Open Thread: 7/18, Friars vs. Redbirds
San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals, Jul 18, 2008 5:15 PM PDT
I really hope Maddux wins tonight. I know it's fun to root for the Padres to lose, but I just feel terrible for Maddux. He's started twelve games now without a win. When was his last win? May 10th. Let that sink in for a minute.
The 42-year-old, who has five losses, seven no-decisions and a 4.11 earned run average during that rough patch, has often been victimized by San Diego's sluggish offense, as the Padres have scored three runs or less eight times during his winless span.
Go Padres!! Go Maddux!

I like that lineup better than most I've seen this year
Minus the 8 hole
"We will never be the darlings of the chabliss and brie crowd who disdain us."
Damn
I just realized that all we have to do is go 25-41 the rest of the way to reach our goal.
Should be easy enough… from pretenders to contenders… It’s gonna be Christmas in September for WG!
"We will never be the darlings of the chabliss and brie crowd who disdain us."
2 singles to start the game. Wow.
"We will never be the darlings of the chabliss and brie crowd who disdain us."
bah
we suck
You know I could go for a sandwich, but uh, I'm not gonna open two jars. I can't be opening and closing all kinds of jars.

No
But I wish that I had
"We will never be the darlings of the chabliss and brie crowd who disdain us."
That is really funny
Is that a Homer Simpson quote? I read it on the Padres page at Baseball Fever and cant stop laughing
I havent laughed this hard
since PMac thought Monument Park was a hot dog stand
you see that budweiser "american lager" ad?
that’s InBev trying to convince you that cardinal red hasn’t actually turned into communist red.
this game is performing well below my expectations
i fully expected the cardinals to have a 4 run lead by now.
they want to pace themselves
You know I could go for a sandwich, but uh, I'm not gonna open two jars. I can't be opening and closing all kinds of jars.
First Inning Story
Padres: 2 men on, 0 outs = 0 runs
Cards: 0 men on, 2 outs = 2 runs
"He had decided to live forever or die in the attempt"
Jammed
Why is it that our power hitters are always getting Jammed. Especially GIles, he is always getting jammed and popping the ball up.
alright Khalil!
waaaaay overdue
You know I could go for a sandwich, but uh, I'm not gonna open two jars. I can't be opening and closing all kinds of jars.
vasgersian talking about the bunt criticism
Didn’t Matt and Mud make the very same criticisms last night?
And that homer was Khalil trying to explain why he shouldn’t be pinch hit for with minor leaguers.
Look at you!
Enjoying channel 4 broadcast during an away game. You are no longer in the MLB.tv club. Congratulations.
it's so weird
seeing the guys so much more clearly on television as opposed to computer screen and in real time… It makes the pain of losing that much more distinct.
what is this????
driving in runs….?
You know I could go for a sandwich, but uh, I'm not gonna open two jars. I can't be opening and closing all kinds of jars.

No way, these are stored up runs from this season
We’ve been conserving them and depositing them in IndyMac. Now there’s a run on the bank!
Matty...no

F you Maddux
You don’t deserve a trade now. This is your team.
can you cure us of this fate
mock the litany in its face
On the plus side...
This DEFINITELY isn’t one of those “Greg Maddux Hard Luck Losses.” I love you Greg, but they got you 6 runs.
Wait a minute…..is this payback? Sneaky, Maddux. Sneaky.
khalils swing was so pathetic
that milk came out of my nose i was laughing so hard…
would be much less weird if i was drinking milk right now…

I'd just like anyone at mlb.tv or Cox Cable or the Padre front office
to please understand: I will gladly pay twice what mlb.tv costs now if I can listen to my hometown announcers instead of having to suffer through every person the Cardinals, D-Backs, Giants, Rockies or whoever else has decided to employ. Thank you. I realize this has something to do with the vagaries of the Cox contract. Cox: Please take my money. I’ll bring bags of it IF I DON’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS JUST TO WATCH MY PADRES.
Vin Scully, you are exempted. It’s not even that these Cardinals announcers are that bad….They’re probably fine. I just hate them because they’re Cardinals announcers.

Miles?!?!
so that’s the guy we’re lifting Thatch for?
i think Bud Black is actually clinically retarded.
i’m going to start calling him Corky and just be done with it….
www.wellbelowthemendozaline.blogspot.com
Why are we tied?
We should be down by at least five at this point.
Maddux can’t win, right? Just wanna make sure we screw him one more time.

I liked this Rick Ankiel better
Greg Maddux walked; Rafael Furcal popped to Will Clark in foul territory; Ankiel threw a wild pitch (Maddux to second); Ankiel threw a wild pitch (Maddux to third); Andruw Jones walked; Ankiel threw a wild pitch (A. Jones to 2nd); Chipper Jones was called out on strikes; Andrés Galarraga walked (Maddux scores, A. Jones to 3rd on wild pitch); Brian Jordan singled to Ray Lankford (A. Jones scored, Galarraga to 2nd); Ankiel threw a wild pitch (Galarraga to 3rd, Jordan to 2nd); Reggie Sanders walked; Walt Weiss singled to Lankford (Galarraga scored, Jordan scored, Sanders to 2nd); Mike James replaced Ankiel; Javy López popped to Fernando Viña; 4 R, 2 H, 0 E, 2 LOB. Braves 4, Cardinals 6.[2]
I wonder if LaRussa can even look him in the face

I'm not sure LaRussa spends much time seeing straight
if you catch my drift….

You're right. I don't know what I was thinking.
I think it’s still possible some of the games the Padres have already won, they’ll manage to go back and lose.
What was that
I thought if somone stole 2nd they were automatically safe????? Oh wait, thats if they steal on us. My bad!
Feels like a 23 inning game
I am so used to 2 hr games that we lose 2-0. This game is lasting forever.
and here... let's waste a ball
pitch out is terrific right there just to give the cards a little more of an advantage.
That was a little surprising, no?
I mean, not if you’ve watched Bud all yr long. But still…
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions
surprising part
It’s almost like he’s thinking strategy or trying to outthink the other manager, but then we know it’s bud black, so obviously that can’t be the case, in which case, i just don’t know what it was.
Very weird decsion
particularly because Bell has been a little wild.
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions
I guess this isn't really Bud's fault
When you’re a 100% bad team, you’re gonna be bad no matter what other factors you throw in there.
It's kind of bummer, really
Because I really wanted to rip Bud for bringing in Trevor in a tie game next inning. So I’m disappointed, but in a different kind of way.
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:15 PM PDT reply actions
whoa Rodriguez?
did Khalil get benched in a close game??
comical…
www.wellbelowthemendozaline.blogspot.com
Isn't it funny...
....when you hear the opposing announcers scoreboard watching? Talking about the teams that are just ahead of them in the standings…or just below them…and whether or not they have won or lost tonight?
I really wish Matty V and Mud would talk about what the Nationals and Mariners did tonight in the race for the Strasburg. That would be so awesome.
Bell threw 40 pitches?
That should bode well for the next few games.
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:18 PM PDT reply actions
I'd just like to point out that LaRussa is a drunk and Ankiel is a steroid user
And Pujols broke Chris Young’s face and Josh Bard’s leg and then laughed about it in the dugout. And Troy Glaus was in the Mitchell Report. And Skip Schumacher touches little kids and was on Dateline NBC and….
Wait…why am I even bothering to hate the other team? THE PADRES ARE FUCKING TERRIBLE.
Quick Poll
Hypothetical here…let’s say we lose all 11 games on this road trip. Would they fire Bud?
Yes or No?
They aren't firing him
If they were gonna make a move, the break was the perfect time because they’ve all but admitted the season is over.
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Damn...that sounds good.
They just opened up a new Sonic like a mile away from us. It’s right across the street from the high school. Can’t wait for September.

i'd rather hear gunshots from my child's bedroom
than hear this song again

You mean All-Star Manager Bud Black?
How could you let HIM go?
They should fire him at 3 a.m. like the Mets did to Randolph. Classy.
Yeah
but wait until they get to a crappier city. Cincy or Pittsburgh, maybe. That way it’s a longer flight home, too.
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Wait until the Mets series
After the game, KT hits him with a shovel and they bury him in left field of the new stadium the Mets are building.
The way the season is going
KT would miss and hit Adrian instead.
by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 18, 2008 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Adrian doesn't have to dig
Everyone else, grab a shovel. Twenty five of you are going on a road trip. Ten of you ain’t comin’ back.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I suffer with you...
I’ve never seen such stupid baseball playing in my life.”
Oh, Ray Kroc. The more things change….
St. Louis announcers: "This ball club finds ways to win"
Yeah. For example, they have the San Diego Padres on their schedule. Way to grind it out.
Exactly, and that's with minimal effort
Wait until they quit altogether. Then they’ll really achieve something.
I'm glad they had the all star break
to get their heads together and focus on more suckier.
Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand.

Well, for Dallas I can.
But Austin is more Astros…so I would think an NL Central team would make more sense. Apparently not.
Steve Quis quote to start the Postgame Show
After this game, I will use a quote from “Animal House”, ‘My advice to you, Padre fans, is to start drinking heavily.’
I couldnt help it, I laughed so hard I wet myself. And I promised myself I would do my best to uphold my part of that quote.
