XX Sports Radio: Sandy Alderson Report (MP3)
Sandy is back from vacation. 0-5 While Sandy was out of town. Trading Wolf is proof they are rethinking. They are NOT rebuilding, but yes they are rebuilding. They are salvaging positives from a negative season. Mental errors frustrate FO more than fans (not likely). Not chaotic in the clubhouse, but uncertainty and chaos in clubhouse may be a cause of mental errors. Dykstra deadline is 8/15, not much progress is being made, but he'll probably sign. FO predicted 90 wins, on pace to win 62. 90 wins was not a calculation it was a composite of calculations. Next year the FO should make predictions. Focusing on the farm system in the off season instead of free agents.

"Focusing on the farm system in the off season instead of free agents."
You don’t say? I never would have guessed. Considering that it worked out so well for us this season, I see no reason to deviate from this course. It’s not like we don’t have a major-league ready front-line catcher, center fielder, left fielder, and several relievers in Portland… why would we need to pursue a free agent or two?

We focused on free agents last offseason
Bidding “war” for Fukudome
Apparently wasting our time trying to get back Bradley and Cameron
Edmonds as a result

Wasting our time trying to get back Cameron?
He wanted top play for us! We wouldn’t have him back and as karma would have it we ended up overpaying for a underperforming Edmonds.

If I recall correctly
Cameron did want to stay here. The Padres just didn’t want to give him a two-year deal.
So Edmonds took the 1 year deal that they were willing to offer.
And the Padres just didn’t offer enough to Bradley and Fukudome to retain/obtain them.
But that is how the MLB market works. But the last thing I would say investing in the free agent market is, is a waste of time. I think having Bradley, Cameron, and Fukudome on this team would yielded much different results than we’ve seen this year. Sometimes you have to pay for that. Especially when you’ve neglected your farm system for years the way the Padres have.

So he took a 1 yr deal in Milwaukee instead?
A look:
Cameron: 240 AB, 15 HR, .229 AVG, 39 RBI, 35 R, 8 SB | $7,000,000(?)
Hairston: 270 AB, 16 HR, .263 AVG, 30 RBI, 39 R, 2 SB | $406,000
Gerut: 223 AB, 6 HR, .278 AVG, 22 RBI, 28 R, 5 SB | $700,000

It can also be argued
that Cameron was a way bigger presence in the clubhouse then Hairston or Gerut. And that he motivated his teammates in ways that Hairston or Gerut cannot.
Also, I’ll take those 39 RBI over Gerut and Hairston’s numbers. Especially when the Padres lose so many close games.

You can't compare Cam's #'s to Hairy/Gey's
The fact of the matter is that if we had signed Cam to a one-year deal…HE would have been in CF while Hairy and Gey would have platooned in LF instead of that embarrassing piece of sh*t combo of Huber and P-Mac.
