You be the GM
In Paul Depo's newest post he challenges his readers to be the Padres GM for the upcoming trade deadline. He asks you to consider two points:
1) we've played well below our expectations, and 2) we were a timely hit away yesterday from being just seven games out of an underachieving division.
So I challenge you, Gaslamp Ball readers, What would you do as the Padres GM? I'll add a poll just like Paul's but I want specific moves.
The most likely canidates to be moved given the newest information are Randy Wolf and Greg Maddux. I don't really see Maddux going anywhere at this point so Randy Wolf is a goner. Our most glaring needs are bullpen help, centerfield, and catcher. We could also use a new SS, as I don't think we'd miss Greene's overrated defense (If you belive in rFA).
As for catcher, we have a catcher in the system named Mitch Canham who looks AWESOME and hopefully should be starting for us in a couple years. I honestly think that Hundley will be a decent major league catcher for us and he has a pretty damn good arm. Centerfield, I really like Jody Gerut out there. He's played great defense and he's hit great as well. I really don't think there is much out there that is going to be a huge upgrade over him. Chase's bat will heat up very soon in LF because he has always started slow whenever he has moved up a level. Giles is still the best player in RF at PETCO.
Basically what I'm saying is we should trade Wolf and Greene for pitching prospects. Our bullpen is AWFUL beyond Bell and our starting rotation is most likely going to consist of Jake and CY next year. Maddux is likely to retire (or be traded), Wolf will be traded, and we'll end up with a bunch of AAAA starters like Hensley, Estes, Baek, Banks, etc. (Although I really like Banks). We actually have a number of pitching prospects that are looking really hot (Garrison, Inman, etc).
The only flaw in my plan is 2B and SS. I'm gey for Edgar but he's pretty much going to go the way of Mark Loretta (high AVG lots of singles). Maybe trade him for more pitching while he is kicking ass and taking names. Where the hell are we going to find a SS. The Free Agent pool is awful. We have some pretty good prospects as trade chips but I don't really know how many good SS are available. I'm probably going to need some help on this one. So let's hear some ideas!

Totally unrealistic blockbuster for you. Wolf, Maddux and Greene to the Cubs for Ronny Cedeno, Felix Pie and Rich Hill and a player to be named. The bloom seems to be off the rose for these three prospects in Chicago. The two starters would bolster Chicago’s rotation and Greene might turn things around and be valuable if he got PETCO out of his head. Cedeno is a fast, decent fielding SS that can hit singles and be more valuable than Greene until we find another answer. If Pie and Hill can come close to living up to expectations in a new environment then this would be a huge trade for us….

It's a terrible idea
to trade Khalil right now and it’s not for the reason you’d expect from me:
His value is WAAAAY down. If we had traded him in the offseason we could have gotten a hefty haul. But to trade him now is doubly stupid. Not only do we create a gaping hole in our defense, but we’d also get a crap return for him. I’ll be the first one to say this season has been a disappointment, but he’s still extremely valuable to our club as a defender.
And sorry ‘Tec, but I really don’t trust defensive metrics. Look up five different ones and they’ll probably completely contradict each other. Defensive metrics have come a long ways but are still far from perfect. He’s been durable (weird to say about him) the past two years in a time when SS seem to be going down left and right (Tulo, Furcal, Rollins, etc.).
So sure, trade Wolf. But that’s really the only move we can make. Trading Khalil right now just makes no sense. If you want a decent return, trade Kouz.

to be totally idealistic
i would just make my team full of hot guys so that way even if they don’t win i’m still ammused
or i would trade Wolf , Demote McAnutly, get rid of Tomko as fast as possible. I would for sure keep Giles unless I could get a justifiable replacement. although i’d wait as long possible for the Wolf trade hoping that Estes and Young would be back shortly there after
You know I could go for a sandwich, but uh, I'm not gonna open two jars. I can't be opening and closing all kinds of jars.

So far
The results of this poll are pretty similar (on a smaller scale to DePo’s). Overwhelming “Sell” votes. I wonder if the FO will see this as a fan base willing to sell and start putting things in motion. However, I know for a fact that many of DePo’s readers are not Padres fans. He’s got A’s fans, sabermetrically savvy fans, baseball writer fans and DePo haters. So the poll isn’t necessarly the best representation of the San Diego fan base.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Trades
Trade Edgar high
Trade Wolf and/or Maddux
There will probably be another bullpen flip before next season anyway, so there’s that.
Acquire a catcher (Saltalamacchia, or a kid named Wieters)
Keep Giles if he finishes the year strong ($9 MM with $3MM buyout? we’d have to sign someone at $6 MM to break even. Nice deal, Gillies.)
Keep Khalil, pending class-action lawsuit against his manufacturers
Flirt with some FA SPs, not Prior.
Say goodbye to Trevor after this season
My insane 3-way trade of the minute:
Khalil to the Pirates for Bay after they send Jack Wilson to the Dogders.

I like the sell high on Edgar idea
even though I’d hate to see him go
Can we be saved? Has the damage all been done?
Is it too late to reverse what we've become?
A lesson to learn at a crucial point in time
What's mine was always yours, and yours is mine
