Smells Like Padres in Here - Thursday Edition

Maddux_medium

It's okay, Greg.  If you wanna leave, we understand.  You shouldn't be subjected to this.

Hensley says he's the guy from 2005.

Nick Canepa takes a moment from kissing the Chargers on the mouth to tell us what we already knew.

A Cincinnati columnist pays his respects to Maddux.

Dick Williams will go into the Hall of Fame on Sunday.

This is a really nice piece on the late Mike Coolbaugh.

Hardball Times continues their breakdown of the draft and has a bit on Jaff Decker.

Clay Hensley makes his return tonight as the Padres begin a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He takes on Yoslan Herrera, who is sporting a nifty 19.50 ERA.  Is he available?  Game time is 4:05pm PDT.

The Strasburg

This is going to much tougher than I thought. The Nationals and Mariners are not going away easily.

The Nationals have now lost 21 of their last 30 ball games. Ten of their next 21 games are against the Phillies, Brewers and Mets.

The Mariners, currently riding a 5-game losing streak, have lost 11 of their last 14 games. They start a 7-game road trip tomorrow against Toronto and then Texas.

This is going to be a battle to the end.

Don't worry

The Nationals play the Braves seven more times before the season is over, and they own us like slaves before the Civil War. And I’ll be attending the Padres series in DC before the season is over, and the Nationals are 5-2 in my presence in Washington. I’ll be rooting for you guys to lose, and might post pictures here as an honorary GLB’er or something.

I’ll be paying attention to this race a whole lot more than who gets in the playoffs, because it’s more interesting.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Padres vs. Nationals...

The thing that worries me is that the Padres OWN the Nationals. Those three games at the end of Sept could swing the whole race.

Adrian's been killing us this year.

We should probably sit him that series. Or month.

It's the next to last weekend of the season

The series at new Nats Park is September 19-21. Which team has the better AAA prospects will be the team that wins the series

The Nationals were ranked as the #9 minor league system up from like 25 the year prior. It’s also their last weekend at home, before their last two series on the road. So even if the Padres lose (win) against the Nationals, the Nats still have to take on the Marlins and Phillies, both of whom have owned them all season, and will likely still be in the midst of that “other” race.

Clay Hensleyyyyyyy is back?

I may have to dust off the MLB.TV for this….Who would have thought the Pirates would have a better record than us…and teams actually want their players…

Jaff Dacker looks amazing and Jaff is an awesome name… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4weJOMO4M8

Could be trouble

The Pirates are apparently daring us to lose tonight. Think the Nats put them up to it? On the other hand, it could be that this Herrerra guy just got clobbered in his last outing because the Rockies are so damned good.
Really. I’d like to see Hensley do well tonight. He could be important once we win the Strasburg.

When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.

More trade info...

Jim Molony from MLB.com has a new article up today with this ridiculous quote from a scout in regards to Greg Maddux:

“He can still give you five, six good innings most nights, but I think that’s about it anymore,” the scout said.

Yeah, who in the hell would want a guy that can only give you “five, six good innings most nights”? Stupid.

Also in that same article…this tidbit that will make you want to vomit.

Staggering stat: In six games against Cincinnati this season, San Diego batters struck out 79 times, 49 in three games at Petco Park in a series in May and 30 more times in the three-game series at Great American Ball Park that ended Wednesday.

I love

When media outlets all quote these “scouts” and “team officials.” Unless I start hearing specifics they’re as credible as talking leprechauns. Who are these so called scouts? Minor-league scouts? People who drive Scouts? Boy Scouts? I scout attractive women when I occasionally go out to lunch. So I’m a scout, too I suppose. So according a scout:

His legacy and reputation are clearly tarnishing the fact that age is catching up with him, and that he’s no longer the same dominant finesse pitcher who is a threat for a two-hit, complete-game shutout on 87 pitches every five days, but however, with adequate run-support, Greg Maddux is still completely capable of giving you five, six good innings, most nights.

After I posted it, I was like “oh crap,” because I had typed “talking” before the noun, and leprechauns was the first thing that came from my fingers. But to answer your question, hell if I know.
