If we wanted to trade him, that would have been the time. Trading him now is a dumb move because we won’t get anything in return and we have nothing close to replace him. And yes, he’s a great defender. Defensive metrics are still flawed.

My thinking is this
When someone is struggling as badly as Khalil is, rather than swinging at the first pitch, regardless of the location, they need to take a pitch or two to relax, get comfortable in the box and see what the pitcher is doing. And after following two guys that got on with hits, it’s even more essential for a guy who is struggling to take the first pitch or two – maybe the guy is now going to stay off the plate, maybe he’s going to be more preoccupied with the runners. If he was in some spectacular zone of hitting, I’d say yeah, go ahead and swing away at the first good thing you see. But when everything is off – your timing, your balance, your selection of pitches to hit, your swing in general – the chances of actually getting a hit on that first pitch seem very limited.

What makes that pitch
different than other pitches to come that might not be strikes? He’s slumping on all the pitches on all at-bats, not just the first one.
I think just the opposite, Khalil needs a day or two off more than anything. He needs to get the hell out of the box as quickly as possible before his mind takes over. He’s barely lasting three pitches in there, no need to give away strike one.
