Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

SLPiH - Saturday Edition

The win streak has left the building. Good, because I was getting a bit uncomfortable.

If you missed out yesterday afternoon, there was a flurry of moves made that left the roster looking like opening day. Let me catch you up:

  • Harrison (Hairston): DL, Done for season
  • Gey for Gerut: Day to day, sprained middle finger
  • Will Venable and Josh Geer had their contracts purchased
  • Banks foreclosed upon, Cla Meredith recalled
  • The Padres renewed their vows to Beaverdom
  • The Sauce was claimed by the Diamondbacks

Naturally, all the coverage and discussion you'd ever need took place here.

Star-divide

Optimist Island: Will Venable hit a triple ("a triple," you say? I KNOW!) and subsequently scored on a wild pitch. Nick Hundley jacked his 4th bomb. Rookie preview started a few days early.

Pessimist Penninsula: The Rockies. Yup, they're still here. Dirk Hayhurst is overmatched at this level. Adrian hasn't hit a HR in a long time (8/09 @ COL).

Strasburg News: The Mariners and the Nationals both found it within themselves to win a game. RoxGirl said we have to get him so the Giants don't. Why would she even say that? Oh... troll'd... damnit.

Cha-ching:

The Padres continue to pour large sums into their farm system. When negotiations with fourth-round draft pick Jason Kipnis fizzled, the Padres ultimately turned to yet another foreign teenager and reached terms for $325,000.

Dominican third baseman Yferi Peña, pending a physical exam, will join a quintet of teenagers signed last month. Randy Smith, the Padres' director of international scouting, said the club's investment of nearly $5.2 million in the international amateur market this year ranks “among the top two or three, if not first,” among all major league clubs.

Smith, who is in his 19th season with the club, said that under CEO Sandy Alderson, the club's investments in its farm ystem far exceed any he can recall by previous regimes.

That's some serious change, Friar Faithful.

Forty years ago today, Dodger coach Preston Gomez was announced as the first manager of the San Diego Padres.

Josh Geer makes the start tonight for his ML debut against Ubaldo Jimenez. Giles and Savior say he works both sides of the plate and he doesn't light up the gun but will attack the strike zone. First pitch is 7:05PM PT. Apparently it will not be televised locally.

Geez

We’re even shipping jobs overseas in baseball nowadays.

17. Speaking to reporters, IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized:
(a) The Chinese government, for reportedly sentencing two protest-permit-filing septuagenarian women to a labor re-education camp
(b) The IOC, for reportedly cutting a secret deal allowing Chinese Internet censorship of foreign journalists
(c) The Chinese government, for revoking the visa of former Olympian and Team Darfur activist Joey Cheek
(d) The IOC, for saying nothing about Cheek
(e) Bolt, for being happy

Well in all fairness

This was a fox game that they rejected about a month ago. Padres moved the game to a night game and Channel 4 never picked it up.

With all due respect, you are not allowed to find our division rivals sexy.
