Smells Like Padres in Here - Tuesday Edition
Winfield's Ghost is still "busy".
According to Sandy Alderson, the Padres "are neither buyers nor sellers at this point." So we're just stagnant? Not doing a damn thing you ask? No. "We are observers -- of our own team." It's comments like these that make me despise Sandy.
Remember Logan Forsythe? He's the third baseman out of the University of Arkansas that was taken by the Padres with the 46th pick in the 2008 draft. Yeah, remember him? He's having season-ending surgery today after sliding headfirst into first base in his THIRD game as a professional. Does MLB give the Wonderlic?
Tom Verducci from SI takes a look back at the Hall of Fame Game.
The Rockies figured we were having so much fun down in the basement...they decided to come down and join us.
The Twins are pretty good at this interleague thing.
Kevin Slowey takes on Jake tonight at Petco. First pitch is at 7:05pm.

A day off
and we still lose ground in the West. Awesome.
I got into an argument with my family the other night re: the buysers or sellers thing. i think that going 2 – 7 in our last 9 games has kinda pushed me into sell mode.
And I still believe in this team. I just think Interleague totally fu*ked us this year.

Logan Forsythe
I saw he was playing for Eugene and that one day he didn’t start. It was a little surprising to see him playing at all this year since I had heard that he was playing with an injury this year (and that’s why he dropped to the end of the first round). So, as dumb as it is sliding headfirst in a game that barely counts for anything, since I never thought he would play this season anyway my expectations are back to where they were when he was drafted. He’s also a 3B and we are in no rush for him to get through the minors quickly. Also, season-ending surgery for a player in Eugene is not nearly as bad as other leagues since Eugene only plays games for 3 months.

The worst part of Logan's injury -
he was sliding into FIRST BASE.

We need a different way to get players
other than drafting them. When we draft them, they become a lightning rod for injury.
I think Alderson’s comment is accurate, but wiseassish. Right up until going to NY we were playing decent baseball, making up ground, flirting with the ideas of buying, and then we lay about a half-dozen eggs and we’re right back into cellars. I think dude is frustrated by the flashes of a good team we saw two weeks ago. I am, too.

gotta keep up the optimism
like the old halftime speech: “come on guys, we’re only three touchdowns, a two point conversion, and a field goal away from making this a three possession game!”
i buy into it every time they win.

I heard...
Chase Headley wasn’t drafted. He rode up to spring training on a white unicorn with run fairies sprinkling him all along the way. When he first picked up a baseball bat 100 pitchers arms actually fell off simultaneously.

philly must be getting to me...
as far as the buy/sell thing…..if CY came back and had 2-3 good starts before the trade deadline, would anyone be opposed to trading him? i know he’s been good (and at times great), but i don’t know if i ever see him becoming nearly as good as peavy and i feel as though with our home park we can insert any decent pitcher and get 80% of the production. banks is a pretty good example of this.
if there are several things that padres fans are on the same page about, it’s that we need a great defensive center fielder at all times and speed would probably help us.
what about shane victorino? he came through our farm system so he’s familiar with a lot of people still with the team, he’s an excellent defensive center fielder with speed and in the last 3 years he’s batted .294 .287 and .281. phillies fans are calling for him to be traded for a number 2 pitcher and putting werth in center field.
if we picked him up Hairston could go back to being the 4th outfielder. once giles leaves, victorino can slide over to RF if needed (he played RF last year and has a cannon for an arm). this is a rare breed of the type of player padres fans have been asking for and the kindof guy the padres might actually bring in (they love those san diego ties). of course a lot is dependent on CY, but i would make this deal. anyone have any reasons why not?

one thing to add
i feel like the best arguments against this are that victorino plays in a hitters park and CY pitches in a pitchers park. here are the counter arguments
-victorino hits better on the road. every year. last year he batted over .300 on the road and about .260 at home. the hitters park hurts him if anything, which i think points to him being a gap hitter instead of somebody who can hit homeruns.
-CY is much, much better at home. mostly because he’s a fly-ball pitcher. but so was adam eaton, who the phillies signed for 3 years, 24 million. so i don’t think they shy away from these kinds of guys. at least they haven’t in the past couple of years.

I can't believe the Padres would do this
The market for a pitcher like CY was set when Dan Haren was traded. The Padres would need at least 3 major league ready prospects with no time on their service clock in return. Young is still relatively inexpensive and a very effective pitcher. I could see Victorino as a possible return, but he alone would not be enough to get a deal like this done. I have a cursory knowledge of the Phillies farm system and I don’t think there is enough ammo (no major league ready pitchers in AAA, no major league ready position players in AAA) to get Chris Young.

The vultures circle
a coyote laughs in the distance:
Teams around baseball are probably anxiously eyeing various Padres veterans, especially Brian Giles, Greg Maddux, and Randy Wolf. However, the front office remains undecided on whether to buy or sell at the trade deadline.Normally a .416 winning percentage about halfway through the season would be enough to call it quits. However, the NL West has only one team over .500 and the Padres are eight games out. It’s too early to wave the white flag, especially with 31 games remaining until the trade deadline.
Chris Young could come back strong and Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff might continue their upward trends. If the Padres are three or four games out in late July, Kevin Towers could look to add a hitter. -MLBTR

Too hard on the front office
I think you are too hard on Alderson. There is no front-office I would rather have leading the Padres. It’s as good of a “team” as you will find in baseball.
