Predict the changes

The Padres are gonna make some moves any minute now. Let's do some predicting.

What moves will the Padres make by this time next week? Be bold. No good saying, "we call up a minor leaguer". That's a lame prediction. I want to see Nostrafriggindamus up in here.

Me? I have no predictions. I have no idea what's going to happen. That's why I'm throwing it on you guys. Ducksnorts has been discussing it today if you want to steal some ideas.

I predict the only change is

Edmonds is DFA’d and Gerut is brought up.

Predictions

I’m not really sure if these will even be close because it’s been really hard to read the FO so far, but:
1. Edmonds is released. Replaced with Gerut or Venable in CF. I’d like to see both called up.
2. Hundley up, Morton down. And Bard should sit for a week so we can see if Hundley can play.
3. Estes up and into the rotation after Ledezma gets drilled tomorrow. Estes will do okay his first start, then get drilled in his second. So…Ramos comes up after Estes is released.
4. They need an arm for the bullpen, but I’m not sure where its coming from. Hayhurst and Wells are the only guys on the Portland roster with remotely decent numbers in relief. So one of them. I’ll say Wells.
5. Headley isn’t coming up. They seem to want to protect him from the pressure that will come with being the organization’s #1 guy and walking into a mess.

Also – I’ll be more interested to watch every night because hopefully we’ll see some guys we haven’t seen very much – but I don’t think any of the moves will really change much of what we’re seeing.

by Winfield's Ghost on May 7, 2008 12:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think

you’re retty much spot on, but I doubt Bard would sit for a week (much as I’d like to see that). I also look forward to seeing our young guys come up. If we’re gonna lose games, we might as well give the kids a shot.

I want Hayhurst to make it up, just because the guy has such great character. Have you ever seen his “Non-Propsect Diary” on BA? It’s pretty much awesome.

Oh, and I’ll go out on a limb here and call this, much as it breaks my heart: Khalil is traded before the season is over.

by Phantom on May 7, 2008 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I know Bard is pretty much just wishful pleading on my part. And I agree with you on Khalil – something just isn’t right and he seems to be the only name that teams are realistically inquiring about.

I would love to see Hayhurst, too – that BA thing is some of the best baseball related reading out there.

by Winfield's Ghost on May 7, 2008 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree about khalil

He’s good as gone.

And

An all-star with somebody else.

by Dex on May 7, 2008 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sadly

That will be exactly what happens. It completely sucks that there are just so many people in the media around here that don’t seem to appreciate exactly what he brings to the team. He’s the best (all around) shortstop the team’s ever had and I don’t think people will understand this until he excels elsewhere.

This is gonna suck worse than losing Fins and Cammy in ‘99.

“I can’t believe San Diego gave up Greene for (insert name of guy who will not be with team in two years.)”

by Winfield's Ghost on May 7, 2008 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Greene gave up on us long before we gave up on him. He’s going to serve his time here (first six years pro) and then go to a ballpark where his fly balls are home runs. And I don’t blame him, he is too small for PETCO Power (it takes an Adam Dunn sized guy to hit 40 HR in PETCO)

by TheRevRun on May 7, 2008 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't necessarily

agree with the concept that Khalil gave up on the team. He said (truthfully or not is debatable) that he doesn’t want to play anywhere else but here. He’s developed a comfortable relationship with the media here that I don’t think he would enjoy in many other cities.

I’m not sure if it takes size to hit 40 HRs at Petco. I think it more depends on the type of hitter you are. A dead pull lefty or righty should be able to hit HRs at Petco pretty consistently, especially dead-pull lefties. The porch is pretty close, and Western Metal doesn’t require a shot to get out either. Part of our problem is that most of our guys are all-fields type hitters, or get under the ball too much for Petco. Khalil is mostly a dead-pull hitter, but it seems like he’s tried to go opposite way more this year (with little success).

by Phantom on May 7, 2008 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

These aren't necessarily predictions, but more of what I would do:

- Trade McAnulty for a player to be named later, or expose him to waivers. He’s too similar to Huber in that he’s unathletic (a frightening trend with this team) and even though he’s left-handed PETCO favors righties more anyway. I have no idea how much interest other teams might have in him, but unless he catches fire right now he won’t last much longer in a Padres uniform.
- Call up Gerut. This is a no-brainer, really. You’ve got a hot player in your minor leagues who happens to play the position you’re struggling the most with.
- Call up Edgar Gonzalez. Kouzmanoff has played every game this year at third, and he has no real backup except Crabbe. Gonzalez would change that. He’s playing fairly well in AAA too.
- Take a serious look at Headley at least. He’s hitting something like .350 in his last few games.
- Call up Hundley and send down Morton. Hundley’s a more advanced prospect and Bard needs some rest pretty badly.

I agree on Gonzalez

I never understood not using him
I think he’d be a great Bench guy
and good back up since Kooz will eventually need an extra day off

and maybe him and Adrian will act all crazy giles brothery and fire up the team

My predictions

Trade P-keg to the Mets for Brady Clark, ‘cause he’s such an awesome defensive centerfielder.

Buddy Black switches from using eenie meenie minie moe for all of his managerial decisions to one of those folded paper thingies that all of the 8th grade girls use to predict who they’ll marry.

Trade Edgar Gonzalez to the Rangers for Josh Hamilton, making sure to always refer to him as “infielder Gonzalez”. By the time the Rangers figure it out, it’ll be too late.

hahaha

Brady Clark! hhaha

Its called a cootie catcher! but i think it should be a giant wheel!

I think that sounds great… it would work for sure if Bush still owned the team!!

by Axion on May 7, 2008 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmmm

I think they would keep Edmonds on the bench… cus sometimes KT doesn’t like to admit he made a bad call

I don’t think they would call up Hundley unless they are considering getting rid of Barret because they have less moves to make with Hundley they can’t just move him up and down all season

I think Gerut is the best chance at coming up… which i don’t know why he wasn’t on the opening day roster

I seriously see Hairston going down or getting traded away but thats only if they find someone that they feel comfortable with in a clutch spot… this season aside they feel scotty is good in that position

Id love to see Headley but i doubt thats gonna happen since all they talk about is giving him more time… so he’s probably a late season call up if whoever they put in the outfield now isn’t working

I definately don’t see them trading Khalil since theyve streessed his entire career that his defense is worth his streaky hitting and they stress the home grown thing

Venebale should be up to he has lots of talent

I don’t think the changes will come any where other than the outfield… i heard that the cubs were interested in Brian Giles but that would be stupid to get rid of him when he’s hitting

And if Iguchi slumps again i say they give Antonelli a shot

Don’t be afraid of young guys! its called on the job training

I'll trade Scott Hairston

For a series win and a 5 stick pack of gum.

Anyone else?

25 pack of gum

after all he does get a big hit sometimes

and might make a good play

Not yet covered

1. Cut Tony Clark, he’s dead weight and an inflexible bench player
2. Wally Joyner, fired before year end. (sorry wally)
3. Someone loses it and runs down Steve Quis with their car (longshot)

On Khalil, we’d need to trade for another SS, which kinda ties our hand.

i'd probably do number 3

They should have a 2 year old do the play by play when Matty is doing Fox or whatever

because seriously the 2 year old would be more knowledgeable and accurate than that fool

You can't plan it, that's premeditated.

It has to be in a fit of rage so you can declare temporary insanity, you know, because the team is sucking, yeah, that’s the ticket…

WRONG

Steve Quis rules guys! He is spot on. If you’re handing out pink slips start with Mark Grant… .what does he bring anyway?

by TheRevRun on May 7, 2008 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Grant

brings comic relief and recomendations for great food

Quis brings bad facts, an annoying voice, wrong opinions and boredom….although i have to admit listening to his mistakes are pretty funny

if your mute button or tv has captions put it on when he is on because sometimes its easy to block him out and its just plain funny in print

Quis blew CY's Noeys.

Grant holds records for frozen yogurt consumption, something that is going to become an even more important stat this year.

by Dalton on May 7, 2008 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals

He’s on the trading block..maybe the Pads want him.

Or, they can get Ken Griffey Jr since he’d fit in with the aging, less productive outfield

by thenerdhater on May 7, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Only problem...

Griffey Jr. wants to play for a winner.

Moar bullpen!

I gotta get behind GY’s call to demote Thatcher til he gets a clue and dump Rusch.

What happened to the philosophy of “we don’t care if a guy is left handed, we want guys who can get hitters out” from a couple years ago?

I’ll tell you what happened… we got some lefties, and it’s gone to their heads!

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.

by Axion on May 7, 2008 1:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm

1) I think Gerut gets put in center and Edmonds gets the boot.
2) Khalil gets traded and Crabbe takes over at short. Or at least keep Greene for backup.
3) Call up Myrow and drop him in second. Would be a bit of stretch, but the boy can hit.
4) Put LeBlanc in the bullpen.
5) Make a trade for Bradley. Maybe Hairston/P-mac or player to be named.
6) Platoon Headley at 3rd with Kouz, (This was his original position)
7) Dump Ledezma
8) Tell Theo Epstein he can have Headley (For Dustin Pedoria) Dustin is a California boy anyways. he’d be closer to family and he has a bright future ahead of him.
9) Get serious about building a farm system.
10) Give Bud Black another year to prove he can manage or toss him. i think catchers make better managers than ex-pitchers anyways. But KT has a pitcher bias.

Do you use the browser button

to “share on SB nation” it makes it so easy. That’s why I’ve gotten so lazy about actually writing posts because I’m addicted to just making fanshots.

Check this out

Fanshot page

At the top of the page, see how it tells you to drag that button to your bookmark bar?

Do that. Then when you find an interesting article. Just click that button and it’ll automatically make a link fanshot.

If you want to make a quote fanshot, highlight a portion of the article and then click the browser button.

For pictures, just get the picture so it’s the only thing on the page and hit the button.

On a youtube page just click the button and it’ll take care of the rest.

When in doubt hit the button.
