It's Official Greg Maddux was traded to the Dodgers
The Dodgers officially made the announcement that they acquired Maddux by trading two minor leaguers or cash considerations.
"It's very rare that you get the opportunity to add a pitcher like Greg even one time, let alone twice," said Colletti. "He's one of the greatest pitchers of all time and we've already seen what he can add to a team both on the field and in the clubhouse."
I hate this move. I hate the fact that now I have to watch the Padres for another month and a half without Maddux in the rotation. Is there any point watching a game now that isn't started by Peavy?
As if losing Maddux wasn't bad enough he's going to a division rival and not just any division rival, the Dodgers. Why are we helping them again?
The Padres save $1.15 million and get two Minor Leaguers that will never amount to anything or a little bit of cash.
What do fans get? A terrible team that just got worse. The 2008 Padres will go down in history as one of the worst teams in franchise history and that's really saying something..

KT was just on BP Show
Basically it boils down to this, Maddux is worth something, we’re not getting use out of him. We could better use his roster spot trying out other guys. KT doesn’t like the Dodgers and it was Maddux’s clause that made us trade with them. This is a better deal for the Padres than it was at the deadline. There’s a pool of 5 players that the Padres can take two of, and they have until Oct. 15 to pick. The “cash considerations” is more of a just-in-case clause, in case some of those 5 guys get injured, then we’d have to take cash. At the deadline, the trade was going to be the Padres paying the majority of Greg’s remaining salary and maybe getting one “non-prospect.” Now we’re getting two players who are better and splitting the remainder. Could have probably gotten better talent from some east coast teams, but it was up to Greg, and he said Dodgers only.
tl;dr: trying to help the franchise

Oh and
Greg would have stayed, and KT would def. bring him back next year if he’s interested. San Diego is probably his favorite place to pitch.

Thanks for the cliff note

You are so hard to please
What’s wrong with watching starts by Reineke and Banks? And why do you have to be so negative about the prospects were are getting? What we get beyond this year if we didn’t trade Maddux this year? I have no emotional connection with this years team whatsoever, but I do want future teams to be better than this one and the best way to do it is to get more prospects into our minor league system. Holding onto to players that help the entertainment value of an already miserable team really shouldn’t appeal to anyone.
The money savings basically helps the Padres offset the lack of attendance that are already receiving for sucking. It’s not like they are just trying to be cheap (jbox didn’t imply that, but someone will), sucking hurts the bottom line and they are looking for ways to compensate.

I'm not hard to please
Honestly if the Padres could put a 5 game winning streak together before the end of the season I’d consider it a success.

A 5 game win streak would break my heart
I’m looking forward to as many losses as possible in 2008. I would be elated if somehow the Nats could pull off a 5 game win streak and we slide into dead last. It would be such a shame to waste this season by not getting the local top prospect. I have a fear that we will dread it for years if he goes somewhere else.

This puts The Strasburg a little closer
I figure we’ll lose a few more games now that Maddux is gone (not that we would have won them anyway), making the Strasburg race a little more interesting.

If Chris Young gets shut down too....
with Wolf and now Maddux gone…..then what the hell is the rotation going to be? Is Kouz going to pitch?
I could definitely see the Pads edging the Nats in the loss column if the remainder of the season is like 7 Peavy starts followed by a comical array of retread disasters.

I'm thinking...
That we need to make it through August with our current set (maybe The Sauce or Tomko start a game or two), and then in September when the roster expands more of the young kids will get some opportunities.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

"Minor Leaguers that will never amount to anything"
You’ve got to love KT doubters… They make his wily ways so much more enjoyable.

Trading Maddux was a good thing
To anyone who thinks the Padres are idiots for trading Maddux to LA doesn’t really understand the business of baseball. When you are almost 20 games out and 30 games under .500, does it really matter. The Padres do not have a chance to win squat this year. So give the Dodgers a decent pitcher who honestly, is just OK. Then rip 2 prospects out of their farm system. It is John Moores and Sandy Alderson’s fault for thinking they can get by with the players they have been getting by with and its coming back to bite them in the butt. What should make you mad is that the owner of the Padres (Mr. Moores) is a jack*ss and is accountable for his nonexistent role as owner of this ball club. This club should have traded Brian Giles and Tadahito Iguchi as well at the trade deadline. Giles is a good ball player but he is old and expensive. Iguchi is a .240 hitter!!! And he doesnt have a contract with us for next year. So thank goodness we traded Maddux! The Padres are down right bad and need to get prospects to rebuild this team. We need to spend money and get a guy like Manny Ramirez to play left field so we can get fans into this ballpark and score some runs. Re-do the pitching staff.. get that bullpen back in order and we can compete again. Imagine if the Padres had Adrian Gonzalez hitting in front of Ramirez. Yeah! And if you think the Padres don’t have the money.. John Moores wants to bring a soccer team to San Diego and own it.. a soccer team, a sport in which no one cares!! So Moores, get the heck over yourself and SPEND MONEY AND QUIT LYING TO US PADRES FANS AND SEASON TICKET HOLDERS!! It’s a tired act when you say “we will be active in free agency” and come back with players like Jose Cruz Jr. for crying out loud. Oh and Mr. Sandy Alderson, aka Mr. Moneyball… the idea of moneyball BLOWS!
