Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

KT is in San Diego. Scott's pissed about the phone line. KT doesn't know what the budget will be like next year. Giles wasn't interested in the Red Sox so they didn't even get to talk about players. KT thinks the leak came from the clubhouse. This off season, he, Sandy, and John will get together and decide who fits into the budget. Nobody said anything about a $40m payroll. We lack team speed, we need to add depth to our lineup, bullpen. Miss Brocails and Linebrinks. Seriously, there wasn't discussion about Giles going to Boston, he never wanted to go, KT could tell from the beginning. The Padres will inform Bick/Giles if they're going to re-up him at the end of this season. Dykstra deal may be a stare-down 'til the deadline. We've lost considerable time due to #1 picks suffering injury, that's why it's taking so long.

Do these guys have a business plan?

“We don’t know what the budget will be for next year”?
That is completely effin’ ridiculous. What kind of multi million dollar business doesn’t have a budget set for next year?
What scares me is that this team has no direction, or if they do, they’re not letting the fans in on the plan.
We can all see what is wrong with the club…how the hell do they propose to fix it?

Why would they set the budget in August?

I think you misunderstand. Towers means he doesn’t know how much of the freed up money will be his to play with, not that he doesn’t have a clue about the financial workings of the franchise. Obviously he’s not in charge of setting the budget and it’s WAY too early to decide on next year’s budget.

You would think that as a business owner...

Moores would have a budget set for next year, which would include total payroll. This could depend on available FA’s, current players re-signing or taking offers elsewhere. But wouldn’t it seem like they would have an idea of what they wanted to spend? X amount of dollars, regardless of roster fluctuations?
Of course I misunderstand…Can you see that there is a business plan, that accounts for winning a world championship, in place?

You are very mistaken

This is a radio interview with Kevin Towers. He’s not the team owner, he’s not even the president of the club. John Moores, the team’s actual owner, never said, “I don’t know what next year’s budget will be.” They have at least until this winter to decide what they’re going to do.

Can you see that there is a business plan, that accounts for winning a world championship, in place?
I know you’re trying to be sarcastic here, but it still doesn’t make sense. Are you saying there is no business plan because they haven’t won a world series?

I am very misunderstood

I don’t care what the budget is. I don’t need to know the details of the business plan. All I want to know is that the owners of the team that I root for are working diligently to become the very best in the business…and that they won’t stop until they become the best.
Though the scale of the work that I do is infinitely smaller than that of a MLB team, I am consistently looking for ways to become better. I share my philosophies and strategies with my employees almost daily. Our customers, however, have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. What the customer does see is that our business is progressive and that we strive to be the best.
I don’t get the same feeling from the FO that signs Mark Prior and Jim Edmonds in the offseason. It seems like they’re constantly crossing their fingers and hoping that it will all work out. Don’t get me wrong, KT does an exceptional job for the most part, working with what he is given. But the higher ups, maybe not so much.

I think that is to satisfy the League that they will spend over a certain amount

so the fans won’t see a $10 million team. My understanding is that once the season’s over, they see what they have, what is available and what might come up through the farm. However, they should have 99% of that info now. We’ve got about 5 decent players and some 5 bench guys. We’ve raided our farm system, so we know what is available – nothing. What is left? High priced good free agents – Texierierierieriera, Manny, Dunn, Bradley, Vlad and a whole list of others that are either too expensive or too old and broken down – which makes them available to the pads.

Don't sign Dykstra

we get a pick at the same place next season. Use the extra money to sign Mooneyham, the top prep lefty in the draft who has his heart set on college, that million bucks or so will show him school is for losers!

They say they need more team speed and everything

but I don’t see any way for them to get speed this offseason without making a big trade and getting some. And if we were to make a trade, what do we have that anyone else would want?

I know we all want to see them compete in 09 but I don’t see how they could do that right now.
