Fox News reports Padres releasing Jim Edmonds
His agent, Paul Cohen, said that Edmonds, a 16-year veteran, wants to continue playing.
"Obviously it has been a real bad three weeks for him," Cohen told FOXSports.com. "He wishes he would have played better for the fans and the teams. But in the right situation, he's going to play."
Are the Surf Dawgs still around?
I guess it's best that they release Jim as opposed to letting Kevin Towers rip his throat out.
[Note by Dex, 05/09/08 4:11 PM EDT ] Geoff over at Ducksnorts :
Gerut is up, Edmonds is gone. LHP Sean Henn has been claimed off waivers from the Yankees and will join the club on Saturday. No word yet on whose spot he’ll take.

FYI, it would really suck for a player to find out he was being replaced on a roster if he, or one of his friends, read it on some blog before he had a chance to find out personally before arriving at the ballpark.
you won’t be wowed by anything, unfortunately. the only point was to state that more things are on the way (2 specifically), your FO is working hard on things.

By the way
I would venture to guess that a player usually knows long before the press release.
Case in point, KT said on his XX interview this afternoon that he had a phone conversation with Jim Edmonds this morning to let him know he was being released, and yet we didn’t hear about it officially until around 1pm.
So, I’m guessing that in Colt’s case, he probably knew before they landed back here in SD yesterday afternoon. Dude was staying in a hotel, not in his house in Orange County (like Edmonds), so he had to have some time to get his affairs all straightened out here before heading back to San Antone.

I wish the guy had been productive too
BUT, he wasn’t.
If he was, we might not (probably) have the worst record in all of MLB. And it’s not just about him not being productive at the plate. His defensive range was definitely way below average….recall the game up at AT&T park where the ball went off his glove giving the Giants a walk-off win.
I’ve never been a fan of his, and when the Padres acquired him in December, I cringed because I knew he was nowhere near the player he had once been. To me, he was always overrated defensively….back in his Angels days, he was on Sportscenter all the time for making diving catches, but if you watch the whole play, it was because he was getting a horrible jump on the ball. Difference is, back then, he had the speed to make up for it, and hence made the “great diving catches”.
Anyways….. not worth much more effort or thought from me. The dude’s gone and it’s time to move on.
Do I wish him well? Sure.
Am I glad he’s not a Padre anymore? Sure
Now we just gotta see what the future holds for this team….I agree that Gerut/Hairston are not the long term answer in CF. Time will tell what else will happen.

The talks
about putting Tony Gwynn Jr. in center seems appealing to me. I think he would be a great offensive and defensive asset to the team. And the son of Tony would be a great PR boon to the organization.
With him losing his starting job to Mike Cameron, maybe the Brewers would part with him.
by sacpadre on May 9, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i disagee
anthony just isn’t a starter, in my humble opinion. his last name is the most powerful thing he has going for him. if you want your team relying on PR gimmicks, well then, there you go. i’d rather them find better players. he would be a very nice 4th outfielder. i’d definitely take him over jody gerut or mcanulty. but if you think he’s a starting outfielder for a team that was supposed to contend, i’m afraid i disagree.
he didn’t lose a starting job, he only started because cameron was suspended. he has never once beaten anyone out for a starting job. he was a cheap 1 month stop gap, and ended up being injured for about half the time cameron was suspended with a bad hammy.

Well, it wasn’t unexpected for this to happen, too bad, because I think he wanted to help the team. I think he would have been a great bench guy to have to mentor younger ones if you could have a 26th bench guy. I think Hairston/Gerut platooning is great. Gerut does have two rebuilt knees after all and I think Scotty has done a good job in center.

Not sure about this move
Edmonds was awful, no doubt about it. But I can’t say i necessarily agree with the move right now, mostly because I don’t think we dumped the right guy.
My premise is that McAnulty is what we’ve seen and has reached his ceiling.
Why throw away 4.5 million dollars (yes, that matters), when you have other people you can dump. Edmonds, as horrid as he has been, at least has a track record of being better. And while there is a low probability that he’d step it up to be servicable, I think I’d rather keep running him out there until you call up Headley, and give up on McAnulty right now.
The spark this team needs is someone who can hit 10-15 home runs. McAnulty may have sniffed 10, but he is so awful in LF it was tough to watch. Gerut is NOT going to provide anything but a few singles and probably being a corner fielder stuck in center due to lack of other options.
I’m not defending Edmonds, but I’d rather not toss the 4.5 million away unless you have a better option. As the summer heats up, there was a chance Jimmy could have, I dunno, sipped out of the fountain of youth one last time.

I pretty much agree
With the Edmonds part. I disagree with the PMac part though. He isn’t hitting nearly as bad as Edmonds, and did provide value at the plate, even if he wasn’t a great left fielder.
by osbug on May 9, 2008 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Edmonds isn’t getting any younger or healthier. His ceiling was reached about 4 years and he’s never getting back to it. If P-Mac is potentially at his ceiling, I’d rather hang around to see if it goes any higher rather than stick with a guy who’s ceiling has come and gone.

that’s why i wrote that my premise is that mcanulty won’t improve ever. it’s a matter of opinion.
we just disagree. i think there’s a chance edmonds would have played better eventually. god, he couldn’t have been worse.
and while i generally agree that contracts should be thought of as spent money, i don’t agree with just tossing away the 4.5 unless you make a move that improves you, not a lateral one. we are not a better team today.
i don’t think you call a guy done after a month-ish, but thats a minor point. my major point is i think mcanulty is never ever ever going to be worthy of a starting OF spot, and he provides no potential improvement, compared to edmonds who provides a 5% chance (arbitrary).

Andruw Jones
can still play the field. Plus, at 32 years old, his chances of turning things around are much better than a banged up 38 year old Edmonds.
by strummer on May 9, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right
But for 18.1mil/year, I am sure you could find someone to play very good CF and not be such a liability with the bat. He has been declining at the plate for awhile now. He may be younger than Edmonds, but has played in almost as many career games as him. Maybe he peaked at a younger age, and maybe he is just as banged up as Edmonds. There is no way to justify paying him that much money just on his defense, especially considering he was hitting worse than Edmonds.

Jones by the numbers
Estimated numbers through 1.5 months of play, by someone who’s bad at numbers.
Andruw Jones has received:
$26,617.25 for each point of his batting average. (.170)
$1,131,250 for each of his four RBI.
$4,525,000 for his homerun.

Uh
Someone said Edmonds couldn’t be any worse, and I said he could, he could be Jones. You seemed to be saying that Jones at 18.1mil was somehow better than Edmonds at 6mil, and got called on it. How is that being in denial? Rather, what are we in denial about?
by osbug on May 9, 2008 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We are in last place
The Dodgers are in second place and playing great. Focusing on Andruw Jones is like someone from Bear Stearns ridiculing Enron. Focusing on another teams shortcomings doesnt improve your own team. It reeks of inferiority.
by strummer on May 9, 2008 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right. Way to avoid the question.
Nobody said anything about the Dodgers and the way they were playing except you. Again, someone said Edmonds couldn’t be worse (which nobody denied he was terrible), and it was pointed out that he could indeed be worse (implying that he was bad, but not the worst). You decided to defend Jones (Jones lover!) and keep the conversation going. Where is the denial? We all know the Padres are playing horrendous. Nobody denied that. This was a whole different topic than the teams performance. Jones, and his contract, are worse than Edmonds and his contract. If you want to discuss this, that’s fine, but don’t try and change the subject and putting words and ideas into our mouths. If you want to discuss the performance of the Padres, I don’t think anyone will argue with you that the Dodgers are playing better than us.
by osbug on May 10, 2008 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So now I am a Jones Lover ?
This is a very low point for the Padres. An embarrassing time for the franchise. I think it speaks of poor sportsmanship to focus on Andruw Jones when Edmonds has been released and replaced by Gerut. Lets focus on our own failures before we start pointing fingers at other franchises. Like I said earlier, this makes about as much sense as Bear Stearns making fun of Enron. We are not in a position to be pointing out the failures of another team. We have plenty of problems on our own roster.
by strummer on May 10, 2008 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're still missing the point
I never said anything about the Dodgers or the Padres performance. It doesn’t matter what the standings are, Jones was a worse investment than Edmonds. You decided to disgree with that. That was the whole gist of my original post, nothing more than Edmonds could have been worse, he could have been Jones. No pointing fingers at other franchises or pointing out other teams weaknesses. Your analogy doesn’t work, because nobody said Bear Stearns was better than Enron. Nobody said the Padres were better than the Dodgers. It has nothing to do with poor sportsmanship or inferiority. If you want to bring the teams into the conversation, all this shows is that the Dodgers can afford to invest $37.6mil this year and 43.2mil next year into Juan Pierre, Jason Schmidt and Andruw Jones. Not many teams could afford to make those mistakes. The Dodgers have a lot of good players, and a good farm system, and can afford to basically throw away money. In that sense, maybe they should do what the Padres did and cut Jones loose. They can afford it, and Jones is performing just as bad, if not worse than Edmonds. If you want to argue that, go right ahead. If you want to keep avoiding the subject, I can do that too.
BTW, the “Jones Lover” thing was all in jest, and unfortunately a joke that you probably wouldn’t get if you just joined GLBlast week. I am sure you will see some more “X” Lover! posts pop up around here. It was in no way meant as a personal attack, I’m not for things like that.

When My Team
just released a $6million bust in CF, the proper course of action is not to focus on the failures of the Dodgers. This is why I hate being a Padre fan. No matter how bad the team is, fans want to talk about Zito and Jones. I respect your opinion about Jones. In fact I agree with it. I realize you simply brought it up as an example. To me though, it seems like sour grapes. This is not the time or place. We have our own problems.
by strummer on May 10, 2008 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Normally I would agree with you
But in this case, I think the comparison was relevant. We all knew that Edmonds was a gamble, and unfortunately it turned out as bad as it possibly could, but the situation could have been worse. So many people point to the front office and their lack of spending money on big free agents as a major cause for this teams problems, and I disagree with that (mostly). The Dodgers and Giants happen to be a good examples of how the Padres shouldn’t operate. Again, the Dodgers can get away with overspending like that, the Padres can’t. It has nothing to do with criticizing their team so much as pointing out the differences in how the clubs operate, and how there model would not work for us.
As far as Jones goes, I have been blasting them about that since the get go. I got in an argument with DodgerBlueBalls when they signed him, pointing out that Jones was comparable to Mike Cameron, and declining fast. He laughed at me and basically told me I was crazy. The thing with Jones, people tend to forget how young he was when he started playing professional baseball. Yes, Edmonds is much older, and it would seem like Jones would have a better chance of turning things around. But if you look closer, Jones has actually played in more games than Edmonds (including minor league games), and I believe they are pretty close in total innings played. Yes, Edmonds has taken a physical beating, but Jones put a lot more stress on his body while he was young and still developing. I would guess at this point he is in a pretty steep decline. Maybe I should have given that more detailed response to your original post. I wasn’t criticizing the Dodgers so much as pointing out that the Edmonds situation could have been a lot worse.

i’m glad you got a chance to use a funny analogy, but i still disagree.
edmonds sucks. mcanulty sucks. we didn’t get better. at least edmonds has been around the league, knows the pitchers, etc. given, in my assumption, that mcanulty has peaked, i’d rather have a shitty player who can give input on pitchers to other padres hitters than one who cant. i’m not saying that knowledge is worth 4.5 million. i’m not saying it’s worth much of anything at all. but it’s worth more than having mcanulty on the team instead of edmonds.
my preferred order of release (and all 3 deserve to be gone):
1. mcanulty
2. hairston
3. edmonds
- I’d argue that the reason so many of you are so down on Edmonds, beyond the obvious reasons, is that you had your hopes up too high when he was acquired. Now that he has let you down, your anger towards his play is stronger than it should be. Nobody should have expected a lot from him – more than this. But some Padres fans (not saying anyone in particular) are pretty naive and they hear the name Jim Edmonds – and it’s actually someone they know – and they brag to their friends about how the Padres just got Edmonds and form all these lofty expectations. So they get all excited. And when he sucks, they feel super let down.

I didn’t think it was just a funny analogy. It really is a losing proposition to base decisions on money lost or to base in-game decisions on how much a guy’s getting paid.
Nevertheless, I think KT’s recent comments about how some people didn’t turn out to be clubhouse leaders like he expected them to be suggests that Edmonds wasn’t even good for that i.e. the extra “wisdom” he has.

i said it yesterday i'll say it today
we should NEVER EVER have let cameron and bradley go away. ever. offer them the money. i know camerons agent screwed him and told him to turn down our offer in hopes to get a better one, but at that point we should have given it to him. same with bradley.
i refuse to believe its a coincidence that our current slump started last Sept 23rd on the day they both got hurt. we have gone 16-23 since that game, with the first three of those wins coming against the giants, and logical men know the giants are not real baseball players.
and like i said yesterday, theres no WAY bradley lets this team play like this, he scares people way too much. he would have knocked out anyone who grounded in to a double play with the bases loaded and one out, which we’ve done 137,516 times this year (i counted).
by justdave on May 9, 2008 2:53 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Somewhat agreed
I think we would have benefited from both of them, but not at any cost. Cameron was asking for too much. This was a player that just got busted a second time for stimulant use. Who knows what we would get with him playing clean. And someone that is a slow starter anyway, and has to miss the first 25 games…maybe the Padres did feel he was worth the money, but from what I remember money wasn’t the sticking point, length was. The Padres didn’t want to give him more than two years, and he wanted more. What did he end up signing for…two years with the second year a team option. His agent blew that one.
The Padres thought they had Bradley signed, until he decided to sign with Texas. It seems to me he caught the Padres front office offguard and didn’t give them a chance to respond. If they did have a chance to change there offer, and didn’t do it, that is disappointing. I think he would have been well worth the money he ended up getting. I would take 100 games of Bradley and 62 games of anyone else for sure.
We would have been a lot better with both of them, but what can you do. They both decided to play somewhere else.

From mlb4u.com
Signed deal for 2008 season worth $7M on 1/14/08- + he receives a $1.25M signing bonus and a salary of $5M in 2008- + he will begin the 2008 season with a 25-game suspension to a violation of the MLB stimulant policy thus costing him $792,350 in pay- + the deal includes a team option for 2009 worth $10M or a $750K buyout- + he can earn $750K in performance bonuses in 2008 for reaching 475PA- + he can earn $750K in performance bonuses in 2009 for reaching 575PA- + he receives a limited NO-TRADE clause.
He got less money, and didn’t even get a guaranteed second year.
I thought Bradley was awesome, and was severely disappointed when he left. That guy was an absolute monster for us. Maybe the Bud Black throwing him to the ground thing has something to do with it.

yeah
he hit 11 hr in just over 40 games. straight beast. i always felt like if he scowled at the ball hard enough it wouldnt get bogged down in the petco air and would just keep sailing.

I think he
had that A’s fire in him. Those guys are brawlers. Speaking of which, wondering if we could get Mark Ellis from the A’s. He’d be great at 2B.

I have to agree
on the Bradley move. I just wish we had been able to retain him. The guy was a fairly solid bat, and has proven as much this year in the AL again. But I guess I agree more on the fire he brought to the squad. Peavy so far is the only other guy I can think of who is diehard competitor. Need more of these guys in the clubhouse to step up and be leaders.

Reds fan here
and fantasy baseball geek. With the Edmonds release and the overall horrible CF situation, is there any validity to the talk I heard recently about the Padres being interested in trading for Felix Pie? Dude could really benefit from getting away from Piniella’s craziness.

Well that doesn't mean the Padres
don’t want some Pie. All it said was that the Cubs GM shot down a rumor of Pie for Khalil Greene. That doesn’t mean they don’t have trade talks going with the Padres for different players.

We can't even pick good days to release personnel
Versus Cook, tonight’s starter
Jim Edmonds: .538 (7-for-13, 2B, 2 HR, 2 BB, SO)
Should have waited a day

Yeah, but he had great numbers against a bunch of others that we have already faced, specifically one of the ones in Atlanta and couldn’t hit anything agains them I was more worried about him out in the field than batting. He wasn’t playing well there. At least with Khalil, we know his defense is great when his offense isn’t always.

"So Sad To Say..."
I’ve always dug Jimmy Ed… usually whenever somebody shits the bed for the Padres I hate them but his brief appearance for us was just very saddening. I might like this move if we as a team had any chance whatsoever…

"I might like this move if we as a team had any chance whatsoever…"
I know I don’t read/know as much as some of you guys/gals on here but I don’t understand either…
I get Edmonds tragic production, I’ve made as many jokes as anyone and I get that it “is the right move” but would we really be considering gerut, hundley, chase, antonelli if we had one inkling of an option ANYWHERE else!?
It seems these guys are not really ready, and we could potentially hurt them or damage confidence levels by bringing them up too early, or even expose flaws that might not be apparent in the minors decreasing interest in potential future trades…
It just seems (in my laymans eyes) that the constant prudence of finances and “cheaper” gambles have put us in this position where we are making choices which are basically the same meat different gravy…
