Smells Like Padres in Here - Friday Edition
For awhile, it looked like we might beat the Twins yesterday. But in the end, things ended the way they always seem to for us.
"If the Home Team is destined to be bad, it might as well be bold."
'Tec posted this yesterday, but I'm re-posting because we all seem to forget the FanShots sometimes and this is worth a look.
Geoff Young has a nice piece comparing AG to Justin Morneau up at Hardball Times. HT also continues their breakdown of the first round of the draft and provides an in-depth analysis of Dykstra's swing. They don't mention the "secret injury" though.
Suckfest 2008 begins tonight as The Wolf takes on Jarrod Washburn. Lookout Landing is already trying to get in our heads by applauding our best player and plotting to get swept. Did I not warn you about this yesterday, that the Mariners would attempt to outsuck us??? We must not stand for it!!! P-Mac at short, Adrian in center and let Trevor start all three games. That's how we can assure that we are the ones getting swept and create the necessary momentum toward 100 losses. KILL THE HOPE. COMMIT TO SUCKING. Game time is 7:05pm PDT.

Lookout Landing
kind of frightens me. i just spent 15 minutes (that i’ll never get back) on that site, watching them call the padres “good,” whatever the hell that means…

I just found myself reading a Tim Sullivan article and agreeing with him.
Obviously, I have some serious drinking to do this weekend.

My only qualm
Is that articles like this are focusing on a particular situation (yesterday’s 6th inning) in an effort to form a bigger point (be bold!) for a team that doesn’t need a slight edge here and there. They need a big edge. They need hitting and they need a bullpen. So while I follow his point and nodded a bit like Drama, he’s kind of wasting his ink.
I also don’t agree that you should replace a guy who might strike out with a guy who might get out “better”. I want the guy who has the best chance of getting a hit. But he’s still right in that Carlin is probably not that guy.

Totally agree
The criticism felt half-hearted to me. If you’re going to criticize him, do it on a larger scale – otherwise, it seems kind of watered down. It was like he was afraid to come out and say “Bud Black has not done a good job all year.”

Reading between the lines
Looks like everyone’s favorite Craig Stansberry is being sent down since they are calling up LRod. This probably means more days off for Khalil since the organization considers LRod a real backup shortstop (unlike EGon’s rousing performance against the Giants).
Career line for LRod (I feel helpless with baseball-reference.com down this morning, I had to muddle through mlb.coms player search): .243/.311/.339
Stansberry: .333/.391/.381
Good choice FO.

LRod
was tearing the cover off the ball before he got hurt this year. Hopefully it keeps up.

That's a tall order.
Tons of bars with MLB packages, where you can request they put on the Pads game (if you don’t mind a quizzical look). As for wifi…probably only if you pick it up from a nearby apartment, which isn’t out of the question. (Although I tend to frequent places where you wouldn’t want to set electronics down on top of the bar.)

when i lived in boston
they would have the Red Sox on like 15 screens and REFUSE to play the pads game, even the few times that we were on espn.

As an FYI
If the Padres don’t sign Dykstra (although the article says they still will) they would get a replacement pick at the exact same spot in the 2009 draft’s first round as Dykstra was picked (23rd overall) in addition to their normal first round pick.

At least it's retro jersey night
I have my Visine all ready for the eye blaring shock to my ocular system. I love being blinded by Padres colors.
