Smells Like Padres in Here - Tuesday Edition

Maddux may never win again.  Adrian said they had to go at least 8-4 before the break or they were done.  They are now 3-4.  Gotta win five straight.  It would be nice to end this charade and start focusing on next year.

Giles will be resting for awhile.

Barrett is waiting on surgery.

Tim Sullivan says that Sabathia to the Brewers is good news for the Padres.

Good piece on Arizona's GM.

What?  (Courtesy of Drama.)

Randy Wolf takes on Andrew Miller tonight.  Wolf has been really bad lately, so there's no reason to expect anything different.  Though it would be cool if he'd throw one more great game and then we could trade him for something other than a bag of balls.  Game time is 7:05pm PDT.

(Also - can we get an update on Dex and Jon?  I'm worried that they ran out of gas in the Nevada desert.)

This Giles thing is ridiculous.

Just sit the guy. Shut it down now and have him starting back in RF for the first game of the Cardinal series in St. Louis. Counting yesterday, that would give him a full ten days of rest. Trying to hurry him back or even just using him as a pinch hitter makes no sense at all…even if we were in contention. Get him healthy.

ballpark review...

That guy clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about… I mean, he calls us an “offensive” team.

Oh wait, you think he means o-ffensive and not off-ensive? huh…

Seriously, what?
The outdoor scaffolding of the stadium though is very much like Nationals Park – exposed steelwork. The stadium backs to San Diego Bay so that the Bay is roughly behind home plate. Like Nationals Park, Petco Park was placed on a plot of land that handicapped it from maximizing the benefit of the city’s skyline.
Official Groundbreaking ceremony for the Nationals new stadium was May 4, 2006.

So you mean, they’re like Petco? Since it’s the blueprint for how to build a ballpark, now?

Two things about Petco

in response to this quote:

The building that juts into leftfield is an unadulterated rip off the Warehouse at Camden Yards. The outdoor scaffolding of the stadium though is very much like Nationals Park – exposed steelwork.

Firstly, and I could be wrong, but is the Warehouse at Camden Yards in play? I didn’t think it was, which is a significant difference between Petco and Oriole Park. Not only that, but AZ specifically touts their warehouse as a response to Oriole Park. For Petco, it was all about preserving part of the area. The same thing is going on with the Candle Factory in center.

And, as I see Axion has beat me to it, National Park was built after Petco! How stupid is this? I mean, honestly.

by Phantom on Jul 8, 2008 9:38 AM PDT   0 recs

Ridiculous

It’s not like Nationals Park and Petco opened around the same time, making it easy to confuse them. Nationals Park opened this year! On national tv! The guy also should’ve mentioned that they didn’t have a choice about the Western Metal because it’s protected as a historical building.

BTW, I’ve taken the Petco tour and I recommend it.

And one last thing I had to mention. From the Tim Sulllivan article:

They have recognized a narrow window of opportunity and are taking panes (pun intended) to pounce.

I hate, hate, hate this line. I don’t know why it rubs me so wrong. It’s just so stupid.

The comments are great as well....

“As one who has been to a dozen games at Petco, I agree with Russell and Jeremy on many points. The Western Metal building is a little contrived, and the stadium is nowhere near as nice as Camden or AT&T…”

Contrived? Is he joking

Based purely on my (poor) memory…when Lucchino and his team started putting this whole thing together I remember the whole team went on a tour of some of the top ballparks (at the time) in the country (Camden, Coors, Jacobs, etc) and did research on what the fans and the ballclubs liked about the parks…and what they didn’t. They took this research into account when designing Petco. To make an idiot comment like saying the Western Metals Building “is an unadulterated rip off the Warehouse at Camden Yards” is such an ignorant statement it makes me cringe. The Padres weren’t pretending to be the first to incorporate an existing building into their design in any way shape or form. And if “Jeremy” had actually taken the time to review a ballpark correctly, like, by…oh, I don’t know…WATCHING A GAME THERE (but who wants to watch a “riveting” Twins-Padres game)...he would have had the chance to go sit on the porch of Western Metals Building and enjoy some ice cold adult beverages while sitting at a bar that literally hangs over left field. Yeah, I remember that cool porch on the warehouse at Camden…oh, wait. And while we’re at it…can the Camden Yards ass-kissing finally cease?? Jesus Lopez. It’s been 16 years….enough already. We get it….they were the first “retro” ballpark. And to whine about how cold it is at Petco…put on a sweatshirt, Sally. My God…when I went to Camden it was 100 degrees for first pitch….at 7pm! It was humid like a damn jungle. But at least Camden is in that beautiful city of Baltimore….right? Vomit.

Agreed

It’s tough to review a ballpark without actually seeing a game there. I would also recommend taking tours for the full story of those parks.

I'm a little on edge today...

I’m sure WG would be happy to fill you guys in tomorrow on exactly why.

did you drive to houston for it?

Every time I go down there from Dallas I see billboards advertising the surgery, as if houston was the world-capital for such things…

Then, every time on the way back I see a bunch of billboards advertising “reversal” surgeries…

by pjbno4 on Jul 8, 2008 11:40 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No....right here in Austin.

There is no reversal from where I’m going.

My twenty-something wives in my latter years will never know why our attempts aren’t succesful.

Sullivan on Sabathia

I am not sure about this, but I think Sullivan left this out. If both Sabathia and Sheets walk from the Brewers at the end of this season, I want to say they will get like 5 draft picks in the first couple rounds.

They might get one for Cameron too

He only signed a 1 year deal right?

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Yep, good call

$750,000 buyout… yeah they’ll let that walk probably.

Lookout Landing

Is talking about Adrian Gonzalez. It’s fun to hear Mariner’s fans talking about how good Adrian is and how badly the Padres suck.

There is no tomorrow. Make it today."

Press Pass

Yay! We’ve wasted a ton of effort! The Padres starters are 2nd in the NL in Quality Starts at 48, behind the Dbags (52).

Adrian’s still an All-star
Edgar’s still en fuego.
Kouz is heating up, hits in 13 of last 16 games, hitting .349.

Wolfie is 3-12, 6.24 ERA, lifetime vs. the Fish
But at home, he’s a beast. (2.70 ERA, held opponents to 2 ER or less 8 times, gone 6.0 or more in seven of nine.)

I could be wrong

but I thought home plate had to face the same direction at every park.

by A Whales Vajayjay on Jul 8, 2008 6:01 PM PDT   0 recs

Wrong.

MLB recommends that it face east/northeast.
