Smells Like Padres in Here - Thursday Edition

Things I like:  rainbows, unicorns (the kind that aren't dead) and beating the LA Dodgers.

The umpires aren't all bad.

Josh Bard (remember him?) might be ready in a couple of weeks.

I know many of you miss Milton Bradley.  Just thought you should know he's still 'effing insane.  (Courtesy of a certain striking frog chaser.)

I love stadium profiles.  Any stadium.  It doesn't matter.

Jake returns today against Hiroki Kuroda.  As it's a day game and the U.S. Open starts today at Torrey, I expect 37 people to be in attendance.  DAY GAME ALERT!  Game time is 12:35pm PDT.

Today

is also 2 for 1 ticket day. Pretty good deal in several sections.

PNC rocks

Of all of the stadiums I’ve been to so far, PNC is probably my favorite (outside of PETCO, of course). The skyline is just ridiculous.

The weather, though, can suck in July.

Yea!!!

I’ll be there in July. But I guarantee the weather will suck in all the cities I go to (StL, Chi, Cin, Pit, Cle, Det, and Tor) in July. Fortunately Toronto is a dome. A SKY dome.

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

Also

the Padres have agreed to terms with their first two draft picks (including prying one guy away from a college committment) and are looking to spend a ton of cash in Latin America this year.

by Phantom on Jun 12, 2008 7:55 AM PDT reply actions

Latin America

is what has killed the Padres farm system in the past. They just rely on the American draft and don’t look at other talent rich areas.

Agreed

But I think they’re moving in the right direction these days. With the Dominican facility and this recent report, things are looking up. Here’s more corroboration from Baseball America:

The teams showing more interest in big-money international signings this year than in the recent past include the Reds, Athletics, Padres, Astros, Cardinals and Indians, with the Padres strongly linked to at least three players who could sign for seven-figure bonuses. In the weeks leading up to July 2, Baseball America will give subscribers more insight on some of the players expected to command the highest bonuses.

Plus

We have a couple decent Dominican prospects in Ft Wayne, Felix Carrasco (21) and Yefri Carvajel (19). Also one in Lake Elsinore, Rayner Contreras (21). So the cupboard isn’t bare, but it could be stocked some more.

Speaking of Contreras

does anybody know if he’s OK? He got drilled in the head on Friday by a fastball on like a 3-1 count. I was organizing our nightly run with the mascot promotion down the right field line and you could hear the echo of the ball hitting his helmet all throughout the stadium. He went down instantly and stayed down for about five minutes. I actually completely forgot about this until I just read your comment, so I have no idea if he’s OK.

just read that article

i dont care if he’s a raving lunatic, i still love this guy. and crazy or no crazy, you’d be a fool if you think he wouldn’t be an asset to this team.

i definitely agree with your comment though.

maybe reading the WWL Mag profile on Elijah Dukes made me a little more tolerant of Bradley’s insanity. i mean i’ll take a teammate pumping himself in to tears over a teammate roidraging himself to choke a fool any day of the week.

I feel really bad for the guy

I think he gets targetted unfairly (not saying he was in this situation) and I think it’s caused him to be hyper-sensitive to this kind of crap. You can’t tell me that Mike Winters would have pulled what he did with somone like Jody Gerut or Andruw Jones at first (just trying to come up with contemporary black players).

I really thought Milty tried to behave and be a model citizen while he was with us. A lot of the things he did were perceived to be worse (the infamous bat fling in Philly) than his original intent.

So yeah, I think he totally over-reacted in this situation. At the same time, it must be exhausting to constantly hear people bringing up the things you’ve done in the past. It’s sort of like being sentenced to prison in America. It’s almost impossible for someone to reintegrate with society because they are always reminded of the crimes they’ve committed in the past. People can repent and try to keep their lives on track all they want, but they’re never forgiven by society. It’s extremely difficult to rehabilitate with that kind of social climate.

I miss Milty!

Judging by his impact on our offense last year, we’d be a .500 team right now if we had re-signed the guy. the media is going to keep going after him no matter what he does because it grabs eyeballs. He has been nothing short of awesome for Texas this year, and all that jackass Lefebrve can do is say that Josh Hamilton (who is friggin’ incredible, by the way, why didn’t we trade for him?) is better because he crapped all over people in his past life, and now he’s not doing that anymore.

I like Milty, too

I think he went a long way to curtail his attitude while he was with the Padres and I really respect that.

But he needs to be mature enough to realize that the things people say about him are largely out of his control if he is being the best person he can be. Stuff like this only makes him a larger target and brings it all home. He has to have the presence of mind to think, somewhere around leaving the clubhouse, that, “Hey, I don’t think this is going to help my baseball career or my kid. If I am so concerned about what people say about me, what the hell am I doing right now?”

All that aside, he is a major league baseball player and guys with better attitudes and less talent would probably kill to be in his position.

Completely agree

that he should have the strength of will to resist this kind of thing. I just think it sucks that he keeps getting put in these situations and that people seek him out because they know it will get a response.

Like I believed last year, he should have had the will to ignore Winters. But there is no way in hell he should have to be put in that situation in the first place.

by Phantom on Jun 12, 2008 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think I was fair.

A rational person, when climbing 4 flights of stairs in anger, would probably have something click. I think the fact that Milton returned to the clubhouse, yelled at his teammates, and broke down in tears, reflects that he has some serious issues and I really hope he realizes that and seeks help.

Milton

I’m kinda with you, although I’m not sure I agree that he’ll have a meltdown. He’s like that good looking crazy person you dated and then hit a rough patch and they went with someone hotter. Sure you miss the good times a little (or a lot), but you gotta feel a little dissed that they left you instead of whining about how you should have held onto them. To conclude, he’s dead to me too.

Let's go Mets!

Santana has struck out all the DBags in the lineup except Ojeda and Hudson, but only once each. He’s very socialist that way. 83 pitches in 5 IP. They are going to need the bullpen and Wagner is one BS away from retirement.

by Wonko on Jun 12, 2008 11:39 AM PDT reply actions

Well, he's got Hudson now

But Conor Jackson has broken out of Santana’s socialist regime with a second. C’mon CoJack give that one to Ojeda so that my Santana-run Marxist dream will come true.
