Smells Like Padres in Here - Monday Edition

And the first half of the season ends in an appropriate way - we get blown out.

A statistical look at the first half.

Will Venable is getting some attention up in Portland.

The Dodgers end a tradition.

Here's a breakdown of CY before his face got busted up.

The Homerun Derby is tonight, the game is tomorrow.  I'll be interested to see how AG does, but other than that, I don't much care.

SLPiH will be on hiatus until the quest for 100 losses begins anew later in the week.

It's high time

for a break. Miserable first half. Not much to be excited about moving forward.

Not much to be excited about?
In his first bullpen session since he had reconstructive elbow surgery, Matt Bush threw “very, very well” Friday, Fuson said.

by Dalton on Jul 14, 2008 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is exciting

at least. It’s just been a tough first half. I was at yesterday’s game and I just couldn’t get excited. When Wolf hit Blanco on that 1-2 pitch, I just knew it was all downhill from there.

It’s also been an inordinately tough season as the resident iLOVEkg3 guy on the boards. He’s had an awful, miserable season. Kinda soul crushing.

by Phantom on Jul 14, 2008 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I said this yesterday in the Open Thread as well...

But that pitch that Wolf hit Blanco with was seriously like 50mph and Blanco pulled the twist-my-body-but-not-really-try-to-get-out-of-the-way-bullshit….and the home plate ump gave him first base. Umpires need to stop being so accomodating to guys who make no effort to get out of the way of a pitch before they just hand a guy first base. As slow as that pitch was…Blanco could have easily gotten out of the way of that ball. He had a 1-2 count against him and was smart enough to take the hit.

That is exciting

I know this feels like grasping at straws, but if his elbow holds up, he’s going to rocket thru the minors.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 14, 2008 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mildly encouraging

Having read about the recovery process of Tommy John surgery, I know that there a lot of baby steps along the way to recovery. This statement doesn’t say if he threw at full strength, on flat ground, on a mound, in a simulated game, etc. To throw “very, very well” you should have to meet or exceed expectations and we don’t know what the expectations were. I can’t remember exactly when he had the surgery, but I think this would be about the time when he might start throwing again for the first time, which means that if you watched him throw and didn’t know he’d had TJ surgery, you probably wouldn’t have the same reaction as Grady. But, hey, it’s progress, just trying throw a little real out there.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

And I think I speak for all of us when I say....

...we’ve had enough “real” thrown “out there”.

Go Matt Bush! I heard he hit 99 mph on the gun! He’ll be closing for us in 2009!! Hooray Padres!!!

Won't take him that long

If his arm holds together, it’ll be fast.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 14, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In 2012 he'll be 26

Not exactly an old man. I could see him doing 2 levels in 1 year, but 3 levels is more than I have ever seen a future Padre do. So maybe 2011.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

by Wonko on Jul 14, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

2011 would be where I'd put him

All I can tell you is that when I sat with that scout and watched him pitch last summer, the scout (not a Padres scout) was pretty adamant that his ascent thru the minors would be fast.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 14, 2008 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I read somewhere

That fast ascents can be detrimental to a player’s progress because of a lack of relationships the player builds. When they get to majors they feel like they are out there on their own. If I try to picture myself as Matt Bush, in that clubhouse, in my hometown, with all the media that’s been created, and not having any buddies on that team. That sounds like a lot of pressure. It may be important for him to develop as a closer slowly and getting a team mentality by sticking with a farm team for a full season. I don’t know, it’s kind of a tough situation he and the Padres are in. It seems like they should err on the side of caution if possible.

I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

KT

KT was on with Scott & BR this morning…no link yet. Here’s a breakdown:

~ KT, his wife and their two dogs are currently in a 32-foot RV driving from San Diego to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

~ KT plans on working the phones over the break.

~ He thinks fans should get to vote for who gets to compete in the Home Run Derby.

~ There “could be moves” made over the break.

~ The Padres are being extra cautious with first round pick Dykstra after dealing with so many injuries with other draft picks the last 4 years. It’s “conceivable” they will end up not signing him. The decision will be made one way or the other “soon”.

~ Despite The Wolf’s recent struggles…he thinks the market for him will still be pretty good because he’s a lefty, he’s a competitor and pitching depth is rare.

One of many sad facts from Bill Center's article this morning.
“Over the first 95 games, the Padres were held to two or fewer runs 40 times. They were 6-34 in those games; four of those wins came in a span of four days.”

Couple more....

“47—Homers allowed by the Padres at Petco Park this season, compared with 45 all of last year, which was the lowest total in the NL.”

“Khalil Greene: Has gone 20 straight at-bats without a hit and 1-for-28 as his average has dropped to .216.”

Both of those stats are beyond horrible.

Terry Francona

Francona considered starting Mariano Rivera. Can you even imagine the shit-storm that would have caused?

by Drama on Jul 14, 2008 9:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Francona talked about that on PTI

He made it very clear that he wasn’t really considering it. It sounded like the Yankees maybe asked him to consider doing it and he knew it was the wrong thing and he wouldn’t do it in a million yrs, but he didn’t want to flat out say no because of all the crap that would’ve accompanied a blatant rejection of the idea.

Cool article

This is a really good article from Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal about the path that different people took on their way to running a professional sports franchise. Sandy Alderson is discussed, among others.

Statistical analysis

our winning percentage is .06 too high to get to 100 losses! if we’re going to win the Strasburg, we’ve got to cut some talent, and soon. When CY gets back we might struggle to lose as much. The boys have got to come out after the break like they want this. Let the fire sale begin! Bring back Mac and Huber.

7. Dave Magadan, Red Sox hitting coach. If Kevin Youkilis is any indication, Magadan’s one of the better hitting coaches in baseball.

Cubs recently inquired about Khalil

Tom Krasovic reports that the Cubs called about Khalil recently.

Padres shortstop Khalil Greene recently attracted an inquiry from the Chicago Cubs, but because Greene’s trade value has dropped so far, the Padres will hold onto him, according to a club official.

Ago a no go in HR Derby

I think I read on here a couple weeks ago he wanted to participate, but wasn’t going to push it (while e go’s wife has his balls in a jar under the sink, when is the next time yur bro will be an all-star in Yankee Stadium?) My money is on Utley. His short swing and that porch should help him out. What say you?

The eight players who will participate in Monday’s Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium (8 p.m. ET, ESPN):

  • 1. Lance Berkman, Astros
  • 2. Ryan Braun, Brewers
  • 3. Josh Hamilton, Rangers
  • 4. Evan Longoria, Rays
  • 5. Justin Morneau, Twins
  • 6. Grady Sizemore, Indians
  • 7. Dan Uggla, Marlins
  • 8. Chase Utley, Phillies

I’m so glad half the season is already gone…..it’s been a long arduous journey. CHANGE IN THE SECOND HALF!!!!

That list is pathetic

There are exactly 0 players who have ever won a single season HR crown. The highest finisher? Berkman finished 3rd in 2002. Pathetic.

Most of those guys are mashing this year.

Vlad’s not doing it, A-Rod’s not doing it…..Longoria got picked only for the Cinderella angle, but I don’t really have a problem with the rest.

I mean, it’s not like Varitek got picked for this, too.

by Dalton on Jul 14, 2008 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm just saying

There aren’t a lot of HR hitters there. There are some good hitters who happened to high first half of the season HR totals, but that doesn’t make them HR hitters. If you are Joe Schmo casual fan, why are you even tuning in? Who is it you want to see? Hamilton is about the only interesting name from that regard and I’m not even sure how well that story is known.

If they're not HR hitters, they're faking it pretty well this year.

You don’t think the fact that some of these guys (e.g., Chase Utley) hitting the crap out of the ball this year makes the Derby vaguely interesting? Should it just be Adam Dunn/Ryan Howard/etc. each year?

I don’t really care either way because I think the Derby is boring as crap….but I’m mildly intrigued by a couple of the names.

by Dalton on Jul 14, 2008 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm going to DVR it so I can fast forward through the crap.

If I remember correctly they went like 4 hours last season.

I’m really only tuning-in to watch Hamilton.
