Dodgers Get Maddux
The LA Times is reporting that the Dodgers have aquired Greg Maddux from the Padres. There is no word yet on what the Padres will get in return. I don't see any word from any other website but since ESPN is posting it, it's probably legit. It seems Estes and Tomko are headed to Portland to make their final rehab starts so this would be the right time, I guess. I hate this move, I wanted Maddux to finish in a Padre Uniform. Unless we get something outrageous from the Dodgers, I'm going to be so pissed.

Link has changed
The Times story link has changed; so has the contents. The Pads are eating some portion of his salary but not all of it; that makes this deal unlike most the McCourts have pushed for (“revenue neutral” has been their favorite catchphrase this trade season). If the Padres were to eat most of Maddux’s salary, they would necessarily have to ask for James McDonald, the best remaining pitching prospect in the organization.
Witty .sig goes here.

James McDonald
Yes, the Dodgers are going to trade one of their top pitching prospects for 6 weeks of a league average pitcher when they are bidding against no one for his services.
I can hear Journey in the background.
“Don’t Stop, Believing…”
(The last time they traded for Maddux, when they got the younger version for 8 weeks and were bidding against other teams, they gave up a soon-to-be-free-agent SS that couldn’t hit and was coming off an injury that made his defense barely league average and wasn’t going to return any draft picks. In other words they gave up a spare part, but this time they’ll give up one of their biggest minor league assets? Does that make sense to anyone?)
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Jeez. So quick to bite.
If the Dodgers weren’t going to take on salary, then the idea would be that it would be pointless for us to give up Maddux unless we asked for a player of value. May as well make an inquiry for somebody we would really want as opposed to a bag of maple bats. Since they took on salary, scareduck’s implying that it wouldn’t have made sense for the Padres to make the move.
by Dex on Aug 19, 2008 6:21 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure Sure
But a player of value does not mean one of their top prospects. The Dodgers system is pretty deep, you could get their 15th best prospect and it’s still a player of value. I know we expect KT to rob people, but you can only expect the opposition to make mildly bad decisions, not colossally bad ones.

I'd rather see LeBlanc take his spot than Estes or Tomko
Although Estes probably deserves to get back in the rotation and gives them a better chance to win, if they even want to do that.

We shouldn't push LeBlanc
If he comes up he’ll feel like he needs to prove himself in the majors. He’s already pitched a lot of innings this year. No need to risk him getting hurt. After his early season struggles I’m not even sure he’s ready yet. It’s better to throw some tired old arms out there and let them take the injury risk where it won’t cost us anything if they get hurt.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

I want to take back something
I did some math on Leblanc’s innings and he pitched ~150 last year and he’s at ~120 this year. So a mere 15% would allow him to go into the 170. So as long as he pitches less than 50 innings the rest of the year he should be fine. I didn’t realize how close Leblanc was to handling a major league full season pitching load (As opposed to, say, Clayton Kershaw who has never pitched more than 120, yet already has 130 this year — maybe that’s why they want Maddux).
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
by Wonko on Aug 19, 2008 1:27 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I don't see the downside in pushing LeBlanc up this season
There would be less pressure now than next season since we might possibly be in contention next season. Letting him come up to the bigs for a month or so would at least let him be comfortable for a promotion next season. I just feel like the next month and a half is dead time and would be a perfect chance to take a look at younger guys, LeBlanc included.

Yeah, but
The Dodgers got Casey Blake for much longer (relatively speaking). There was also competition to trade for him. When you are the only organization bidding, there isn’t much incentive to give up a lot.

Bah
I find Maddux starts pretty boring, except when he gets to field the ball. I’d like to see somebody different out there. It gives me a better feeling knowing the organization is moving forward instead of letting a guy who already has Hall of Fame numbers go out there and pad his stats. I don’t really care if Maddux makes the 2008 Padres any better. They should be as lousy as they can be, there’s no extra points for finishing with a better record if they can’t make the playoffs.

this opens up a spot in the rotation for someone that may be on the team next year and frees up some salary. Maybe we cover some of his remaining salary and they give us a B prospect.

Most August trades
Are for a player to be named later. It makes it so that you don’t have to worry about the whole waivers thing. It also buys you time. You usually have a list of guys that are possible trade candidates and you can continue to evaluate them for the rest of the year. It protects you against surprise in-season injuries and you don’t have to use a roster space for the guy. Trust me when I say that the deal had 0 percent chance of going any other way. Even the Adam Dunn deal was for basically 3 PTBNLs, where one of them is Owings, in theory, since he is on the DL and didn’t clear waivers and technically can’t be traded.

Maddog traded?

I know it’s not that huge of a deal, and likely better for the future, but come on, I’m a huge Maddux fan. I also believe that great players should move infrequently, so that there’s never any doubt which hat they need to get in the HOF with. I don’t want to see Maddux get in having to wear this:

Oh well. I hope he does well for the Dodgers, and I hope it doesn’t end in the same way it did the last time; with him pitching against the Mets in the playoffs, and hanging some fat meatballs in the strike zone which were punted out like kickballs.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Um, not to be rude
But Maddux has already played for the Dodgers. It’s not like he’s adding a new team. Or does he now have to add the Dodgers logo twice to the hat?

He’s also played for Chicago twice as well. Kenny Lofton’s played for Cleveland two or three times, but it’s more about the frequency in which he’s moved.

The FO didn't have to move Maddux.
Is it wrong to assume that there might be something of value that the Padres saw they could get the Dodgers to part with? This deal fell apart at the deadline—as far as we can know—because the Dodgers weren’t offering enough.
Revisit it a few weeks later: the Dodgers added Manny, their staff has some injuries, and the Dbacks don’t look quite so fierce anymore….They come back to the Padres with a better offer. I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt that there’s something here that helps the Padres in the next couple years (even mid-level prospects have value before they hit the majors…they can be one of the 6 you trade to get a Dan Haren).
Anyway, I’ll miss Maddux—but this has been a lost cause since May. Let him pitch for a contender while our Pads rebuild.
by goose1 on Aug 19, 2008 11:25 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I should add that the Dbacks haven't looked good since like April
The Dodgers could probably make the playoffs by adding a league average arm like Maddux. It really takes that little—think of what the Padres could have done down the stretch last year by taking innings away from Tomko/Germano/Thompson/Stauffer and giving them to a 100 ERA+ guy. Average would have gotten the job done.

Since the all Star break, the D’backs have improved their run differential from +3 to +36, thanks to a stretch where they went 17-11 and outscored opponents 145 to 112.

I guess I wasn't paying attention.
I remember seeing—probably about awhile ago now that I think about it—that the Padres and Dbacks actually had pretty much the same record from May 1st through early July (?).
But if they’re picking it up, then all the more reason why the Dodgers would see Maddux as an asset who takes innings away from a pretty shaky back end of the rotation.
God, this season is depressing.

It's okay
I wasn’t either. I stole those stats from a Baseball Prospectus article on today’s Padres-DBacks matchup. Here was the full text (by Marc Normandin):
Matchup: Padres (48-76) at Diamondbacks (64-60), 6:40 p.m. MST
Probable Starters: Josh Banks (78 1/3 IP, 4.60 RA, 1.39 WHIP, 39 K) vs. Doug Davis (99 2/3, 5.24, 1.54, 82)
Pythagorean Record: San Diego, 51-73 (474 RS, 579 RA); Arizona, 66-58 (572 RS, 536 RA)
Hit List Rankings: San Diego, #29; Arizona, #13
Prospectus: Immediately following the All-Star break, I wrote a piece for the New York Sun detailing how the Diamondbacks were on pace to become the first team to finish the season in first place in their division with a record under .500. Technically, the 1994 Rangers are the only club to ever do so, but without a divisional crown on their head, they don’t truly fit the bill. Since that time, the D’backs have gone out and made a few trades to improve their team, most notably their addition of Adam Dunn’s bat to an offense-starved lineup. Yes, they’ve lost Orlando Hudson to injury, which doesn’t do Brandon Webb any favors, but this is a team that has played better since the second half began. Since the break, the D’backs have improved their run differential from +3 to +36, thanks to a stretch where they went 17-11 and outscored opponents 145 to 112. Sadly for the D’backs, their closest rival for the divisional crown in Los Angeles did some summer shopping of their own, and came away with a few new bats to distance themselves from their sub-.500 past as well. Despite their improved play and upgrades to the team, the Snakes are further from securing the divisional title than they were when they were semi-pathetic to watch. The Dodgers and D’backs are now tied for first place with identical records, so the season begins again today for these two new-look late bloomers.

Isn’t the whole idea that the Dodgers get temporarily better by adding Maddux for the year, but the Padres might get something useful to compete with the Dodgers next year or the year after? I’m not saying this is going to turn out to be Meredith/Bard for Mirabelli, but I have to think the Padres saw something they liked.

Maddux just wants to stay near Las Vegas
I agree, he doesn’t seem to care what jersey he’s wearing at this point, he’s got his ring, several Cy Youngs, enough gold gloves for an entire team, and in a matter of weeks, he’ll pass Dickhead in overall wins. He’s admitted to being more dedicated to his family than the team he plays for, and only wants to remain close.
I wonder if this will get to a point where he’ll just start pitching for the 51s in Vegas when he’s no longer effective in the majors?

Begs the question....what the hell is Maddux doing in Vegas thats so important?
I mean, I know the guy has a family and everything. But, you know, it’s still Vegas….blackjack, coke, strippers? Seems more like a Brian Giles sort of place. Does Maddux honestly want us to believe he loves Vegas for the golf?!?

Refraining...
…from making a joke about Brian Giles, Marcus Giles, stripping and Vegas…
I bet Maddux is just doing what lot of people who live in suburbia do – claim residency to the closest reputable city, despite not actually living there, for the sake of simplicity. He’s probably in like Henderson or something on the outskirts of Las Vegas, but so people will refrain from asking where that is, just says “Las Vegas.”
Or, he really might have a gambling problem, and only wants to stay close, so he can piss away his multi-millions on blackjack, coke and strippers, but that’s not for us to really be privy to.

Just curious, Roy
Is that Warren Spahn you’re referring to as a “Dickhead?” If yes, then why?
His Grand-newphew and Grand-nieces live in San Diego and are some of my best friends.

It clearly was Clemens. Sorry Roy…

No harm no foul
I wouldn’t want to offend any of your friends, so I was about to say that me calling him dickhead has no reflection on his offspring.
Never been a fan of Clemens, if it’s isn’t obvious. The lying, drugs, wishy-washy-ulterior-motive-retirements, and racist comments among other poor characteristics that come to mind. And being a big Maddux fan, it brings me great pleasure to know he’s on his way to surpassing him.

On a baseball note....
The Padres last year gave 85 innings to the likes of Wil Ledezma, Tim Stauffer, Mike Thompson, Brett Tomko and Jack Cassel.
If there was a league average, Maddux sort of guy available in August, I have to believe the Padre front office would have been willing to part with something of actual value to get him to San Diego. It really would have been the difference between a play-in game and the actual playoffs. Hell, it could have won them the division.
Which is all just to say, I’m holding out hopes that the Dodgers might have actually given the Padres something here. Too early to say, but I’m not willing to be pessimistic yet.

If it's true
That the Dodgers are giving up two PTBNLs like someone posted then it would seem that the Padres are probably getting quantity over quality (most likely because the Dodgers wouldn’t give up quality). That isn’t to say that they won’t be decent prospects, but most likely neither will be in the top 10 Dodger prospects. And, if the prospects are pitchers, then better to have 2 than 1 (TNSTAAP).

Also
If we reference the Randy Wolf trade, where the Astros got a slightly worse pitcher for longer and were bidding for his services, the Padres got back an okay prospect. Reineke probably would slot in around #15 on the Dodgers prospect list. It would be somewhat reasonable to expect a similar return. However, like I said above, if we get 2 prospects, then I’d assume they will be of lesser value than that. But I still consider either return a good haul considering that Maddux has very little use for the Padres at this point (aside from entertaining fans for ~7 more starts).

Jeremy Bonderman, Scott Podsednik, Coco Crisp, Moisés Alou, Jason Schmidt, and David Ortiz.. Hey, if it’s on wikipedia, then it must be true.
