Smells Like Padres in Here - Friday Edition
Hairston looks like the guy we saw at the end of last year.
Towers is going nowhere. (And make sure to read the little paragraph at the bottom - '98 reunion at tomorrow night's game. I'll bet Kevin Brown breaks something.)
I never thought I'd see the day when Adrian was compared to Klesko.
I am a sucker for stories like this.
The Dodgers may be about done with Ned Colletti.
Even though the season is over, the Padres will apparently play out the string. Jake takes on Jo-Jo Reyes and the Braves this evening. Game time is 7:05pm PDT. And I hope Kouz goes 0-5 and makes a couple of errors. I may be rooting for 100 losses, but "getting used to it" is unacceptable 5-5 and then wins the MLB MVP award several months early.

NO!!!!
Keep Colletti! He’s the best player on ouy payroll!
And seriously, who knew that Hairston owned Petco like that. Jebus.
Kevin Brown
I hope Brownie breaks a toilet.
They should have done the ‘98 reunion on the first weekend in August when the Giants were in town so Boch could be a part of it.
It’s sad that Cammy won’t be there.

I hope so.
They should at least have some sort of video tribute to him.
Sweep, or no sweep…1998 was so much damn fun. What an awesome season of baseball.
'98 Reunion
I agree with Drama’s sentiment that ‘98 reunion should have been done with Bochy and Flannery in attendance…Phil nevin actually said something that I agreed with when he mentioned this point and he also pointed out how we were “rubbing it in the face of the Braves” by holding this event when they were in town playing the Padres.
Yet one more reason to be miffed with the current FO

The only people missing from the reunion crowd:
(outside of Cammy)
Ruben Rivera, Chris Gomez and Dan Miceli. I can understand not bringing Rivera, but how is Gomez not there? Is he still playing somewhere? I absolutely HATED Gomez because he was mr. unspectacular but damn was he consistent. He was the anti-Khalil. By the end of the playoffs he had actually turned me into a fan because just about every night you could count on him for a hit or two, he always had high pitch counts and he made every routine play.
Glad to see Quilvio can walk. I bumped into him at the Fashion Valley mall once right after he retired with the Braves and he looked like he needed a walker.
damn, even I forgot one
Jim “The King” Leyritz. Another understandable omission, but certainly should be recognized in some way. He and Brown carried us to the series.

isn't he in prison?
we don’t need him boozin’ it up and killing anybody on the streets of san diego.
1998 was great
It seemed like that team always found a way to win. Maybe it was the infamous Cammy wiener picture, remember that?
This has got me thinking about 84, when the Pads clinched the WS berth and the delirious fans were cruising up and down El Cajon Blvd. for hours, drinking, carrying on, flashing boobies and what not. Those were good times.

T. Clark back to the D-Backs?
The D-Backs are interested in bringing Tony Clark back.
Struggling San Diego has made Tony Clark available, according to a report out of San Diego, and sources indicate the D-Backs could be interested in re-acquiring him in his dual role as pinch-hitter/clubhouse presence.
Pull the trigger
Honestly. Maybe we get another Scott Hairston-esque prospect languishing in their system. Give Myrow some playing time.
He's got the Maserati all picked out by now.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
Sure, and why not?
He’s already getting $900k for 100ish plate appearances so far. He’s supposed to be our power threat off the bench, and he has 1 HR (1 awesome HR). I’m sure AZ wants him more than anyone else, so let’s make it happen.
He hit only 3 PH HRs last year
So he is more or less on pace again.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
Fair enough
But he also had enough playing time to hit 17 total (which he isn’t getting here). And slug .511, as opposed to .314 (SSS alert, but that’s lower than Juan Pierre).
All three off Cy?

CY
Could make a minor league relief appearance during the break. That’s something, eh?
If he comes back strong, the Pads could be well on their way to winning 80% of the rest of their games.
I would like to see Hairston
at the beginning of the season, looking like he did at the end of last year… I’ve got one word for you Hairston. Venezuela.
"Yesterday was yesterday. Today is today.
There is no tomorrow. Make it today."
Look what the winter league did for Gerut.
He used to just be an average hetero player. Venezuela was his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
"Yesterday was yesterday. Today is today.
There is no tomorrow. Make it today."
All Hairston needs
is to learn to go the opposite way. He’s got everything else: Speed, defense, power, bat speed. If someone could just teach him to go up the middle and into right field, his BA would go up at least another 10 points, maybe more. He can still pull everything over the plate and inside which is what he’s best at doing, but if he can learn to go up the middle or opposite way on outside pitches, he could be a really good player.

Yeah
Just look at what trying to go the opposite way has done for Khalil this year.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
I don't know
what Khalil’s doing. But learning to go the opposite way makes you a more complete hitter. You can’t deny that if he could learn to do it right, Khalil would be a lot better than he was last year, which was his best year to date.
And you can’t deny that if Hairston could learn it, he’d get a lot better too.
by Zach (maestro876) on Jul 11, 2008 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions
I'm just saying
Khalil has been hitting the ball the opposite way more, trying to be a complete hitter as you say, but it’s hurting his overall hitting. I would assume that would be the same for Hairston.
If it were easy to learn to hit the opposite way then everyone would do it (unless they were lazy). Hairston has spent a lifetime getting good enough to do what he does against major league pitching. To think he could learn to hit another way when he is already at the end of his prime is pretty pipe-dreamy.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
*shrug*
You have a point. I dunno, I guess if it were me, no matter how old I was I would keep trying to get better and learn to do new things. Does this mean that Khalil just doesn’t have it in him to be anything but a dead pull hitter? And the same with Hairston?
by Zach (maestro876) on Jul 11, 2008 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm just saying
It’s possible that they don’t have it in them to combine their pull abilities with full field abilities. The age plays in because as your physical skills diminish you have to work hard to maintain ability, which doesn’t leave a lot of room for growing your abilities. There are plenty of hitters that never are able to learn full field hitter, and there is a decent subset of those that are still able to maintain good careers despite it. Hairston may be one of those guys that can work the pull for a long career (especially with his athletic abilities helping him along the way).
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.
I hope so.
I don’t know why, but I like Scotty a lot. Maybe it’s his flair for the dramatic HR late in the game, but I just want him to work out.

I'll bet you half the dudes in the clubhouse don't give a rat's ass
Kouz was just drunk and let it slip… A lot of guys collecting a check at this point …or playing the game for themselves, not as a team.
I BLAME HARRY!!!!
Is Harry capable of managing the game night after night? Probably. Can Harry teach the game of baseball to the players? He’s been around long enough, and I’m sure he has plenty of insight to share. Is Harry a leader? ...A leader commands his troops. I am sure the players respect listen to Harry, but does he have them prepared to give 110% every night? It sure the hell doesn’t appear that way…
Once again, you can’t put it all on Harry… but even with all of the freak accidents this year, we should have more then a paltry 36 wins.
Did I mention that I was upset with the 2008 Padres?
...and It ’s going to take more $1 hot dogs then Kobayashi could stuff down in a year to make it all better.

How many days can you kick the shiat out of yourself?
Every time, after every loss? It gets old, to the point where you just go numb. Doesn’t mean you enjoy it or want it to continue.
Kooz certainly isn’t one of the ones I would peg to make an “I don’t care”-type statement if I were to judge only based on on-field performance.

Yeah, you're right
It’s a lot easier kicking the snot out of yourself for 16 Sundays. 162 ass beatings could be pretty painful. I am going to remain positive and up beat for the rest of the season. I will save my passionate ranting and raving for the NFL.

I agree
He’s about the last one I’d think to make that kind of statement.
I’m sure he was just hammered. Doesn’t make me like it any better. Even if he was just trying to score…

Sounds like he was unsuccessful
Not surprising that the Padres can’t score off the field too.

This surprised me too, but none of us know what REALLY
was said, you just trust the person that posted that automatically? People make up stuff all the time, ask any celebrity with a story in the tabloid. But if it is true, he shouldn’t be hated on for being honest, he’s probably very frustrated. He’s been hitting consistently while most have not, he was the one stranded at third TWICE with less than two outs in that AZ game. Even your exaulted, treated-like-God Chase Headley couldn’t bat him in!

It's not that we all automatically trust it
It’s just that it makes sense. It’s the reality of the situation, applause to Kooz for keepin’ it real, if he indeed was keepin’ it real.
