Smells Like Padres in Here - Monday Edition
I don't think anyone can argue with us now. We are the worst team in baseball. Three straight days we had the lead and three straight days we remembered we were the Padres and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
This thing about people being upset with Baek's homerun trot is ridiculous. The guy had barely ever been on base, much less hit a homerun. He wasn't showing anyone up - he just had no idea what to do.
The trainwreck moves on to Cincinnati. Josh Banks takes on Homer Bailey. It can only get worse. "Game" time is 4:10pm PDT.
(And, yeah, this SLPiH is short. A little hard to find stuff on your team when no one writes about them because they are so bad. When we hit 100 losses, I expect to be inundated with national stories.)

beer somewhere?
I’m on my way to chicago for my east coast baseball park tour… 10 parks and Coopers Town in 12 days, whoo-hoo!
Anyway, I shall be at the padre game in cincin on Wednesday… I vaguely remember someone else from here going to be there too? Beer somewhere… ?

I'll be at tonight's game
Though it will probably rain out, the way my luck’s been going. I think Wonko will be at Wednesday’s game, though.

When Luke threw the ball
into RF yesterday I burst out laughing. Then, when Aaron fu**ing Miles goes yard, I completely lost it and almost ran my car off the road. It’s tragically funny at this point how completely awful our team is.

agreed
the aaron miles thing was a hoot. my friends and i were openly arguing about how we would lose, and of the 5 of us in the room, not ONE person guessed walk off grand slam
for the record, my choice was botched double play allowing the run to score.

I was thinking that too
After issuing the walks to set up a DP and a force at any base,
I imagined them screwing up a force at home, or a botched DP

yeah it was that
or Pujols barreling home and decapitating Carlin in a collision at the plate. Carlin holds on to the ball, but the runner from second scores on the ensuing horror of yet another Padres injury at the hands of Pujols.
The Cardinals bench would be laughing, of course…

I would've guessed a slow grounder to Edgar
who picks it up, looks to second, looks to first, then watches the winning run cross the plate.

This is just for WG
WG’s favorite writer, Ken Rosenthal, has a few trade tidbits for us today.
On Maddux:
The Padres plan to ask right-hander Greg Maddux to reconsider his preference to be traded to a West Coast team only. But Maddux, who has complete no-trade protection, is unlikely to budge.Maddux’s agent, Scott Boras, says the pitcher’s desire to stay on the West Coast is “entirely related to his family.” Maddux, who is married with two children — Amanda, 14, and Chase, 11 — makes his permanent home in Las Vegas.
The Dodgers, then, loom as the only realistic possibility for Maddux, who has spent his entire career in the National League. The Padres, operating without leverage, would be at a disadvantage in trade discussions.
On The Wolf, Cla, Kouz and Giles:
Randy Wolf, a left-handed starter, and Cla Meredith, a right-handed reliever, are the two Padres drawing the most trade interest. Wolf’s limited no-trade clause is not an issue; he can be sent to virtually all of the teams that want him without restriction. The Padres also would consider trading third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, but only if they received a young outfielder in return. The team remains unlikely to trade right fielder Brian Giles …

Controlling the strike zone
Geoff over at Ducksnorts has a good analysis on how the Padres have (not) controlled the strike zone. Here’s an interesting tidbit that makes the future seem brighter less bleak:
With the exception of the Dominican Summer League (and of course, the big club), every team in the Padres organization leads its league in walks drawn per game.
And, by the way, how about that 2001 club???

If Baek hits another homer and skips around the bases
then we’ll know he’s light in the spikes – until then, he has pitched well in a lot of outings and I’ve still never heard of the guy.

The Reds are going to kick our ass.
The split a 4-game series with the red-hot Mets this past weekend…and in both losses they had a lead and really could have pulled out a sweep. Those guys are fighting and playing hard. If we win one out of three I’ll be shocked.

Dusty Baker vs. Bud Black
This will be AWESOME!!! I am predicting Giles making a throwing error while playing short in the 13th inning with the bases loaded, no outs on Adam Dunn’s sacrifice attempt. Luckily the run will not count as Dunn, who never bunted before, is called out for making contact with the ball outside of the batterboxs. Then on the next play, the reds try a triple steal and Kouz (who has been pitching since the 8th), will get out of the inning. Of course Cla Hensley will pinch hit for Adrian in the 14th so Bud can get his left vs right matchup…..

if you count the All-Star game he’s had a plate appearance with the bases loaded 3 times in the last 5 games. Each time he has failed to score a runner right?
I think he only had two hits in STL.
