Furthermore, at this stage we're just not terribly interested in trading him.

Brian is the type of player we want our young position players to emulate. It's one thing for us or our coaches to try to explain our philosophy, but it's quite another, and much more powerful, to have a working example. I don't think I can emphasize this enough, especially considering the number of young position players currently on the team and expected to be on the team going forward.

Brian Giles
Should only be traded if the Padres can’t resign him in 2009. As Paul says, he is basically the second best hitter on a team and considering the inability for this team to find .300 hitters, I’m not sure what sense it would make to get rid of the one we have. Plus, at this point he plays that short porch right field as well as anyone and he knows the nooks (knooks?) and crannies of it.

You mean 2010 right?
He has an option year for 2009 worth $9 million and a $3 million buyout if they decline the option.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
Propaganda
So I guess we should read this as “We want a lot of good young players in exchange for Giles.”
Also, I’d love to know what their plan is to be competitive next. DePo mentions that they can’t rule out the 2009 season yet. But keeping Giles, rolling out the mostly the same guys and hoping Headley and Hundley develop can’t possibly be the plan right? So, I’d love to know who they think they can get in trades (free agency is not the answer) to make next year’s team win 20+ more games than this year’s team. Too bad no one can answer that for me.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
GIles is one of the few bright spots on the team this year.
I can’t speak to what the plan for ‘09 is, but keeping Giles should be a part of it. We’re not signing/shouldn’t sign any of the names below to replace him:
Bobby Abreu (35)
Casey Blake (35)
Milton Bradley (31)
Cliff Floyd (36) – $2.75MM club option for ‘09 with a $0.25MM buyout
Brian Giles (38) – $9MM club option for ‘09 with a $3MM buyout
Ken Griffey Jr. (39) – $16.5MM club option for ‘09 with a $4MM buyout
Vladimir Guerrero (33) – $15MM club option for ‘09 with a $3MM buyout
Jacque Jones (34)
Bobby Kielty (32)
Brad Wilkerson (32)
Not Brian Giles?

I agree
that keeping Brian Giles would be the best RF option for a competitive 2009 Padres team, but that alone isn’t enough, and there are so many issues that they have to address. So unless they have an idea of how to address all of them, then they have to think we won’t be competitive. And if we are not going to be competitive, then prospects are better than an aging Giles. And if they do have ideas on how to address all of them, then I have no idea what they could be, and I would love to know what they are.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
Innuendo
1st paragraph: you know my #, get @ me
2nd paragraph: Peavy 4 all prospects lol
3rd paragraph: NL West, go make a bunch of stupid trades cuz we’re gonna do something secret.
Paragraphs 4-6: Brian Giles is all like kackow.
Paragraph 7: We want stem-cell research and/or cloning done on Gillies.
