing to watch the team go into full salary dump mode.

Interesting blog post by Depo on the rules regarding waivers. I’m still not sure how this works…

I'm not saying this isn't a distinct possibility,

because it certainly is, but my favorite line is “at this point it’s all guesswork”. Isn’t everything Rosenthal writes guesswork?

Say it ain't so

I like the idea of getting Haiston more playing time, but when I think of what the market in ‘09 will be for outfielders – ~one year at nine million, his full cost if his option is picked up – we won’t get someone of Giles’ value. Think Geoff Jenkins. Or worse.

by Billy Almon on Aug 7, 2008 7:47 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Worse than Geoff Jenkins? Jeromy Burnitz comeback?

He still has the no-trade

but he’s not in the lineup today. You know something’s up then.

Could be

that it’s just a day off on a day game following a night game also. U-T reporting that the other two teams that put claims on him (or tried) was Tampa Bay and the Angels.

Those are the only teams after the BoSox

on the waver wire. They didn’t try to claim him because they can’t.

day off for Giles

they said on 1090 that this was a scheduled day off for Giles because Santana is on the mound. Black had talked about using EGon out in RF but Gerut has been HOT lately.
