"They're going to miss him when he's gone," he said. "You don't realize how much better he makes the guys in front of him. I saw it with Lee Smith after he he left the Cubs. Hoffy's a good teammate, a good leader, a good dude. He likes baseball. He's a baseball player. He's not a closer or a pitcher or a Padre … he's a friggin' baseball player."

That same article has KT declining to comment on Hoffman
Usually, if they are thinking about bring a guy back they’ll say “If Hoffman wants to come back next year, then we would be open to consider that.” or “If Hoffman wants to come back next year, then we would love to have him.” The declining to comment makes me think that there is no chance he comes back as a Padre next year, retiring or not. Am I reading too much into that?
At least he’s not under contract next year. No Brett Favre scenario in America’s Finest.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Peavy's quote nailed it
“But I’m excited for him that he’ll be on a team that has a chance to win,” Peavy said.
Not “has a chance to make the playoffs, not "on a team that’s a contender”, but “that has a chance to win.” I still think the Padres slogan should be “Keep it close” rather than “Keep the faith”
If you can't learn to do something well, learn to enjoy doing it poorly
