Around SBN: The 2009-2010 Card Chronicle Big East basketball preview

"The Padres have dealt left-hander Randy Wolf to the Astros for Chad Reineke, a Triple-A pitcher who has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning. A key part of the deal for the Padres is the potential financial savings. Wolf is due a $175,000 bonus for every start he makes up to his 30th start, in addition to pro-rated payments on a $4.75 million salary."

"Reineke, 26, is 5-9 with a 4.41 ERA. A starter, he has 100 strikeouts and 35 walks in 112.1 innings this season. Entering this year, he had a 3.52 career ERA with a strikeout per inning."

it's a good thing we're saving money now

because then we’ll have more money for players like randy wolf.

we can give the Savior a one zillion dollar extension

We'll save a spot for ya, Wolfie

Try to inflate your ERA a little so we can get an even better deal, too.

Feel indifferent

about Chad. What do you all think about this guy? We sure do love trading for minor leaguers.

by sacpadre on Jul 22, 2008 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't get it.

If this guy is any good…why didn’t the Astros just stick him in their rotation?

Looks like nothing more than a cost-cutting move.

by Drama on Jul 22, 2008 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

nobody understands what the astros are thinking about

they like to let minor leaguers ripen and rot on the vine.

by Dex on Jul 22, 2008 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So,

we saved a prospect that was heading for ripening and rotting?

Way to go, FOSFO.

Ripening!

We rescued him. Best move ever!

by Dex on Jul 22, 2008 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely, we save this guy

In favor of a guy who was gone at the end of the year. We get Reineke’s potential for 5-6 years instead of getting nothing as Wolf enters free agency. And the bonus… we can still bring back Wolf for 09. Would I like to get more? Hell yeah! Was it going to happen? Hello no!

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

by Wonko on Jul 22, 2008 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is basically what I am thinking.

They’ve had so many pitching problems but still won’t give this guy a chance.
I think the cost-cutting thought is probably right.

Au revoir Monsieur Wolf

What is the Wolf Pack gonna do now?

They just got all new hairy masks and schtuff.

Clay Hensley will take The Wolf’s spot in the rotation and get the start on Thursday in Pittsburgh.

by the team. If we can get Clay from 2006 and not Bizarro Clay from last year, I will be quite pleased.

Clay moving into the rotation is my favorite part of this trade

I still think the FO has given him an unfair chance to prove himself.

career 14-16 pitcher

with a 3.92 ERA and 180 K

maybe we can get him doing steroids again like 2005. at least it’d be interesting.

like it’s going to be a panacea for this god awful monstrosity of a season. every little change gets me all giddy like a kid on christmas.

see: Headley, Chase

not to mention the Bizarro Padres game a few weeks back with all the Portland guys. i LOVED that game.

You really hate him,

don’t you? And he was hurt last year. Throw the guy a bone.

Did Clay hit on Johnny Dub at somepoint? I’m clearly missing the source of animostiy here.

The Padres hopefully see Reineke as a reliever more than a starter

BA says he could possibly “blossom” with a move to the bullpen. Take that as you will.

Astros Fans Say This Reinke guy sucks

Second stink at AAA with mediocre results. Why are we still stockpiling minor league arms? Shouldn’t we be getting players at like hmmmm EVERY OTHER POSITION?? Well maybe except 1B.

Almost seems like

The Padres are trying to do the Billy Beane thing by stockpiling pitchers, cultivating them, then selling them high for good position players. Maybe I’m just in denial though about our FOs decision making abilities.

by sacpadre on Jul 22, 2008 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

everyone wants to find the next Rick Ankiel

get a bunch of pitchers and convert them all to position players.

now we just need a shitload of steroids.

Our bats are on fire. Our bullpen, not so much

A healthy dose of winter league for some of these guys and we should be more of an offensive threat next year.
We’ve got catchers coming out the yinny (it’s just that none of them are very good, once again, winter league should be mandatory).
I would hope that Kahlil turns it around before the end of this year. If not…?
The truth of the matter is a good bullpen could possibly be the hardest part of a team to put together, so why not stock it right now and see if any of these guys are good.
...And once you’ve built a decent bullpen, you need someone to mange it properly. But we’ll just have to wait until the offseason to get that one figured out.

I think this guy could be good

although it’s possible we have another slow-starter…

April: 7.27 ERA in 17.1 IP
May: 4.89 ERA in 35 IP
June: 4.37 ERA in 35 IP
July: 1.80 ERA in 25 IP

1.84 ERA over his last 44 IP (spanning 7 games and dating back to June 18)

My Only Question is....

Why are the Astros buying at the deadline? Is this their answer to Sabathia and Harden? They’ve got three good teams in front of them, they aren’t going anywhere

by Futbolista on Jul 22, 2008 3:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What are you talking about?

They have a whole 0.1% chance of winning the division!

It just hit me...

the Astros have abandoned baseball in favor of building a zoo.
They’ve got Los Caballitos (little horses, Carlos Lee), Lil Pumas (Lance Berkman), and now the Wolf Pack.

every pitcher's #'s look better @ Petco

just bring him up in the bullpen, get 2-3 good years from him and sell high…just don’t wait to long he’ll get Cla Meredith syndrome.

by kks on Jul 22, 2008 5:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This move is pretty 'meh'

It sheds salary in a finished year (Speaking of which: Hey, Jim Edmonds, it’d be cool if you could throw us back that 6 mil. No biggie. Just that you were a disaster. Like if you were Papa Johns, and I ordered a pizza, and you showed up carrying a giant bag of shit, it doesn’t seem like I have to pay you anyway, because that’s not what I really wanted now is it?)

Baseball Prospectus says this Reineke kid hasn’t really fared well as a starter, but has done better in the bullpen. No one can really argue with some bullpen help. I don’t really care about his ERA, but he seems to strike out a guy an inning, the walks and HRs aren’t terrible.

Sure, throw him out in Petco and see what happens. Sort of like with Ledezma, Glendon Rusch, Mike Adams, Joe Thatcher, Baek, Banks, Tomko, Jack Cassel, David Wells, Mike Thompson, Tim Stauffer and basically every other psychotically awful middle reliever or 5th starter we’ve seen in the last two years.
