Open Thread: 5/7, Padres vs. Braves

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 7, 2008 4:10 PM PDT

Listen. You listen to me!

This ship is sinking and I'm going down with it. You all save yourselves.  Dex has already tied himself to the mast.  I want all the women and children in life rafts!  I don't want to see any women or children under the age of 18 on this thread tonight.  Don't try to be a hero.

GO PADRES!!!!

O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done

The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:

But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

I think I was the one who sunk the ship.

Seriously. I let this girl(An A’s fan of all people) I was dating borrow my lucky Khalil Greene jersey, then we split. She still has it and the Padres have been doing crappy ever since. I need to get it back from her. I think just about everytime I wore the jersey when i watched a game, Greene hit a home run. I need it back.

gotta agree

I’d venture to guess that, given the situation of bases loaded no outs, the league average for runs scored would be pretty darn close to 2.

of course, the padres average is about 0.5, but that’s another story

Padres Transaction

- The Padres have purchased the contract of Run-Scoring Balk and designated Anyone for assignment. CEO Sandy Alderson, citing his experience in building teams on the cheap based on undervalued statistics, remarked:

“Run-Scoring Balk represents the future of Padres baseball. So many teams place emphasis on hitting well with runners in scoring position, moving runners over with productive outs, and things of such nature. As the team of the future, the Padres are targetting an attribute than can be affordable for us in arbitration years and quite frankly, is being overlooked by so many other teams.”

It was the same game

Where Kevin Brown came in in relief in the 7th, the crowd went nuts, and then he promptly gave up a 3 run homer to Michael (Sucker) Tucker to give the Braves the lead.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a stadium/ballpark go from being that loud to that quiet THAT quickly.

This is the Rockies fault somehow....

I keep thinking of that freak day losing Mike Cameron and Milton Bradley…Nothing has gone right since. How do we reverse that?

Dont forget Tony Gwynn Jr.

specifically in that trade though

They needed a reliever so much
and they said Gwynn wasn’t untouchable
but Towers didn’t push it

I blame that for everything

TG Jr. falls under the Bradley Curse

At first, i was going to call it the Holliday curse….but of course, much had gone wrong prior….it really starts with the day Bradley killed Cameron and then Bud Black tore Bradley in half.

by goose1 on May 7, 2008 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

We go and hurt Cameron and Bradley now...?

then go on an amazing streak to the world series…?

Bradley will take care of himself....

By which I mean, go on a tirade and chew his arm off and miss 60 games.

by goose1 on May 7, 2008 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

great lets go to Milwaukee

so we can break Cameron
and the season turns around!

Why does Bud keep doing this with Thatcher?

I think Thatcher has something to offer in the LOOGY/long relief/trash time department….

But this is another situation where the bases are loaded. There’s a force at every base. Don’t you want a ground ball at that point to turn a double play? Let me think….do we have anyone on the staff who is ONE OF THE MOST EXTREME GROUND BALL PITCHERS IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES? Maybe a sidearm sort of guy, scruffy-lookin? Anyone? Anyone?

Why Thatch in that situation? People are going to look bad when they are USED BADLY. Christ.

There will be a different team here

on Friday. It will be exciting just because of that.

Khalil gets 4 strikes

All balks are scored as Padre HRs.

No sliders for Khalil
