The Padres are releasing second baseman Tadahito Iguchi and pitcher Brett Tomko to open roster spots for second baseman Matt Antonelli and pitcher Wade LeBlanc. Both Iguchi and Tomko were told of the move after the team's 2-1 win over the Rockies today at Petco Park.

Iguchi

Geez, I guess .240 finally doesn’t make you a starter especially when Edgar was hitting close to .300 before he came back. Were the Padres really trying to lose to get Strausberg or set some kind of record for fewest runs scored?

I don't get this

Why release Iguchi when rosters expand today anyway? It doesn’t save money. It just seems mean.

I second that

I demand an explanation from someone who knows what the hell this is about!

I thought that when you released someone, you had X days to find someone to trade them to, but I think last night was the deadline to add someone to your postseason roster.

So, what gives?

Even though rosters expand, you can only add people that are already on your 40

man roster, which neither LeBlanc or Antonelli were. So you have to open up spots on there. I think there are rules that say those on the DL have to be or are included on the 40 man roster, so in order to free up spots on the 40 man for those two, you had to remove two others, and neither of them were eligible to be outrighted to AAA (Which is what they did to Josh Banks to get someone else up). Now what I am unsure of about is that I thought you could move someone from the 15 Day DL to the 60 Day DL to add someone to the 40 man roster, so they could have moved a Barrett or Greene to that since they are done for the season, however, I think there are rules about that, too, but I am unsure. Sounds like a question for Hey Scan.

antonelli

But I guess hitting .215 in Triple A does earn you the future of the position label within the franchise. I guess once he got it over the mendoza line he was golden, since he hit in the .100s most of the year.

Antonelli

I’m fine with promoting him. He’s had a bad year. So what? So have most of the guys at the major league level. He has been a part of their long term plans since they drafted him and this gives them a chance to add him to the 40 man and to see him in a no-pressure situation to take a look. This isn’t a move to screw anybody this season – the season is over and Iguchi was a major disappointment – this is a move to see what they have in Antonelli and if he’s really going to figure into the major league roster in the next two yrs.
