The Official Un-Official "Firing of Bud Black" Gaslamp Ball Pool

This isn't your typical "When is the Manager Going to Get Fired?" pool. Picking some random date off the Padre schedule takes no real thought. So...I've put a little spin on it.

There have been three managers fired so far this season.

  • Mets

Fired: Manager Willie Randolph, Pitching Coach Rick Peterson and First Base Coach Tom Nieto

Promoted: Bench Coach Jerry Manuel

  • Mariners

Fired: Manager John McLaren

Promoted: Bench Coach Jim Riggleman

  • Blue Jays

Fired: Manager John Gibbons, First Base Coach Ernie Whitt, Third Base Coach Marty Pevey and Hitting Coach Gary Denbo

Promoted: Special Assistant to the President and CEO Cito Gaston

So, assuming Bud gets the boot during the season...here is the challenge to you GLBers:

When Harry gets his walking papers...who* gets fired along with him (if any, at all)? *Side rule, coaches cannot be fired before or after Buddy, like when the Mariners fired Batting Coach Jeff Pentland. We're only picking the guys that go on the same day as Bud.

Who takes the managers job? Will it be a coach on the staff that gets promoted? A coach or manager at the minor league level? Someone from the front office? Will they hire outside of the organization?

Additionally, please pick a date of when the changes will occur. In the event of a tie, we'll use this as our tiebreaker. Not using "Price is Right" rules, the GLBer closest to the date amongst the ties wins.

Winner gets a dream GLB package that includes: A signed lithograph of Axion & Wonko re-creating the famous Rocky-Apollo Creed portrait from the end of Rocky III, a copy of "Merry Catmas - Jonny Dub Sings his Holiday Favorites", a visit to jbox's Pad Squad Carrie Shrine room (ask nicely and he may even show you a lock of her hair!), a month's supply of overand Hot Dogs and finally, sdsuaztec4 will come to your office to yell and scream a list of names of your co-workers you believe should retire or be fired.

Bud & Colbert

get the axe on Bastille Day (July 14th) after we lose 4 of 6 at home to go into the ASB. 2 of those losses will result from Bud letting a starter start 1 more inning than he should. They should axe Glen Hoffman too, but won’t.

In a surprise move, the Padres hire Rickey Henderson as their new manager to fire up the team. The Padres learn how to run and stop the stolen base and still lose 100 games.

by Phantom on Jul 1, 2008 8:10 AM PDT   0 recs

Rickey?

You’re not getting that Jonny Dub CD.

I don’t think July 14th is possible…I don’t think you’re allowed to make moves like that during the All-Star break. Something about overshadowing the events or something. I could be wrong.

I don't really

think it will happen at all. The team is loathe to admit their mistakes.

by Phantom on Jul 1, 2008 8:24 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

That would be like announcing you are opting out of your enormous contract, right in the middle of the World Series. Very bad form.

Here's mine...

Fired: Manager Bud Black, Hitting Coach Wally Joyner, Third Base Coach Glenn Hoffman

Promoted: First Base Coach Rick Renteria

Firing Date: July 28th

by Drama on Jul 1, 2008 8:12 AM PDT   0 recs

Okay I'll Bite

If, and this is a big if, Bud Black gets fired this season: Wally Joiner goes and Glen Hoffman is promoted to manage the rest of the season; a permanent manager will be hired in the off-season. If this happens, when the new manager is hired(during the off-season) he will replace the bullpen coach, the bench coach, pitching coach and first base coach, but keep Hoffman as either bench coach or 3rd base coach.

To sum up: Black and Joiner go, Hoffman to interim coach for remainder of season. D-DAY will be July 27th.

oh and wrap your head around this

Maybe Larry Bowa gets hired in the off-season as manager. Or not.

Joyner

stupid auto correct

by I_Can_Still_Pitch on Jul 1, 2008 8:26 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

We need Buck Showalter!

I’m actually kind of sick of having pussy managers. I was listening to Leitner bitch about Pinella the other day, and the only thing I could think of was: “Well, Lou does have a pretty good track record.”

If we’re gonna be bad, we might as well have some entertainment from the dugout..

by Phantom on Jul 1, 2008 8:24 AM PDT   0 recs

You have inspired me sir

I used to call my wife’s assistant (don’t ask) the Bitch Wrangler, from this day forward she will be known as the Pussy Manager.

August 3rd/4th

It’ll happen after we lose to the Giants on Sunday afternoon, August 3rd. They might wait until Monday because it’s an off-day. Depends on when they leave for the series in NY.

(Though I’m starting to think that if they are willing to wait that long, then they may just let him ride out the season. Last night’s win really screwed things up for me because I was really thinking it would be this Thursday.)

I would’ve said Renteria as the interim replacement, but since that’s already been used, I’ll say they just put Colbert’s corpse in charge for the remainder fo the season.

Can we trade for Milty

and have him be a player/manager? That would kick ass.

by Phantom on Jul 1, 2008 8:33 AM PDT   0 recs

Awesome

And Shawn Chacon can be the pitching coach.

by I_Can_Still_Pitch on Jul 1, 2008 8:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Love it

P-Mac could be our third-base coach. Geoff Blum could be our hitting coach.

by Phantom on Jul 1, 2008 8:48 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he'll be here next year.

can you cure us of this fate
mock the litany in its face

by Axion on Jul 1, 2008 9:13 AM PDT   0 recs

Agreed

They will let his contract expire and find someone new that is almost exactly like him.

Michael Barrett for Retirement in '08. Bring back Piazza!

Also, I don't sign lithographs

I do nipple impressions, however.

Black for the rest of the season

Maddux retires and becomes manager for 2009

FIRE BUD BLACK! RETIRE HOFFMAN, GILES, AND MADDUX! TRADE HEADLEY, KOUZMANOFF, AND GREENE!

by sdsuaztec4 on Jul 1, 2008 12:01 PM PDT   0 recs

here goes

September 29th (day after the season ends)

Fired: Black, Colbert, Joyner

Hired: Don Mattingly (as either manager or hitting coach)
Tye Waller (manager, if Mattingly is not)

by obviousman on Jul 1, 2008 12:49 PM PDT   0 recs

Interesting....

Someone wants the big prize!

by Drama on Jul 1, 2008 1:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

My two bits

September 25th, the day the Padres hit triple-digits in the “L” column. No 100 losses, no new manager.

Buddy, Wally, Colbert are all gone

Hired: Randy Jones – manager
Mike Piazza – Hitting coach
One of those seated Ronald McDonald statues from the play place – Bench coach

by Boilermaker19 on Jul 1, 2008 1:35 PM PDT   0 recs

interesting guesses all

but I too think the Padres would rather keep losing than eat a contract a la Edmonds again this year.

is it silly to suggest that we might win the west this year with only fringe changes in the offseason (to the coaching staff, obviously there will be some player personnel moves)

names out there

if/when Buddy is replaced, and I hope it’s a few years away, I’d really like to see Buck Showalter in a Padres uniform. Everyteam he goes to builds for the future with a few years worth of cracks at the postseason. And that’s what it’s all about. Is that what it’s all about?

Interesting names:
Buck Showalter
Don Mattingly
Larry Bowa
Glenn Hoffman
Jerry Coleman (why not)
Willie Randolph

Good lord

Jerry Coleman would be hillarious/horrible.

1980 was a great year

by sdsuaztec4 on Jul 1, 2008 3:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I like Mattingly

Dude was a HITTER.

We could use someone with experience in putting bat to ball, especially with this current group…yikes

Showalter is a great choice as well
