Smells Like Padres in Here - Thursday Edition

Many thanks to Drama for filling in for the last few days.  Dentists suck, especially incompetent ones.

Not a good night.  I'll be sad if Maddux is gone after today and if Khalil's hand is busted...well, that won't be good for anyone.

Speaking of Khalil, Geoff Young has an in-depth piece on Khalil's season over at Hardball Times.

Stephen Faris threw a great game at San Antonio last night.

Off day today before the Giants come to town tomorrow.  I assume there will be lots of trade discussion to fill the void.

Pretty amazing

that he actually punched something. The amount of frustration for him to get to that point has got to be staggering.

Boo hoo

Do you know how many times Khalil has made ME punch things?

I really sympathize with the guy

I do think he cares tremendously, I just think he holds himself to a standard where he can’t show emotion. The most frustrating thing about this season is that he appears to be doing some things right.

His pitches per plate appearance are the second highest they’ve ever been, as is his line drive rate. Presumably, hitting line drives and seeing more pitches should translate to greater success. What is interesting is that some of his peripheral stats (not the big 3 of OBP/AVG/SLG) are in line with his career numbers. The big difference is that his HR per flyball is way down, and his BABIP is an absurdly low .255.

It’s got to be frustrating to be trying to do things right (seeing more pitches, hitting line drives), and yet not getting results (the low BABIP is a killer). He’s still playing fantastic defense, but he’s got to be incredibly frustrated right now. Hopefully the hand injury isn’t too serious (wouldn’t it be ironic for people who have always criticized him for not showing emotion to get all over him for hurting him during such a display?), but if it is, I hope he can take some time off to just sit back and relax a bit.

Oh totally

His strike ups are way up. It’s interesting though, because he IS seeing more pitches per plate appearance. That typically translates to better pitch recognition, but it’s not a complete correlation.

His walk rate is currently 5.2 BB per 100 ABs. Last year it was 4.9 BB per 100 ABs. So his walks are up, ever so slightly, but his K rate (as you noted) has jumped from 19.4 K per 100 ABs to 23.6 K per 100.

Strike outs

rather. Not sure what a strike up would be.

I was hoping

to bait you into a Khalil argument in 3 words or fewer. I don’t think it worked, though. Dammit.

I would never have guessed that.

Oh, Kahlil...

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

returning from my bunker

Once the Pads won 4 games in the row. Took the wife, kid an dogs into my Y2K/NUCLEAR FALLOUT/OIL survival bunker until the world showed signs of returning to normal. This 2 game skid gives me peace.

Amen brother

Any ideas on how to help the Nats win A game.

Really feel bad for Kahlil

My Philly friend really gets on my nerves about how the Pads have no personality i.e. Kahlil. I really don’t care if he talks, if he keeps playin D like he does. I really think he’ll bounce back next year, but everyone seems to be screaming trade. Bad idea. There is no one out there there that would constitute a suitable replacement. Besides you really should not need your shortstop to hit 27 HRs. His offense should be icing.

Straight up and down.

I fully concur and pallishly add that the ‘h’ comes before the ‘a’.

Just peaked at the last 7 WS champs

None of them had a SS with a OBP over .320 who could hit for power. The best OBP SS was Eckstein, twice, and his defense is bad. Almost ever other SS was a good field, no OBP having career years in HRs (with the exceptions of Julio Lugo and Pokey Reese, who had no power and no OBP). The last exceptional offensive SS on WS champion was Derek Jeter in 2000, and I think most know where his defense stands. The last WS champion who had a SS who could do all three (with all apologies to Barry Larkin, who hit for power post-1990) was the 1984 Detroit Tigers with Alan Trammell and his .382 OBP, .468 SLG and reputation as a good glove man (4 GGs for what that’s worth).

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
