Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Sandy talks to Billy and Darren about the International draft, Paul McAnulty, John Moores, trades, and Adrian getting snubbed because Bud Selig used to own the Milwaukee Brewers, lives in Milwaukee, and sucks. via xxsportsradio.com [4.1 MB, 17:48]

Dykstra

Sure doesn’t sound like they are planning to sign Dykstra. Can’t wait to hear what the actual injury is.

I can't help but wonder if this is a good thing

We’ll get a replacement pick at the same spot. We all agree that the organization doesn’t exactly NEED Dykstra. It sucks that it’s a local guy (from my high school) that is getting the shaft. But as the Padres go, I’ll take 2 first round picks in the 2009 draft.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Yeah I agree

It was a strange pick to begin with and I won’t be disappointed if they don’t sign him. It concerns me more that they unknowingly drafted a guy who apparently has something wrong with him. With all of the pre-draft legwork, it’s frustrating to me that they apparently didn’t know everything there was to know. I understand that things can get overlooked – or hidden – but it just doesn’t feel right.

The pre-draft legwork

Does not include complete physicals like the NFL. The blame there is on major league baseball for not implementing a draft camp like the NFL. If players don’t have to submit for physicals, then their agents aren’t going to let them. Hospital and college medical records are confidential so you can’t use those (without a player release, and like I said, an agent won’t let them do that). So you are between a rock and a hard place unless you can actually see the symptoms of an injury (player taken out of games, limps, grabs, etc.).

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Something I didn't know

The total we spent on the International draft, what was described as a big splash ($5 MM), is less than what some of the first rounders got. Interesting.

5 million USD

= 171 million Dominican Pesos = 17 million Venezualen Bolivares Fuertes = 5.2 million Australian Dollars

It appears that these children from the third world have made out just as well as their North American counterparts. Everyone except for that poor Aussie.

We got (forgive the irrestiable pun here)

a boat load of them for a total of $5 MM. The overall pick got $6 MM. I think something around $4 MM is what they’re talking with Dykstra about. If it’s top talent, it’s a bargain!
