Open Thread: 8/14, Padres vs. Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers @ San Diego Padres

It irks me that they keep moving Peavy's starts.  In the last two weeks Peavy was suppose to face  Johan Santana and C.C. Sabathia.  In New York it would have been NL All-Star Starter vs. AL All-Star Starter and yesterday it could have been 2007 NL Cy Young vs. 2007 AL Cy Young.  That would have been an exciting game to watch.  That's something fans could get excited about during an otherwise dreadful season.  Instead they decide to give Peavy extra rest and perhaps try to get him an easier win, but he lost in New York anyway and we missed what could have been a great game last night.

Fans want to see these great match-ups, it's all we have left since we have zero chance of being in playoff contention.  Let's see what our team could do against a good pitcher and a good team.

Go Padres!!!

I've been having to DVR the Padres lately

So this will be my first time back in an OGT since probably the last weekday day game.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Go Padres!

Please end the Brewers winning streak.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Please continue the Brewers winning streak.

1-0 loss. I’m telling ya.

I was wondering

how long it would be before Jake’s floating schedule would be mentioned.

Is Jake the type of guy who wants to go for the easy win?

You mean

The one where he pitches every 5th game? Has that changed at all since he came back from injury?

I don't really think

that’s what we’re seeing here. I think the thinking is more along the lines of “Well, our team blows and we have no shot of making the playoffs. Why don’t we get Jake regular work, but give him days off when we can?”

There’s no reason to burn out his arm this year.

I agree, and Jake was never supposed to face Jeff Francis, Jeff Francis

pitched the day before we even got to Colorado and wasn’t supposed to be in that series at all. He might have been thinking of the Johan Santana match up. I am just bummed because I can’t watch on tv, but this is still a great matchup, Sheets is their ace as well.

by kdukat on Aug 14, 2008 12:46 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

still

its a (another) sign we’ve given up when Banks faces Santana AND Sabathia.

What! No bird?!

by ABY on Aug 14, 2008 3:38 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He said he was really looking forward to facing other staff aces

but who knows if that’s true. He said it was Bud Black that was making him rest.

by jbox on Aug 14, 2008 1:20 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it's a good idea to have him rest. But Sheets is an ace, too, so we will see

And it looks as if right now he might face Haren in AZ series next week maybe, they are both pitching today.

by kdukat on Aug 14, 2008 1:34 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's what I was getting at

This is one instance wherein the decision lies solely with Black, and there has been little feedback that I’ve seen on it. I am intrigued.

Coach Kentara

was pissed about Peavy not going against the good match ups. He thinks the fans have been cheated.

by jbox on Aug 14, 2008 1:38 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what I don't understand is why everyone thinks today is not a good matchup

Sheets has been their ace before they got Sabbathia and they say they are co-aces, like Webb and Haren in Az. They have the exact same line today except Jake has more strikeouts. This is definitely a battle of aces, it’s just not on tv

Yep

Last year’s NL All-Star game starter vs. this year’s.

by Axion on Aug 14, 2008 1:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You can look at it one of two ways

Jake Peavy is getting extra rest, or Josh Banks isn’t getting skipped. It makes more sense at this point to just keep a regular rotation going. This way guys always know when they are going to pitch and can plan their off-days accordingly (bullpen sessions, training room stuff, etc).

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Well, I am glad personally, I didn't want to see Peavy take a loss like that

even though he walked the guy, he had the error into scoring position and then a single, I was just glad it was no defensive problem for him.

Probably a little late to post the Baseball Prospectus game preview but I liked one of the line
The Padres don’t have much left to play for in 2008, besides throwing in some prospects and evaluating the players on the current roster, but they do get a shot at playing spoiler this weekend against the Brewers. Milwaukee is 3½ games back of Chicago and four games up in the wild-card race, but a bad weekend in San Diego could muck things up for the Brew Crew. You can’t do much better than a matchup between Sheets and Peavy, regardless of how poor the Padres have been as a club this season. None of that is their ace’s doing on the mound, and he’s even hitting .243/.275/.297 with a .203 EqA, not too shabby for a pitcher, and probably good enough to start in the Nationals’ outfield. Between the paired pitchers squaring off today, we have 283 innings with 254 strikeouts between them on the season thus far with a combined 3.02 RA. In any context a matchup between these two would be worth watching, a matchup that might be tighter still because today’s game takes place in Petco, the most pitcher-friendly venue in the majors.

The two aces have only allowed a combined 95 runs on the season (only a handful more than today’s Pirates starter, Ian Snell, has allowed by his lonesome), and they’re not that dissimilar as pitchers go, with both relying on low- to mid-90s fastballs. Sheets’ change of pace is his wicked curveball, while for Peavy it’s the slider, and though the two pitches bend in different directions, both are consistently clocked in the low 80s. Both starters are average in the G/F department, and neither of them rely on their defense too much in order to get outs, instead racking up strikeouts and keeping walks down to prevent runs from scoring. That’s a good thing for Peavy, since the Padres rank 20th in Defensive Efficiency this year, converting only 69.6 percent of balls in play into outs.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

A little late but...

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

Strasburg evaluation from Baseball Prospectus' Prospect Guru

Stephen Strasburg – Thanks Insomnia!

by Kevin Goldstein

I don’t sleep well, it’s just how it is. I often have trouble falling asleep, and when I do, I often have trouble staying asleep. That happened last night, and I could not be happier about it. I woke about around 3:30 am for no particular reason (again, it’s just how it is), and turned on the television. Thankfully, we have 24 hour Olympic coverage these days, and Universal HD happened to be in the second inning of USA’s baseball game with the Netherlands. I don’t have a ton of interest in the Olympic contest, but pitching for the Americans was Stephen Strasburg, the only college player on the team, and the guy who enters 2009 as the favorite to go number one overall. While the Dutch might not be the stiffest competition to measure by, Strasburg was utterly dominant, taking a no-hitter into the seventh and striking out 11. He has a nearly perfect pitcher’s frame and very clean mechanics. His fastball is more than plus, and his slider is a wipeout offering. His command and control are also well-above average. I really didn’t see a negative thing in the two or so hours I saw, so if he’s just the ‘odds-on’ favorite to go number one overall next June, I’d sure like to see what others think might be better, because that was one of the most impressive showings I’ve seen out of an amateur in years.

They do play baseball

but there are no pro or semi-pro teams that I know off. They are all ‘recreational’ teams. Don’t know what you mean with ex-pats but we do have a national team filled with the best players from our competition.

by sixpakfrombelgium on Aug 14, 2008 3:04 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Needless to say that is really not that baseball isn't really big in Belgium

The Mets signed a Belgian kid this month though. He is supposed to be in the minor leaugue system now. I think he’s playing in their Dominican facility or something
