Would the Padres move Jake Peavy?
ESPN First Take just mentioned a "baseball scout" (probably not affiliated with the Padres) who suggests that the Padres really need to make a move on the order of what the A's do and potentially move Jake Peavy to a team for something like 6 quality prospects. Went on to say that a Padres insider called the team a "bad joke".
Any trade involving Jake Peavy would be a blockbuster. How would people feel losing our resident Jägermeister-drinking, deer-hunting, rib-breaking, CY-Award-winning, fake-cop-ignoring, underage-girl-flirting, blind-in-one-eye, ace starter?
I'd be bummed, but mostly because of the loss of so many great things to blog about.

I voted no...
but mostly because I don’t have confidence that our front office could get the return necessary. I mean, it’s one thing for the A’s to do it, because it seems like they have a player every year they can swap for high-ceiling prospects. For them, the hits balance out the misses. By trading Jake, I think it’d be either hit or miss.

My sentiments exactly
The A’s have a fairly decent record when it comes to this type of thing. I really think the Padres front office would botch this trade. Enough with the single A prospects already. heh

I don't understand
..how a “no” vote is possible. I could come up with any number of hypothetical trades I would want KT to pull the trigger on.
Is the question: should we be shopping Jake Peavy? Depends entirely on what the FO thinks it can accomplish over the next couple years, and who in the minors can contribute in the short term. If the team over the next few years is literally going to be just Jake, CY, Adrian, & a Bunch of Other Guys, a trade is certainly worth exploring.

Before making the trade
Kevin Towers needs to write his version of MoneyBall in order to prove that he’s as good an author as Billy Beane. Once he does that, he can trade Peavy for prospects.

This is completely hypothetical
Any trade that KT would accept for Peavy would absolutely cripple the team trading for him. They’d basically be switching places with us.

To help illustrate my point
I went back and looked at the last 30+ years of Cy Young award winners. Every time one of them was traded (after their breakout seasons) it was because their contract was about to expire (think Sabathia or Pedro) or they were old (think Randy Johnson to Yankees and back to DBacks) or they were not as effective (think Gagne to Red Sox).
The exceptions are:
Frank Viola (Min-NYM) – trade most likely due to monitory reasons (read: Twins are cheap) and they got a decent enough haul. A top closer (Aguilera) and a decent big league starter (Tapani) and a bunch of good prospects that fizzled out. The Padres would obviously want to get more than that using this trade as a lesson (althought Twins did get a championship with these players a couple years later).
Roger Clemens (Tor-NYY) – This was a mostly a cost savings move since the Blue Jays realized they couldn’t spend money like they used to. However, they got David Wells in his prime and one of the top lefty relievers (Graeme Lloyd). Okay haul, coulda been better if Yankees didn’t know that the Blue Jays had to trade Clemens. Clemens was also 36 at the time and one of the games highest paid starters (Peavy is neither of those). IOW, Peavy is worth more than this.
LaMar Hoyt (ChW-SD) – This could almost be seen as a loss of effectiveness trade (Hoyt followed up his Cy Young campaign with a bad year), but the Pale Hose got a decent haul for him. They got Ozzie Guillen, Tim Lollar, Luis Salazar and prospect Bill Long. So a SS of the future, a decent major league pitcher, a quality major league utility player and a decent prospect that fizzled out. Okay, maybe that haul was not so good. In any case, Peavy would demand more as he is not coming of a down year and is not suspected of any drug problems.
There is virtually no precedent to go one for teams to try to formulate a deal around. Mostly because the Padres have absolutely no need to trade Peavy and thus can always wait for a better deal. In addition to all this, Peavy draws a crowd when he pitches and since the business of baseball is to get butts in seats, that can’t be overlooked.
All that being said. I still voted yes. No player is untouchable for the right price.

Peavy for ARod straight up
and Yankees cover his salary insanity, and i’d consider it.

I'd do it if they covered 2/3 of his salary
But that’s as low as I go. ARod is 32 after all, and I’d need to be sure he could play SS for a couple of years.
And yes. I’m dead serious.

I’m not sure I understand what all these scouts are seeing. The Padres are a team that lives and dies with its pitching, evidenced by this season, and to fix that they should trade the best pitcher in baseball? This team will be competitive again by no later than 2010, when Peavy’s extension will just start coming into play.
Then again, if the Rays want to offer Price, Longoria, and Upton for him, I’d listen.

Peavy's no trade clause
May cause a problem.
But assuming this is only a hypothetical: I was super excited for the extension, but looking at what the A’s have done i’ve gotten jealous. I’m borderline.
Obviously it would have to be a top prospect surrounded by a package. If the Orioles offered Matt Weiters and a couple top pitching prospects I wouldn’t be too heartbroken. This sounds exactly like what Ray said above me, for what it’s worth.

I voted no
But I have to say, Jake might not exercise his no trade clause the way this team’s been playing. Remember how he kept saying he wanted tobe on a winning team?
