Smells Like Padres in Here - Friday Edition
Lot of blame to go around for that mess yesterday. Anyone else preparing themselves to be disappointed in the "changes" that may be made today? I just don't get the feeling that it's going to be anything major. And I don't think Edmonds is getting released. I'm betting on the DL - can't recall who brought that up earlier this week, but I think that's the way they are gonna play it. Why do I think that? Don't have a good answer for that one.
Estes is happy to be back. He pitched better than I anticipated yesterday. With the way things are going...he probably blew out his elbow.
Boomer back to the Yankees? The funniest part is that the article says he's been working out.
Arizona is closer to locking up Webb. So we've got that to look forward to.
Jake takes on the Rockies and Aaron Cook tonight. Cook generally throws pretty well against us. As does the rest of baseball. Game time is 7:05pm PDT.

No word on The Sauce.
65 pitches, 2 hits, 3 walks…
What gives?

They probably are just
being careful with him. He hasn’t started in a while, so they probably want to slowly stretch him out. No reason to burn out his arm in his first start.

Drama pointed out
he’d thrown 49 pitches on Sunday. (Ledezma, not Drama)
I also read a comment from someone who went to the game, and it said Ledezma looked gassed towards the end there.

I'll be honest
If this entire team was gassed, I wouldn’t be too upset.

Yeah, that's not going so good.
Barry, our counselor, says it’s ok not to drink just because the Padres are losing. But some losses are tougher than others. You know that Jack in the Box in San Ysidro? The one right before you go over the border? Well, let’s just say, it’s a long van ride back to Serenity Springs from there. Especially when SammyG is only wearing discarded taco wrappers for clothing. I’d like to say they were “strategically placed”...but that would be a lie.
Needless to say, we both lost our TV priveleges for a couple of days. And no dessert. But we’re doing a little better now.

Sorry to hear.
But I would say that a crotchless-taco-wrapper-suit is the essence of strategy.

Apparently Bud only uses him in "save situations"
Following the logic of way too many MLB managers who refuse to realize that if you send a garbage pitcher out in a tie game, you won’t have a save situation.

Garbage pitcher?
I’m sure I follow then. Should we be using Hoffy in tie games or no?
(This is sarcasm that Trevor Hoffman may actually be a garbage pitcher these days)

I know.
And yes, that thought crossed my mind, but clearly Thatcher’s been ineffective of late, and it hasn’t been Trevor Time since April 30th.
Best available reliever should be used in tie games. I would argue that yesterday, Thatcher did not fit that profile.

How's this for hopeless optimism?
I was just realizing how close the Padres were to taking 2 of 3 from the Braves this series.
Adrian missed a 3 run, 9th inning homer off Royce Ring by a few feet (sure, this assumes Trevor could have come in and closed it out….). That’s game 1.
Game 3: that ball doesn’t go Buckner on Crabbe (or Buddy puts Iguchi in as a defensive replacement) and the Padres probably win.
The point is, when things are going well….maybe 1 of those games goes our way. When things are going really well, they both do. This season? Nothing.

For the most part
We’ve had several games that could have gone either way like that. The problem is that we are just consistently losing them. I can’t think of a bunch of them off-hand, but there was the 22-inning affair, the games you mentioned against the Braves, some of the early games in April, and others. A lot of times, it has been one or two things that has blown a game wide open.
That’s probably what makes this most painful. We’re not routinely getting blown out. We’re ussually close enough to hope (or we have a lead) and we cannot add on or protect the lead.

Thatcher is 0-4
so I can think of at least 4 times where a game could have gone either way, but, well… you can guess what happened.

I'm all for positivity
But a lot of these games that are “close” really aren’t that close. As an example, the 3 error game that led to the 1 run loss. We’re lucky not to have been completely smoked because of our incompetence.

A lot of those.
A lot of near misses on getting completely blown out, a lot of near misses on something that qualifies as game-winning. There are a few less of the former, mostly when we got laugher starts from Maddux, CY, and Germano, which happens to the best, and Germano more so.

Just a guess
But it’s probably because the promotions are scheduled during the offseason before anyone knows who’s pitching on what night….

Intro Music / KBot being KBot
Found this article on Padres.com.
I had noticed that some players didn’t have intro music this season, but I didn’t know it was THIS deep…
Greene, meanwhile, had a slightly different reason behind his choice to stride to the plate in silence.
“It was just something that after a while it was something I didn’t want to have to worry about,” Greene said. “I’m a pretty big music fan and I enjoy the subtleties of it and the timing. It can evoke different emotions in different situations, and sometimes I felt it became a little bit distracting, whether it was up-tempo (or not), but I’ve never really hit well at home anyway, so I guess it wouldn’t really matter.”
