Smells Like Padres in Here - Wednesday Edition
I go away for one week and you guys let Maddux go? Nice.
Many thanks to Drama and Axion for filling in during my absence. And I apologize in advance if anything posted here this morning has already been posted - just got back last night and haven't had time to read through everything from the last week.
John Moores is moving some of his stuff back to Texas. Probably storing it in Drama's garage.
Your minor league update. I was at the Latos game on Monday and I hope to have a write-up later today. Or tomorrow. Or Friday. (Look, for the first time in forever, I'm actually busy. Kindergarten starts next week. And not for me, wiseguys.)
The umps are not happy about instant replay. Because getting things right is such a ridiculous idea.
Peavy takes on Haren tonight at the ridiculous start time of 6:40pm PDT.

Towers said the club will choose from among three Triple-A pitchers — Dirk Hayhurst, Josh Geer and Cesar Ramos — to assume Maddux’s start Saturday against the Giants.
The season is done. Hayhurst seems like a nice guy (and is a funny writer). I’d like to see him get a start in the bigs.

The season wasn't done before?
Until Maddux is traded you still thought we were gonna win every remaining game on the way to a World Series Championship?

"Fat Toad" Irabu assault
Ex-Yankee Irabu arrested over assault
Irabu admitted that he had drunk around 20 jugs of beer and was infuriated when the machine did not read his credit card, a police official told AFP by telephone.
The former pitcher grabbed the bar’s 22-year-old manager by the collar, pushed him against the wall and yanked his hair, the official said. He also threw ashtrays and beer bottles, prompting staff to call police.

jbox is angry that Irabu went into the slammer as a former Yankee.

There's a joke somewhere
About the part where he was throwing things around, but I can’t come up with a good one.

One staff member described the scene,
“He threw all kinds of bottles and glasses, but he still couldn’t find the plate.”

Clearly
the “Japanese Nolan Ryan” doesn’t fight like the American Nolan Ryan with headlocks and noogies.

The guy who wanted to be the “<a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx6AuaDDEvs" target="new">Korean Nolan Ryan" sure knew a few things about fighting in his own way.

Maddux article rules out McDonald and Elbert
I’m looking at the Dodgers top pitching prospects after those two and I have to say I hope the two guys aren’t any of them. Most of them are either really low level, struggling or both.
Better be two hitters. Pipe dream land says Hu would be a nice one to get. But they also have 2 other SS prospects in Ivan DeJesus and Jaime Pedroza that would really help our depth at the position. Jamie Hoffman, OF, can steal and hit, he seems like he’d be a “Petco” guy if there ever was one. Same goes with Xavier Paul, OF, but John Sickels calls him a 4th OF here.

Injuries
Our disabled list has been a busy one in 2008.
By the time the season is over, the Padres will have lost more than 1,000 games to the disabled list.
The number today is 914 and counting. Presently on the 15-day disabled list are pitchers Chris Young, Shawn Estes and Bryan Corey; catchers Michael Barrett and Josh Bard; and shortstop Khalil Greene. Pitchers Mark Prior and Tim Stauffer haven’t played all year.
by Drama on Aug 20, 2008 11:52 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Who the hell is counting Stauffer?
It’s a GOOD thing that that guy hasn’t pitched for us this year.
by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 20, 2008 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No Kidding
After last year’s performances I don’t him pitching for the Padres ever again. He’s a guy that needs a change of scenery, because he has left a bad taste in all our mouths.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

You know what's really sad?
If Stauffer were healthy, he would have gotten some starts this season.
