Open Thread: 7/2, Padres vs. Rockies

San Diego Padres @ Colorado Rockies

Coors_medium

Dex and Jon are at Coors Field.  They said that there are two statues out front.  One is of a generic baseball player and one is a little kid looking up towards the ballpark offices that is entitled "High Hopes".  I guess the Rockies haven't really been around long enough to merit a player getting his own statue so you just have to have a generic player.  Look how long it took the Padres to get a statue.

The guys are sitting in pretty good seats down the third baseline.  Dex has a connection with the Twins club that hooked them up with VIP tickets at will call.  He went up there and the guy was like "This is VIP will call only" and Dex was like "yeah I know".  Then he's like "We don't have Padres tickets here."  Then he said "Who gave you these?"  Dex just asked "Could you just check to see if there are tickets under my name please?"  The guy was "Oh here they are, imagine that".

I suggested that they each have a Coors beer and eat some Rocky Mountain Oysters.  They sounded excited by the menu options.

So far they think the ballpark is nicer than New Busch and very pleasant by all accounts.

Jon's wearing his Chris Gwynn Jersey and his Gaslamp Ball Shirt.  Both guys are wearing Padres hats, so if you are out there say hello.

Go Padres!

Having never been there

I can only imagine it’s like what I’ve heard on Coors commercials. Everyone talking in a rough, grizzled voice, “Gimme a Banquet.”

Also, are there any alpaca and does the Sherpa speak English well?

It's a great park

Friendly people, good food and they should have great weather.

just do it

amazing…. I walked around a lot and sat in four different areas to check the views. I especially liked the top deck between home and first, nice view of the mountains behind the scoreboard. Also, check out the standing areas behind the bullpens (near the rockpile)

That’s right, going to Buffalo. I know you’re all jealous.

Those standing areas are so great

And as long as you aren’t hassling the players, the ushers will let you hang out.

I agree

nope, I just watched yorvit Torrealba do some weird exercises (he had the night off) and then a few of their relievers warm up. Even watched Jose Vizcaino end the game while chatting with the centerfield camera operators.

Very nice park

Totally worth staying for an extra day. The downtown area around the park is really nice now, too.

I saw my first (and only) game there a few weeks ago, on June 10th. Amazingly beautiful ballpark, probably the nicest of the 14 active parks I’ve been to.

Fun fact of the Day

From www.Sportsbook.com:

SAN DIEGO (33 – 52) at COLORADO (33 – 51) – 9:05 PM
RANDY WOLF (L) vs. UBALDO JIMENEZ (R)
Top Trends for this game.
SAN DIEGO is 33-51 (-21.3 Units) against the money line in all games this season.

What that means is if you had bet $100 against the Padres in every game they have played, you would be $2,130 richer right now.

Save the economy…tell your friends to bet against the Padres!

by I8EtoDunbar on Jul 2, 2008 6:21 PM PDT   0 recs

They are like the anti-2006 Chargers

Where if you bet on them to cover every game you would have ridiculous dough.

2 dudes that hang out in RF along the walkway.

Ish is a cool dude that likes to pimp the signs and get on TV and or the Jumbotron.

Luigi is the midget-like dude that cause some havoc. Rocked the Bosox gear last year, had to wear a wig and a dress to a game as penance.

Both consistent, die-hard Padre fans. Except for Luigi, it appeas, on occassion.
