ONE IN A ROW

Greg Maddux wins his third straight decision as the Padres hammer Aaron Cook and the Rockies 8-3.

$40 million dollar payroll for 2009? This is how rumors get started (they're started by the jealous people).  Say what you will about the Steinbrenners, Cubans and Jerry Jones of the sports world....but at least their fans know that their owner actually gives shit. Wouldn't it be smart for John Mooores to sit down with Tom Krasovic or Corey Brock and put an end to this kind of crap right now? Maybe reassure us all a little? Let us know his frustration?  Unless it's true...

Josh Bard is back on the DL.

A little T & A with Brian Giles.

CY vs. Livan Hernandez. Who's in the mood for a nooner? First pitch is at 12:05pm.

The first two paragraphs of the Krasovic article are confusing

I’ve read it three times now and I’m still not sure I understand. He’s saying that a Padres executive told a player/some players that they’d cut down to a $40 million dollar payroll? That makes no sense.

Here's how I read it...

When the f/o was, in essence, selling the trade to Giles one of them took him aside and said “Look, there are a lot of rumors swirling around that there’s going to be a salary dump this offseason. So, regardless of whether you accept this trade or not – you aren’t gonna be here in ‘09. Just accept the deal and get a chance at a ring.”

So Giles turned around and told some teammates. Someone (very possibly Giles himself) fed the info to Kras.

As for the $40 million number….who in the hell knows where that number came from.

The only thing I can think of is...

That $40 million might be the number they are trying to get to as far as “committed” payroll for 2009. That would be without free agents (but after estimated arbitration). That way they would have up to ~$30 million available for additional salary for that (money that this year we are spending on Edmonds/Hoffman/Maddux/Barrett/Wolf/Iguchi that would come off the books for 2009). This would be the oft-mentioned “payroll flexibility” that Alderson so often speaks of. My quick math using Cot’s Contracts backs this up.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

He said, she said, we said, they said, I said, you said

These are the kind of rumors that have will have fans jumping overboard before this ship sinks….

After 26 years as a season ticket holder we are relinquishing our tickets unless the Padres get new owners.

and…

If Moores cuts payroll to $40 million, Aguirre should sue him for fraud and he should lose the ballpark.

Isn’t it enough that we have to endure BAD BASEBALL day after day… without having to deal with…
John and Becky’s divorce, Sandy Alderson’s ego, Kevin Towers going to Seattle???, Buddy Black, multiple freak Injuries, and salty dollar dogs.

Where have all the Unicorns gone???
Lie to me Moores. Tell me everything is going to be all right. Let me enjoy the game of baseball without all of the b/s that seems to be the MO of your FO. I don’t want to know everything that is going on behind the scenes, I just want to believe that my team has a shot at winning….

Change the manager

I m probably in the minority in thinking but I get some enjoyment from knowing that dollar for dollar in San Diego we ge some pretty good entertainment. I have been ripping the team lately because I think Bud Black’s lack of enthusiasm is bringing down the entire team. It has been publicised that management really looks at how the pieces (players) work together. That’s how they got Division Championships for so little money.
I have felt this season we had the best hitting club in several seasons. But something is holding them back. Personally, when I see the team put runners on first and third with less than two outs, and not score, there is a problem larger than untimely hitting. As I’ve posted before, HOW ABOUT A SACRIFICE BUNT!
Additionally, when a pitcher starts a new inning and gives up a number of runs, it has to be the manager’s responsibility for not knowing how his pitcher is doing. Seriously, if I know the pitcher is tired, how come Bud Black doesn’t?
My point is, I think the Padres have a great nucleus but the players are not performing to their ability. I think this past weeks performance has backed this up. What could be so wrong with changing the field manager?

50% of inherited runners score

If a pitcher’s tired, you got two guys to go to in the bullpen and they both blew games earlier this week, that’s Adams and Bell. The starters are barely going 6.

Only now have the bats started to come around, it’s almost the middle of August.

Bud Black was not given a complete major league roster this season. This is the result.

TWO more to go

Thanks for continuing to win games for the great Maddux. I can’t wait for him to pass dickhead.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Season Tickets

My wife and I decided to to lease our season tickets for next year. (already have a buyer and money in hand). When we bought out her family for the tickets we payed $21 a seat. Next year will mark the 4th year in 5 years (and 5 years if you count that there is not a true discount anymore). Next year we will be paying $50 a seat, and its gotten to the point, that not only is it a ridiculous amount of money, when you start to factor in concession (we actually rarely use concession and just bring in our own food and beverages), and parking ($5 at the Q, to an average of $15). Next year looks like another 100L season, and they have ZERO respects for season ticket holders.

I don’t understand how this team can be financial trouble, since they don’t even pay their concession workers. Instead $6 is donated to the charity of choice of the volunteers. This keeps the City, State and Feds from collectin payroll tax, does not stimulate the local economy at all, saves them not only for taxes (I estmate its around $6 an hour for payroll, SS, Disablity and city tax). But also saves them on workers comp, training and benefits. Yet they still charge $8 for beer, and $6 for a hotdog.

I am hoping that the divorce settlment forces the Moores to sell.

Do you have access to the team's books?

That would be the only case where I think one should waste time trying to do the accounting of the Padres.

I don’t understand how this team can be financial trouble
Clearly.

Doesn’t anyone want to stick with what we know, which is this was an unsubstantiated rumor that was leaked probably from some player with a motive in the clubhouse? Rather than jump to the conclusion that payroll is going to be cut and that the franchise has zero respect for season ticket holders? Isn’t that a bit sensationalist? I’m not spending your money, but if you want to sell your tickets based on false notions, sell them to people who are going to be good fans.

that is not what I said

the prices have increase greatly. We have had tickets since 1971 and is getting to the point where its cross prohibited to attend games. Soda has gone from $2.50 for 20oz to $4.25 for a bottle (16oz). First year in petco, our tickets were $27, this year $50. Miller Lite $4.25 in first year of PETCO to $8.50 today. If I want to sell my tickets on the market place, the Padres take a 10% cut on BOTH sides. You have to buy your playoff tickets in August, and pay for every possible games, Basically 5 game series in the NLDS, 7 games in the NLCS and WS. They don’t refund your money until February. If you do a linear extrapolation of Salaries from 1995 to this 2008 season, it avereages a 2.5% increase, versus the average cost for a family of four which is at 14% annual increase.

My opinion is not based on $40M payroll, but how shitty this Ownership group have treated the paying customer. I had a good time going to games in the 2000 and 2001 teams which were way worst than this team.

And yes I do know two people who are responsible for doing the Padres Audit each year. So I do know how much the city got shafted when they went to “Volunteer” workers.
