Smells Like Padres in Here - Thursday Edition

The second half of the season begins today and we are allegedly looking to turn things around.  I don't buy it.  I think we are attempting to keep things going in the same direction.  Down, down, down...

Here's the mid-season report card.

CY had an encouraging night last night.

I don't know if this kid is any good, but I just wanna see his name in the lineup some day.

Are the Padres leaving Fort Wayne?  I hope not because...actually I don't care.  (Just kidding, Fort Wayne readers.)

The Pads are in St. Louis to start the second half.  Jake will be taking on Kyle Lohse.  Since Jake is pitching, we'll probably win and then everyone will be all "We can do this.  We can get back in the race."  And then we'll lose like seven in a row.  17 of the next 23 games are on the road.  Can't wait.  The fun starts at 5:15pm PDT.

Chris Jenkins...

Funny how Jenkins didn’t mention the fact that a 25-year old, Single A ball DH/OF with a grand total of 18 stolen bases in 329 career minor league games swiped a bag off of our starting catcher and #2 starting pitcher.

It is pretty funny, huh?

Anyone could steal a base on those guys. George Steinbrenner could somersault all the way from 1st to 2nd base and beat the throw. The runner could go on a week long cruise to Puerto Vallarta and the throw still wouldn’t get there until August. SAFE!

I'm sorry

This description makes me think of this:

How completely awful

does this road trip seem like it will be? Our road record is 14-28. This does not bode well.

If we handle it correctly

It could pave the way to 100 losses.

You're 100% right...

This is the trip that positions us in the Strasburg. Eleven games in eleven days against the Cards, Reds and Pirates. (Followed by three home games against the D-Backs with no day off in between.) With the added stress of the trade deadline looming…this could launch the second half just the way we need it.

This is going to make it really hard

When I go see them in Cincy on the 21st. Do I cheer for a loss or a win? Maybe i should get Strasburg put on my Jersey.

Losses are wins.

I'm gonna cheer

for beating the other team, but also count losses as wins.

Cheer for both

Just keep cheering no matter what happens… Wear a Padres cap and a Cincinnati jersey!

That is the worst.

Does it drive anyone else a bit crazy when you see the ballpark guy or gal with the jersey of one team and the hat of another?

It can be funny too

A work acquaintance of mine wore his Yankee shirt to a Dodgers/Padres game when free Dodger caps were being given away. He wore the Dodger hat with the Yankee shirt around Chavez Latrine and the looks he was getting were priceless

Dojir fan was seriously confused….

Beamer Weems

Just the thought of hearing Jerry Coleman slaughter this kid’s name in all manner of NC-17 ways has me giggling like a school girl

Leaving Fort Wayne

The padres can’t leave Fort Wayne, because I am still waiting for them to come play another exhibition game there. Of course, they haven’t been there since 1999, but, I’m still hoping.

Khalil to the Cubs? Not happening.

The Cubs have no interest in Khalil.

Two weeks from today is the non-waiver trading deadline. I expect GM Jim Hendry to inquire about another arm for the bullpen and maybe an extra bat. Hendry no doubt will inquire about Colorado lefty Brian Fuentes for the pen. One trade that is not happening is one for the Padres’ Khalil Greene. My Cubs people emphatically tell me they are not interested in Greene, a shortstop who was cited in a couple of reports over the past few days. Ryan Theriot is performing just fine at short for the Cubs, with an OBP of .396, which has him sixth in the NL.

The internet is funny

Didn’t the guy that originally report the Khalil to Cubs rumor take it down the same day? And it proliferated itself around the internet. It’s crazy how trade rumors that make no sense can go semi-viral.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

Da Season

Man, it feels like the bad old days….when are these guys going to pull things together? As a season ticket holder I have to say that the last home game was a joke. It really looked as if the Padres did not care and (like some of the Twins said earlier) were just going through the motions. Bad ball I can understand, but bad attitude? I have a couple of questions to all the other disappointed fans. Who is the leader of this team? When are the boys going to stand-up and find an identity? Right now I feel ripped off and wish that the whole(hole?) concept of money ball would just go away. RAK we miss ya, at least you had the guts to say that its the worst ball you have ever seen and you were sorry. Not the line that Giles laid on us about the fans not mattering. It may be a mis-quote but I believe he thinks just that way. Perhaps, this is just frustration, but if I were given the gift that these guys have I’d try and play each game to the fullest
